Acts of Avenging, pt. 2 - Mother Russia
The teleportation is far easier this time. Russia is a very, very big place, and there's no magical barriers or resistance.

In fact, there's not a lot of anything. Looking around the area where they come in, remote, in order to avoid notice, it would look like the village that was once here was struck with a bomb, save nothing is burnt. A wave of destruction radiates out from a central point, and everything from there is demolished. The foundations of houses sit bare, with wreckage strewn away from them. The signs of at least two mass graves aren't that well hidden not far away from the village. A few hastily put together crosses of sticks line the sites now, but this village is lifeless. A wooden sign, far enough on the outskirts to have survived whatever hit this place can still be read, at least by those who speak Russian.
Anzhero-Sudzhensk, population: 86,480

With all the flat land, in the distance on direction, the signs of cobbled together stick and cloth hovels can be seen, a few figures moving about, never staying out in the open too long. Much more distantly the opposite direction, the faint radiance of lights of what has to be a massive city can be somewhat discerned, but the place must be massive to be at all evident at this distance.

Sarah rises a bit off the ground for a slightly better view. "Gods. This is horrible."

"If there's beer, I better get a pint or two," Quinn said. Seeing enough, he touched back down on the ground.

"We need to get you some friends, big guy." She looks across Russia. Roxy heard about starving people in Russia, but the TV made the ones back home always seem...normal-ish. Just people in bad times, in a bad way, getting kicked around by giant jerks with bigger guns. Oh yeah, and you didn't fuck with any of them when they were drunk without making sure the numbers were even. This is just brutal in a way she can't even begin to wrap her head around.

"Try the vodka. It's prob'ly cheaper."

Strangely, within Rocky, the Rider finds very little overwhelming guilt or sin - the real feeling is one of crushing tragedy, with its roots firmly placed both in the city in the distance, and in many of the people in the mass graves and many thousands of other people and places tracing back to a war long ago.

"I think that finding him some friends is part of what we're here for. We need to figure out who... and for that, we need some answers. We know at least the mutants among us should be relatively welcome, from what we learned in Australia."

Sarah glances around the landscape. "Then be very careful. What do people think... start in the village over there, or start in the city... or something else?"

Bucky shakes his head. Back in the war, one of his best friends was a mutant. He's never understood the prejudice between mutants and baselines. People are just people.

He nods towards the village. "In the village, we can get some information, and possibly a guide. And, hopefully, a place for Ben to rest while we're in the city."

"We should go into the village. Even if it's just to get a newspaper or two." And beer. He could really use a beer.

The village isn't far away. Most of the people scatter and rush for shelter when they see the Exiles. A few eyes peek out from shadowy areas. The only person who doesn't duck is a figure near the center of the village, who seems to be telekinestically reassembling a damaged house. As the group approaches, however stealthy they may be being, he turns. "Who's there?"

"Just a few weary travelers looking for a place to rest, grab a pint or two and get some information," Quinn said carefully.

He catches the accent first, not looking back as he first responds. "More refugees from the Nazis." he replies with a sigh. "Hope you're not expecting things too much easier, but long as you keep your heads down, no one will try and hunt you down here. These people don't have much, you'll have to settle for water or milk. But as long as most of you are able to work for it, two meals a day and a place to sleep is doable."
He finishes his repairs and turns around to regard the newcomers, and his eyes open wide. "Clarice!? Oh god, Clarice. You're alive!"

The moment she'd seen him- and recognized hmi- Blink froze. It was this universe's Calvin Ranking. It had to be.

But then he recognized her.

"...Cal?"

He's to her side in a flash, literally, his form blurring with super speed before he grabs her, twirling her about in a hug. Notably, his costume seems to have become full body, and he's careful not to touch her skin to skin.
"Clarice! It is you! When you left for New York, then didn't hear from you, we were all sure you were dead."

The Power Prism blinked rapidly in its setting in Joe's glove. It had been acting up every since they'd met the Timebroker. And now, in a new world, it was still off.

"This isn't good," he muttered to himself as he watched Blink and whoever this other guy was.

"...New York? But-" Oh no. Oh no, oh no. It couldn't be, this was too cruel. "You're from this world." She tried to step away. "I'm not- I'm not from- I'm not the Clarice you knew."

The smile fades from his face, going from joyous to utterly crushed. "Oh... oh I'm so sorry. I thought... hoped..." he takes a deep breath, turning away so as not to need to look at her directly. "Dimensional travelers?"

"That's quite the mission, but you're a little late. The wars are over. Now things have settled into a long cold war period that doesn't look in any hurry to end. But if you really are who you say you are, then good luck either way. What brings you to Russia?"

He glances to Clarice. In his world, Mimic was a criminal briefly before he was killed in the Sentinel Revolt. But Bucky also knows that mutants never got a fair shake in his world, and he's willing to trust this guy if Blink is.

His look asks, wordlessly, if they can trust him.

Blink remembered her first mission. All her teammates assumed that because Professor Xavier was good on their world that he was the one they needed to free. And for that mistake thousands of people died.

That was why Cal put her in charge. She wasn't affected the way the others were. Her universe was different enough that she didn't have to worry about projecting her feelings for the people she knew onto their alternates. She could only imagine how hard it was for her friends. Now she knew.

This was Calvin Rankin, a Calvin that her alternate here had known.

"There should be a team of heroes on your world, the Avengers." Clarice began.

If this backfired then she'd just have to live with it.

"Team of heroes? Are you sure you're not from here? You sound a lot like my Clarice." Yes, he says 'my' in such a fashion as to suggest they were more than friends here. "Except now its Avengers instead of the legendary Guardian Angel of New York. There hasn't been a team of heroes since the Fantastic Four died. And that failure pretty much convinced everyone else of what happens to heroes."

"In most of the worlds we're from, there's a number of teams. The Avengers, Defenders, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Excalibur to name a few are the ones who keep people like Doom, Magneto, Apocalypse, Kang and the other big bads from taking over," Quinn explained. "It's no wonder this place turned out the way it did if none of those teams formed. We're here to bring at least one of them together." He hoped he wasn't saying too much about their mission.
