Generation Hexed
Three years ago, Xarus Tepes, son and slayer of Dracula, united the warring vampire sects under a new banner. They followed his new vision for the future, a future of vampires empowered in a fashion the world had never seen. A melding of vampire and mutant blood, ushered in through fire and blood. In another world, he might have only sent forth one suicide bomber, in San Fransisco, but in this one, he sent many. Overnight, across the United States, the ranks of the vampire nation swelled, bringing mutants and other superhumans into the fold. Some resisted their new natures, many did not. With the aid of the X-Men, Dracula eventually was restored and then resumed control of the vampire nations and restored order, but the swell in the ranks represented a fundamental shift in power amongst the supernatural community. Almost overnight, other camps began responding. Otherworld tested its pact with the British Isles, soliciting humans to serve as scions of fey magic. Tribes of lycanthropes went on offensive strikes into isolated communities to spread their own condition. Things that lurked in dark places offered more power in exchange for fewer souls.

Now, the world has a new face. Fields of wild magic dotted across the globe render technology moot within their territory, and magic is nearly commonplace. Sentinels and Hulkbusters were repurposed and reshaped into magic-powered golems and armors of hideous might. The world has become the stuff of the Brothers' tales, before Disney and modern media got hold of them. Cities run the gamut from overgrown by restored wilderness, to reshaped into gleaming spires of otherworldly beauty, to ruins.

Where and when the Exiles arrive, it is night by all appearances, but there are no stars, and what appears to be the moon high above is featureless and pristine. By all appearances, they are in what was once a suburban neighborhood, but the homes now are either falling apart, or fortified and bearing runes and hex marks across their structures. Swathes of thornbushes have replaced flower-beds and lawns, and spikes of iron ring some of the properties, seemingly the remains of automobiles, torn apart by bare hands and claws.

Why does it have to be vampires? Sarah can't help but think to herself again. Images of Vampire Queen Storm disintegrating under the lightning blast and Dazzler's light flash through her head at mention of infected X-Men.

Suppressing the desire to shudder or retreat from the conversation, she steps up instead.
"Ok, so what is being done? Who are the main opposing factions? We need somewhere to start as an approach to this. Or at least what locals are doing."

Walker nods to Sarah. The girl asks the right questions. Maybe she really is Steve's kid, somewhere, anyway. "We'll get to that. Like I said, the vampires were just the first part. When the vampire nation, the vampire nation now, made that kind of surge in population... it wasn't long before it was practically an arms race.

Were-things, wolves just got the best movies, came 'out of the forest' is what the media called it. Idiots. Anyone who wanted to become one could... until the buzz died down and they weren't getting the numbers they thought they needed to resist the suckerheads anymore. So.. people started going missing, then coming back. None of that only on the night of the full moon garbage either. They can change whenever they damn well please; full moon just means they don't get a choice, and unless they're experienced enough, their mind changes along with their bodies that night.

Of course, all the high and mighty sub-lords of Dracula and the older weres forgot to take into account they'd all been what they were for decades, if not centuries. The people they were changing were still too human. They didn't care about some great nation of their new 'kind'. They were just going to keep being humans... selfish, stupid, greedy, violent humans." He snorts. "Infighting in just about every state for a few months, until the geniuses in Washington got into a joint project with the Brits." He's now becoming less wearied by the story and visibly angry and disgusted.

"They rolled out a new Sentinel initiative... they called them the magic-hunters."

"And at that point, the arms race was pretty much on. As if it weren't bad enough that we had sucker-heads and weres everywhere, we started getting overflow from the magical explosion going on in England. Ober-whateverhisnameis started taking liberties with the pact Avalon had with the government. Appointing champions and whatnot all over the place. It didn't take more than a couple weeks before people had magic wands and whatever as easily as they might have gotten a handgun before. The expansion slowed down after a couple months, but at that point real humans were pretty much a minority in the world.

You asked about the main factions. Well, here in America, there's no doubt that Dracula's at the top of the food chain, with most of the vampires loyal to him. There's little pockets of rogue sects, but they're like street gangs, not the mob. The weres have stronger holds on Canada and Mexico, and demons and fairies show up wherever the hell they feel like it, but with no real organization. The vampire seat of power here is pretty much Texas, all of it. Dallas and Houston are completely covered in darkland energy, like this place.

The X-Men have a pretty good hold on San Francisco and their own little island nation, and the last we knew New York was still Avengers territory, but nobody's heard from Steve or Parker in weeks. All the magic flying around makes technology go fidgety, so phones and the internet are mostly long gone."

Sentinels too. Yeah, this is starting to sound like one of the worst places ever. And more like home at the same time. Not a point in its favor.

"Alright, so there's faction-based warfare, and some of those factions are none too stable. X-Men and Avengers... that's something. Anyone or anything that might stand as giving a chance to slow down the fighting?"

"Peace talks? I'm a monster killer, not a monster councilor," Macendale grumbles. He sits down nearby. "I'm not seeing a need for my particular skillset here."

