One Year Ago
Nick Fury knew where all of his troublemakers were almost all of the time. This way he knew when a headache was coming. There was one individual, not necessarily one of the troublemakers, he always kept tabs on was one Steve Rogers, aka Captain America.

Rogers was currently enjoying a cup of coffee and scrambled eggs at Rosie's Diner. Nick walked into the diner carrying a manila envelope. He slid into the booth and smiled at the waitress that appeared at the table. "Cup o' yer best, honey," he said favoring her with one of his best smiles.

"Coming right up," she said and went to get the coffee.

He looked at Steve and slid the envelope across the table.. "Got somethin' ya might be interested in."

"Fury," Steve said putting down his cup of coffee and reaching for the envelope. He had a couple of guesses about what it could be about. But whatever it was it meant at least a couple of tough days ahead of him.

He then opened the envelope to see what was inside.

"Seems like someone has a beef for some politicians an' has been takin' 'em out left an' right," Nick said.

He paused when the waitress brought his coffee. "Thanks, honey."

When she left he continued. "This individual is responsible for the kills. Take a look an' see if he reminds ya of anyone."

"Is there any connection between the politicians," Steve asks as he reads through file while he talks.

From what he had read so far this guy was good that was responsible for the killings and there seemed to be something familiar about some of the methods employed.

When he got to the picture Nick was talking about his eyes went wide. It had taken him a moment to place who it was, he looked a little older and harder but there was no doubt in his mind who it was. Even still he had trouble believing it.

Not very loudly and in an almost automated response to what he was seeing, Steve said his name, "Bucky."

"Yeah," Nick said. "We dunno who he's workin' for, but he's been behind these killins." Nick took a sip of his coffee. "We got a tail on him, but he keeps eludin' us. You wanna be the one t' bring him in?"

Steve nodded. "Yes I want to be the one to bring him in," He said. If this really was Bucky he didn't know how he could still be alive and wanted to find out and if it wasn't there was still questions he wanted answered.

Washington, DC, Three Days Later

Winter Soldier waits in plain clothes in the back of the auditorium as Senator Mark Feinberg speaks of his plans to "take America back for Americans" and other ideological clap trap. An hour into the speech, he winds his way through the crowd, heading backstage to the Senator's dressing room and showing his Press Pass to the guards.

He's pretending to a reporter from some rag called the Daily Bugle who has a quick interview with the Senator before he leaves town.

Once inside the Senator's dressing room, he pops open an air conditioning vent and grabs his gear, dressing quickly, then assembling his gun. He straps his knife to his belt and listens to the thunderous applause for the Senator grow to a crescendo and remain as he leaves the stage.

He hides behind a corner in the small dressing room, intending to catch them all by surprise as they enter. He'll kill the Senator first, then deal with his guards and run for it.

This would be too easy.

Following the latest information from Fury Captain America had gone to talk to the senator earlier as being a possible target for assassination.

He had then insisted rather strongly that he allowed to join his security for the event at least to ensure his safety and also to try and capture Bucky.

As such he entered the senator's dressing room first shield held out in front of him just in case.

Winter Soldier executes his place, firing three shots at the first man to walk in the door. When the shots bounce off the red, white and blue shield, the Soldier realizes that a complication has arisen in the plan.

And now he's trapped in the enclosed space with...whoever this guy is.

He curses in Russian and rushes at Captain America, leading with his bionic arm. He hopes to catch him off-guard and get out of there before they move to capture him.

Blocking the bullets came pretty easily to him but this was going to be a bit hard.

Captain America moves his shield to throw off the incoming blow.

"Bucky," He says, "What are you doing?"

Natasha was in disguise and shadowing Cap, watching his back as she had been instructed to do. When the shots echoed down the hall, she drew a gun and charged ahead.

Captain America might as well be talking to a brick wall for all the reaction he gets out of the Winter Soldier.

"Don't know this Bucky clown, but I'll make it so you two see each other in hell." Winter Soldier says, attempting to push past him and out into the open backstage area, where there was more room to maneuver.

The first days are the most difficult.

Winter Soldier makes two escape attempts during his first week of captivity. Two agents die in the first attempt before he is subdued. Three more die after the second attempt, and he nearly makes it to Fury before he's stopped, yet again, by Captain America and Black Widow.

The counseling sessions with Doc Samson begin the following week while Bucky is heavily restrained. He refuses to talk at all for the first couple of sessions, before he offers Samson insult upon insult.

When Natalia or Steve come to visit him, he has little to say.

Four months in, there's a breakthrough: he remembers the day that he and Steve fell into the water and some of his time with the Russians. He remembers several of their missions behind enemy lines in Germany, and his work with the Invaders.

He remembers Namor, the Torch and Toro,too.

He really doesn't speak much after that.

Nearly a year later, he's allowed to remain unrestrained during counseling when he talks to Samson. He gives Steve and Natalia full and detailed accounts of his missions as the Winter Soldier and he expresses remorse at the lives he's taken in Russia's name.

Today, he contacts the two of them, requesting a favor.

Seeing James was always a hard thing for Natasha to deal with. Just seeing him tore at her heart and after each visit coping took a few bottles of vodka. A year of seeing him and having her heart ache at the sight of him. A year of drowning herself with vodka afterward.

She was happy SHIELD was making progress undoing the brainwashing, but she wandered if he would ever be free of it.

When the message came that he wanted to see her, she couldn't say no.

She arrived in full uniform and fully armed. The Widow didn't trust lightly.

James looks up as he realizes that someone is there, on the other side of the glass at his cell. When he sees Natalia, he has to hold back a a smile. It wouldn't do to make her think he was in good shape, to fall back into old patterns.

No matter how much he wanted to.

"I'm glad you showed up first, Natalia. You'll be able to help me convince Steve, and then Fury of what needs to be done now." James says.

"He needs to find the darkest hole he's got and lock me in there, then throw away the key. There were rumors in Russia that the Americans built a prison to hold the super-types during the Registration Act.

That place would be the best idea to make me disappear." he says.

Natasha put a hand up to the glass. "No. I won't do it. You don't deserve to be locked away," she told him. Her voice was steady, but her stomach twisted into a knot and her heart skipped a beat.

"Natalia, you know the things I've done. Worst of all, /I/ know. The justice system would never let a man who's done the things I've done walk free. Hell, I keep expecting Fury to walk in here any minute and give me the old-fashioned .45 caliber injection to the back of the head." James says.

"Whether I did it of my own will or because I was brainwashed, people still died, Natalia. Lots of people. There's no way I can live with that." he says, looking at her sadly.

"You have to let me go, beautiful." he says, putting his hand to hers on the other side of the glass.

"I will not. I love you too much to just let you go."

She wanted the glass to not be there. She wanted to feel his hand touching hers.

"You are no more guilty than I am, James," she said. "We were both weapons and used as such. It does not make us any less guilty, but it does not condemn us to life in a prison cell. So many died at each of our hands, but it is the nature of the business. It's not pretty, it's dark and ugly, but that's just the way it is."

Natasha had been watching the sparring match from an observation room. Fury had been in there for awhile, but he left to go see to S.H.I.E.L.D. business. She watched both men and their movements and was quite impressed.

They finished and Natasha went to find a cup of coffee. It had been a long day and it wasn't over yet.
