Confrontation of a sort.
Christmas was usually Marissa's favorite holiday.  She and her mother had always done something fun and special for it but now Vicki was dead and worse than that (in Marissa's mind) was that she was stuck in a huge house with a father who was probably still running daily dna tests to make sure she was in fact his.  Marissa still wasn't sure how the man felt about her and though she didn't want to admit it, that made her sad.  She always wanted a father.  Now that she had one, she wasn't sure he wanted her.

But questions aside, she did still have to get him a Christmas present.  She wasn't going to let being half-orphaned entirely wreck things for her.  Since she couldn't figure out what to get him, she decided to ask and marched straight to where he spent a lot of time, per Lucy.  His office in the manor.

"Are you busy?"

Luckily for Marissa, Bruce had just finished his paperwork. He sat straight up in his chair and turned it to see her. Ace was off somewhere--probably trying to rip open any Christmas present he could find. No, Bruce did not wrap the annual Christmas bone Ace usually got. He wrapped the present that he had designed for Marissa and hid it away as only Bruce Wayne could.

"No, I'm not."

She hadn't expected him to be available so she was surprised, briefly. It also surprised her how being in his presence could make her feel like she was about five years old.

"I, um, I thought maybe I should find out what you might like for Christmas."

That was surprising. So he was going to essentially be buying himself a Christmas present? That was where all her money came from, after all. Regardless, she actually put thought into the idea of giving him a present. It was a pleasant surprise.

"It doesn't matter," he replied. "Keep working hard in your training. Don't put yourself in danger."

Marissa actually had her own money, albeit squirreled away in an account she didn't really touch. Vicki's life insurance money. Marissa had been the sole heir.

"Danger, and I'm quoting you on this, comes with my cape and considering there's a serial killer who is actually gunning for Marissa Wayne..." she shook her head. "You may not be cool with the whole father-daughter thing, but I really wanted a dad as a kid. Especially at Christmas."

Was she tearing up? Oh goddamnit...

"So...what would you like?"

Bruce stood up at that and narrowed his gaze.

"There is a difference when you put a clean target on your forehead. You work in the shadows so you can avoid this situation."

He watched her start to tear up. It wasn't what he was trying to accomplish. Marissa's emotions were too easily hurt, and it was a serious problem when put into the mix with Bruce's personality.

But perhaps this was a moment that was meant to be dealt with by a softer side of Bruce, albeit for only a brief moment. He stepped forward and wrapped one hand around her head, and the other was placed on her back. And he gave her the sort of closeness and comfort that she needed.

"For you to stop crying."

She wasn't expecting that. She wasn't expecting Bruce to do anything more than give her a directive and dismiss her--that's how it usually worked, though often with grounding her as an extra perk--so when he hugged her, she almost passed out.

Almost. What she actually did was hug him back, her arms going around him tightly as her face pressed to his chest. She didn't say anything for a long moment, nor did she let him go or stop crying. Instead her shoulders shook quietly before she managed to get a grip.

"That's a present that's really hard to wrap up, you realize."

He wasn't forcing her off. That was a good sign.

"Not as hard as you would think," he replied. Which meant he had something to show Marissa. It was a little early for that, but he could get her something else for the big day.

She looked up at him---damn, was he really that tall or was she that short?---and half smiled, half snorted. She was her father's daughter in a few respects.

"World's Greatest Detective is also World's Greatest Giftwrapper?

"Check under the floorboards in your room when you get there."

When she did, she'd find that Bruce had given her something like he had given Terry. She had a new costume, upgraded with the same exact perks as Terry's. It didn't make her on par as Terry, but it gave her the same advantages. And at the same time, it had the same design as her usual costume.

"...under my floorboards?" Marissa's eyes got huge. "You...you stay right here. Seriously. Stay right here. The floorboards?" Marissa took off for her room, ripped up the floorboards and...

"OH MY GOD."

A loud rumble of her feet as she ran back to his office filled the house--she was a teenager after all when she wasn't on duty--and she launched herself at him. A new costume was hug-the-grump worthy.

"Dad...that is so awesome. And creepy that you tore up my floorboards. But awesome. Thank you."

Now the hug was awkward, for Bruce at least. He was grateful his old bones weren't that old. And... he might have smiled for a brief moment when she called him 'dad'. Might have. We're not saying it was a confirmed smile or anything.

"You're welcome."

Now he had to buy her something for the actual day of Christmas.

"Can I wear it tonight or do I gotta wait? Tim taught me this thing that's kind of like a backhandspring meets bitchslap but my other costume wasn't cut for it. I can't WAIT to try this."

She paused and eased her grip on him.

"You...accept me, don't you?"

"I prefer that you start wearing it from now on. It is better made to protect you."

He paused then, too.

"Accept you?" Is that what she's been brooding over? Whether or not Bruce accepted her as his daughter? "Yes."

Marissa smiled.

"I'll try not to do anything stupid, Dad."

"Good," he replied. She used that term to describe him again, he noticed.
