The Streets of Gotham (open)
Maria returned the bike she stole the night before. She had felt guilty about having to steal a bike, but it had been a long way back to Wayne Manor. Little did she know it wasn't the Wayne Manor she knew.

Talk about messed up. Waking up in a whole new world. This was going to take some getting used to.

She shoved her hands in her jacket pocket. Bruce had given her some cash for a cab back to Wayne Manor, but Maria wanted to see a little more of /this/ Gotham. She wanted to see what was the same and what was different. Maria was always a curious girl.

A light rain started to fall, but she continued to walk. Aimlessly walking was good for clearing one's head and she had a lot of clearing to do. Her parents, this world's versions, were still alive. A good portion of the night had been spent thinking about them and what they could be like. It was mind blowing to think they were alive.

She asked herself a million times already if she wanted to meet them. She honestly didn't know the answer to that. It was one of the big questions she would have to eventually answer.

Another one was what she was going to do if she couldn't go home. She had been trying to figure out what she wanted to do in that world and now she had a whole new world to learn about and figure out what to do it in if she stayed.

Maria sighed and continued to walk the streets of Gotham.

"Help! Someone please help me!" Came the voice from down the alleyway.

An elderly woman stood against a wall, holding her purse to her chest, shaking. Two young women dressed the clowns, both carrying whips were closing in on her.

"She seems scared, Didi," said the first girl.

"I don't know why she would be, Didi," the second girl replied.

"We JUST told her we liked her shiny new purse, Didi."

The woman started to shake. "Someone please help me!"

Maria heard the cries for help and ran to the entrance to the alley. She saw the two clowns, why did it have to be clowns, beating up on some poor grandma.

Great. Not one day in this world and she already had to fight someone.

Maria pulled a small mask out of her pocket and put it on. Then her clothes came off to reveal her costume underneath. It was time to kick some ass.

She stepped into the middle of the entrance.

"Really? A grandma? Don't you clowns have /any/ standards anymore?"

The two girls turned around at the same time.

"It would seem that we have company, Didi." said the first girl.

"I don't recall ever seeing her before, Didi."

"She must be new in town, Didi."

"Let's give her a nice warm welcome then, Didi."

The two clowns charged at Maria, whips out in front of them.

"Now that's more like it," Maria said and charged at the two clowns. She did a handspring to land right between them. This up close will take the whips out of play.

She delivered a side kick toward one and went for a quick jab with her left to the other.

"HEY!" Both Didis cried out, as their whips were knocked out of their hands.

"I don't think I like this new girl very much, Didi."

"She's very rude, isn't she, Didi?"

One of the Didis ran forward, throwing a punch at Maria. The other went for a leg sweep to knock her down.

"That's okay," Maria said as she did a back flip to avoid the leg sweep. The punch hit open air and Maria countered with a punch of her own and a back kick.

The Didis frowned. This was NOT how they intended things to go.

"I say we get out of here, Didi."

"I couldn't agree more, Didi."

They both fled.

The old woman was still shaking. Another person was trying to mug her now? She just wanted to go to the corner mart to get some milk!

"P-p-lease, I'll give you anything you want, just don't hurt me."

Maria shook her head. Criminal these days. Couldn't even count on them to put up a decent fight.

"I'm not going to hurt you ma'am. I was just trying to save you from those clowns." Literally. "Are you okay?"

The woman just wasn't listening. "Help, please help!"

And someone heard. Batman, who had been on patrol in that area, glided over to the scene of the crime.

"You heard the lady," a voice came from the rooftop.

"Now...you gonna leave her alone, or am I going to have to make you?"

Maria looked up and put her hands up. She almost smiled when she saw the shape of the mask. Bruce had given her the heads up that there was a new Batman in Gotham.

She was unarmed. "Whoa. Hold your bats there," she said. "I just drove off two clowns, literal clowns, from attacking this woman. I was just checking to see if she was alright."

Batman looked at the woman, who was still shaking.

"Really? Doesn't look that way to me."

"Maybe you should get your eyes checked," she said. "One, if I were mugging this grandma I can do it in a lot less time than those two clowns and two, I have much better taste in fashion than a criminal."

"Look, I'm pretty damn familiar with who runs around in tights and beats up the bad guys around here," he said. "And I've sure as hell never seen you around here before."

"The costume and color scheme isn't familiar at all?" she asked as she turned to give him a better view. "The name's Huntress since you seem to be a little slow on the uptake tonight."

Batman scowled. Huntress hadn't been seen in Gotham in years. "Whatever," he said, "Just do me a favor...and don't get in my way."

And with that, Batman was gone.

Maria shook her head. It was time to head back to the Batcave and home.
