She laughs. "Okay, I walked right into that one."
She leads him down to the garage, then waits for him to open the door. It's rumored that he's got a triple-encrypted security system on the door with fingerprint recognition software to keep anyone from pranking him by messing with The Girls, but Veronica has yet to see this. Or perhaps they just know that Bobby will reign down fire and destruction on anyone who dares mess with his cars. "What made you take such an interest in cars to begin with? If I can ask." Veronica says, making small talk.
"You did," he said and then walked with her down the garage.
Of course there was uber security on the garage. He came by his paranoia honestly, he inherited it. With a wave of his hand over the key pad, the door unlocked with a click. Being a technopath had its advantages. "My dad and my two grandfathers love cars. I got it from them. I've been helping them with cars since I was in diapers."
"It's nice that you have such a good relationship with your extended family. Except for Kal, Iason, and Daddy, none of the Eternals from Polaria even acknowledge I exist.
And Grandpa Zeus has thousands of grandchildren so...yeah." she says, following him into the garage. "Your cars are cool. You've got good taste, but I bet you hear that all the time." Veronica smiles.
"But you do get to see the Olympia Eternals, right?" he asked as he ran a hand lightly over Gwen's hood. "Yeah, I can't imagine having a family like your Greek side. It's...a lot."
"Sometimes," he admitted. "Though most girls don't appreciate cars like guys do."
"I do." she nods. "Sersi is really nice to me, as are many of the others. But my family gives new meaning to the whole 'My Big Fat Greek Life'." Veronica smiles.
"I admit I've always been curious about what you do down here for so many hours a day. One can only fix a car so much, right?" he asks.
"Good that you have a few that are close and you can count on," he said.
"Well yes, but I usually buy shells and rebuild them from the ground up. When you start with just the shell, there's a lot to do."
"You build them completely from the inside? I'm impressed. What's the most difficult car you've ever put together?" she asks.
Bobby smiled and the slightest hint of pink touched his cheeks. "Yeah, I do. The first one I did on my own was the hardest. Refused help from everyone just to see if I could do it."
"And you've been doing it better and better every since." Veronica says.
"You're a man of many talents, Bobby. Use them wisely and only for good." Veronica teases. "Which of your girls is your favorite?" she asks.
If he didn't know her better, he would swear she was hitting on him. He usually heard lines like that with the girls who were interested in dating him.
"Oh I'm totally going to use them for evil," he said and waggled his eyebrows. "I've been working on an evil laugh." And to prove it, he demonstrated his evil laugh. "Sally. She was my first." He motioned to a 69 Mustang sitting in the corner.
Veronica likes Bobby, but she also knows how well how he is.
"I don't think you could be evil if you tried, Bobby, even if the laugh is good." Veronica says. Upon seeing Sally, Veronica takes a look at the Mustang, then lays a hand on it. Her eyes close and she watches in her mind, all of the time, care and energy Bobby has placed into this car. She watches the installation of each part, the frustration when things don't go so well, and the elation the first day it started with no issues. Her eyes open and she smiles, looking at the car with new appreciation. "Yes. I want to learn how to fix cars." she says.
Bobby liked her, but he figured he would never give her the time of day. Not to mention the awkwardness that was bound to arise if things went bad. They always did. Girls didn't like sharing him with his other girls.
"You never know. Suze says I'm one lab accident away from becoming a super villain," he said with a grin. "Tell you what, I've had my eye on a new shell. I'll be getting it this weekend. When I do, I'll teach you how to build a car from the ground up."
"And then you'd use that laugh every chance you get." Veronica chuckles, shaking her head. "We'd have to stop you for that alone. But don't worry; I'll explain what happened to the girls and take care of them for you." she smiles.
"You get that shell and it's a date. I'll start reading up on it in the meantime. I couldn't tell a carburetor from an alternator if my life depended on it, and I don't want you thinking you have to teach a class just to get me up to speed." she says, looking around the room. Veronica sees another car in the opposite corner. "Which one is she?" Veronica asks.
"Of course I would," he said. "What's the fun of being a super villain if you can't do the evil laugh every chance you get?"
"That is Marla. She's a '67 Impala." Also a cute blond he dated. All his cars were named after old girlfriends. "Want to go for a ride?"
"Thought you'd never ask." Veronica says, heading to the passenger seat.
"Don't hold back on speed on my account. I've always wanted to know how fast one of these things can go." he says, patting Marla's hood. She'll take a look at this one later.
Oh did he love forward girls so. Bad idea, he reminded himself as he climbed into the driver's seat. Veronica was "I won't, but the speed won't come until we're out of the city."
"Sounds good to me." she smirks. She doesn't fear many things that should rightly be able to kill a normal person, as she is not a normal person.
"Do you prefer the classic types of vehicles or have you every thought about trying to build your own?"
"I like the classics. My Mom's the one who is into the high tech gadgets and cars. Dad's the classic guy and that's where I get it from."
He opened the garage door and started the car. The engine roared to life and then settled into a steady purr.
Veronica loves the scent of the car, the smell of the leather, and buckles in, relaxing as the engine starts up.
"So, how many other girls have you take for a ride in Marla?" she asks.
Bobby shrugged. "One? Two maybe? Most of the time I stay in the city and take the subway. Easier than driving."
"Is that the truth? I like the subway, though it's really funny when I think about my dad using it to knockout a bad guy once." she chuckles.
"What's your favorite thing to do in the city, Bobby?" she asks. |
