Sweetheart Dance - Friday, February 10th (Open to all)

With the start of a new year, things tended to be a little hectic. January tended to be quiet events-wise, to give people time to get everything under control and get themselves sorted to deal properly with the second semester. But when February rolled around, that all changed. That all-important holiday, St Valentine's Day, was just around the corner, and the Events Committee was sure to let everyone know about it.

This year the dance fell a few days before Valentine's itself. Great big heart-shaped posters appeared all over the school, inviting everyone to don their cutest outfits and join in a celebration of fun and romance on the evening of Friday, February 10th in the ballroom.

On the night in question, the ballroom was awash in shades of pink and red. Candles and spotlights had been charmed to take on the colors, and the ceiling was covered in heart-shaped balloons, some of which were also tied to chairs and tables around the outside of a spacious dance floor. The walls were decked with streamers (again in pink and red), and in the corner a DJ was set to fill the room with every 80s ballad ever recorded, a bubble-blowing machine at her side to cover the dancers.

  Bernadine didn't quite know what to expect when Anastas asked her to the sweetheart dance. It was innocent enough: "to convince everyone we are friends." She found Abby's prom pants and after arguing with Cinna for a half an hour about whether or not to show off any cleavage settled on a borrowed gold top from one of her suitemates.
  
  She also had to set up Luka's surprise for Addy before she left (which thankfully came at a delightfully ridiculous price and she intended to spend the whole lot down at Apple's Sweets at the very next chance she got). So she turned up a little late to Anastas' room which was there agreed upon meetup.

    "I thought you decided not to come," he said as he opened the door to let her in. The room was fastidiously clean, something Stas insisted upon and his new roommate seemed (quite thankfully) to agree. He thumbed toward the terrarium set up on top of his dresser. "This is Lorelai. She would come out to meet you, but she has not been feeling good."

      Bernadine marveled at the snake curled up under the heat lamp. She tried not to giggle as Stas slipped on a ridiculous red velvet smoking jacket. It was harder than that not to blush when he passed her a simple rose corsage.

        "It is what friends do, yes?" He smiled at her, unsure exactly what he was doing tonight. Mostly trying to avoid slipping into old habits, though it was very tempting to slide an old flask of scotch into his jacket.

          She took the corsage and smelled it, still fresh, probably magicked to keep its fragrance and bright peachy color. "Doesn't really go with the top though." She smiled just the same and slipped it over her wrist.

              She shook her head, covering the corsage with her other hand as if to protect. "It's perfect. If anything I should change my shirt." She was touched and entirely out of her depth. She couldn't tell if this was a romantic gesture or if it was just as he said, something to further cement their peculiar friendship.

                "You look lovely. Do not change a thing," he argued. It didn't take Stas long to realize that Bernadine wasn't very much like Abernathy, only when she had to pretend to be. That was reason enough to be her friend, but as January blurred by with his English steadily improving and school suddenly becoming very real, he found that he wanted her to be his friend. She was funny and odd and comforting to be around.
                
                It was with a tiny pang of guilt that he took her hand and walked her from his dorm to the dance. He hadn't told her about his girlfriend yet; to be fair he hadn't told anyone. Still, it smacked just a little bit like being false that he was taking sweet Bernadine to a dance and doing his best not to think of Diana in the process.
                
                A few heads turned at Stas in the red velvet jacket and 'Abernathy' in the sequined gold top. They made quite a pair with their wardrobe alone. Add to it that no one had seen Abernathy turn up to one of these things with such an attractive, male date and people were talking.
                
                This was familiar territory for Stas, though he hadn't expected to gain any sort of reputation so early. "I did not think I would get so much attention."

                  Bernadine rested her hand on his chest and in classic Abby style pushed him back a step. "They're not talking about you, sugar." She laughed then, loud and cheerful. She had to channel every ounce of her ruse to pull off the confident and carefree attitude. "Let's give 'em something to really talk about."
                  
                  With that Anastas found himself dragged onto the dance floor, Bernadine doing her best to imitate Abby's classic dance moves.