"I suspect trying to kill all the monsters on this one might prove impossible, or, more likely, suicidal. But if we did get some kind of... conference... together, we'd need to stand watch, at minimum. I doubt people would just leave it alone. And that's if we could even figure out why they'd want to talk."

Dory's been silent, mulling things over in his head as Walker and the others talk. He turns to the native of the universe. "What have the aliens been up to? Have they just decided to leave Earth alone as a toxic mess, or have they sent any probes?"

"Some of the aliens got the hell out of Dodge when they could. Not long after that, Dracula's castle on the moon shut down any space travel. Nobody's come looking for us in any force strong enough for us to notice. There were rumors that Xavier's space-girlfriend wanted to help, but nothing ever came of it." Walker's posture has tightened a bit. He's still not entirely sure of this band of misfits, especially since their talks of peace are particularly... well-timed. He wishes he had a mind-reader on hand.

"Sarah, was it? Let me ask two things. First, what's your dad's favorite movie?

Second.. and this goes to all of you. If someone gave you a box and told you never to open it, what would you do?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]rogue_star
2013-01-06 05:57 pm UTC (link)
"For clarification, I can only speak regarding my dad, who may be a little different from this world's Captain America, but he had a lot of nostalgia value for the movie Sergeant York and for Blood and Sand, the last two movies he saw before being called to duty. The latter was his last date before the war. He loved Star Wars, but doesn't like Indiana Jones. His favorite song is 'I'll be Home for Christmas.' His favorite food is almost cliche, but its apple pie, but only if it doesn't have too much cinnamon.

Second, it would depend on who asked. But if I trusted them enough to say I wouldn't open it, I wouldn't. That's not enough information to go on.

Third, if we were able to put some kind of discussion together, who would be the biggest parties opposed to the idea?"

"Depends on the person, the tone of voice, and whether or not they use any prearranged code indicating that they are being forced to say what they're saying," Dory answers, eyes dark. Sometimes, he knows that you really don't want to open that thrice-damned box.

He's been watching Walker, and he gets the feeling that the man isn't exactly thrilled about the idea of peace talks. He can't really blame him -- this world sounds like a mess, and Walker's clearly been through the meat-grinder. He's pretty sure that the answer to Sarah's question is going to be "the humans", at least from Walker's perspective.

There's something like a smile that tugs at one side of Walker's lips at Sarah's discussion of Steve's taste in movies, and the other side joins it at Quinn's response.

"Alright, you I like, even if it's still a sin to serve beer warm." He points a finger at Quinn, before turning back to Sarah. He wheels his chair closer to her, bringing his voice down to a mere whisper. The house is protected, but he can't be too careful.

"There's a peace summit already set to happen. In secret, in San Fran. The X-Men are spearheading it. One of theirs and Jack Russell are bringing the were-whatever leaders to the table, and word is that Janus Tepes has got his old man to listen to reason and he's coming too. No idea who the rest of the guest list is. The weres were all human 'recently' by magic standards, they're just worried about demons and losing what's left of society, but--"

Something stalls in his throat before the next line. "The more sane sucker-heads have done the math. At the rate things are going...."

He tightens his jaw, then brings his head back up to look at the entire group. "At the rate things are going, the vampires will starve themselves out in twenty, forty years tops. There just... aren't enough humans to go around anymore." He pinches the bridge of his nose.

"I shouldn't even be telling you kids this... it's as tight a secret as still exists in this hell-blasted world, but... but.."

But he wants to believe there's still hope.

Sarah nods, hearing this, she jumps right into business.

"Dory, you and Gwenny are headed for San Francisco. I need you to introduce our cause to the X-Men however you need to do it. Call if you need help, but we have too many enemies on this one to all focus on one thing.

Jason, I know you're not going to like this, but you're also the only one with a chance of success, and it'll pay off against your least favorite folks in the long run. I need you to infiltrate the demons. Find out things like numbers and plans that they intend to throw against San Francisco, and any weak links.

Casey, Quinn - research time with a lot of luck needed. You're going to find out if anything remains of the Montesi formula or the Book of the Vishanti in this world. We need something to hold over the rebel vampires' heads. No intent to use it - but a lot of the old ones won't risk it."

She frowns. "I have the most experience with them and their protocols. I'm going to give the sentinels cause to focus on the wrong coast. Walker, we'll need supplies, because we're going to make this happen. Do you happen to have any C4?"

"Not everyone on the team, but I know a few," Dory admits, trying to look normal and unassuming. He'd revealed more than he'd meant to with that answer to Walker's question about boxes. He nods in acknowledgment to Sarah. "I can still do diplomatics even if that knowledge doesn't carry over. We flying ourselves to San Francisco, or is there transportation on hand?"

Hopefully Sarah knows what she's doing with those Sentinels. The rest of them aren't going to be much help to her -- or to each other, if Jason gets into it with demons or something goes for Casey and Quinn.
