A Meeting of the Minds (Before Injustice For All starts)
Rex Stewart arrives at Max Lord's office, asking to speak to the man in charge. The receptionist at the desk asks if he has an appointment and he tells her that he does not. The receptionist then launches into her auto-spiel about Mr. Lord not taking walk-in visitors as his time is very valuable, blah blah blah. Rex does the courtesy of letting her finish before offering up the magic words.

"It's about his daughter, Cindy." Rex says.

That ought to get Lord's attention.

"I'm not exactly happy about getting calls from Cindy's mother blaming me for this whole lesbian thing," Max answers. "But it could be a lot worse. Your sister's legal, and from her bank statements, Cindy's been accelerating her spending but not going over budget. Give me one good reason we shouldn't let them figure out for themselves that the relationship's a mistake?"

Rex just blinks.

"So you're basing this entire thing on law and accounting expenditures rather than the fact that your daughter wasn't...this way before now. Am I hearing that right?" Rex asks.

"Here's a reason: How about because I don't want my sister to find out that she was just a phase that Cindy was going through on her way to discovering herself? I'm sure your little pride and joy is learning the family trade just fine, but tell her to find someone else to practice her ability to screw people over with.

Nicolette is a good kid, but you and both I know this whole girl-meets-girl thing is going to lead to a lot of issues for both of them. Besides, I can't imagine that you and your wife want all of your friends at the Country Club knowing that Cindy isn't into boys.

You've got a rep to uphold, don't you, Max?" Rex asks.

"She wasn't anything before. She was a fifteen year old kid who kept her grades up and didn't date." Max starts to bristle. "And seriously, Rex? It might be weird, but if Cindy was setting out for a quick screw-someone-over experimentation, I provided her with an entire all-girl boarding school to kiss and pay off in. Apparently, she was more interested in Nicolette."

He doesn't bother to correct him about his and Claire's current marital status. He doesn't expect random young Neanderthals to keep up with their divorce-and-re-marriage cycle.
Instead, he says coldly. "I can maintain my rep no matter whose hand my daughter may be holding. Unless you have a legal foot to stand on, kid, and I know you don't, just accept that Cindy's going to get whatever she wants for now."

Did that son of a bitch just say that Cindy would get what she wanted, regardless of Nic's feelings? And that Cindy would just pay her off like some kind of whore when she was done with her?

Rex tried to be a level-headed guy, but there were times when he went looking for trouble. This hadn't been one of them. He was looking out for his sister against the depredations of a family full of white-collar con-artists and the head of said family had basically just told him that his sister wasn't a person at all. She was just a plaything for a girl with a large bank account.

"It's people like you that serve as the poster children for why the rest of the world hates America. You're greedy, amoral and people are just...pawns to you, aren't they?

Well, my sister isn't something for you daughter to play with! Call her off or I'll intervene. This was a courtesy visit, Max. I won't be so courteous if I've got to get involved." he says.

Max is annoyed that Rex does not seem to be accepting what was -- to Max -- a perfectly reasonable declaration that he wouldn't interfere in Cindy's relationship and that he took offense at the implication Cindy wasn't taken this nonsense seriously when obviously she had plenty of less serious options.

"I've been threatened by better men than you, kid. Nothing doing."

"Maybe you have, Max, but I'm not afraid of your money or power or the people you know. You and yours aren't going to hurt anyone in my family." Rex says, rising from his chair.

This was a waste of time. He'd just have to go about fixing this the old-fashioned way.

And though he'd never show it, Max is getting a little worried about the fact that Hawk is freaking out about Cindy.

"You even touch my little girl, boy, and you will regret it for the rest of your life if it gives me an aneurysm."

Boy?

"What did you call me?" Rex says as he stops, turning his head back to Max. Rex is one half-Black and it does show in his skin coloring. It would be just like some yuppie scum businessman like Max Lord to point that out when he had no other ammo to go to.

Of course, the implied threat that something would happen to Nic if something happened to Cindy got Rex's attention just a little more.

He walks right up to Max and gets directly in his face, grabbing him by his shirt collar and lifting him off the floor.

"Don't you ever threaten me or my sister, Max, or you'll be lucky if an aneurysm is the least serious medical issue you've got to deal with." he growls.

"You're aware that what you're doing right now is assault, kid?" is all Max says as he dangles there.

"That's about the last 'kid' or 'boy' left on your charge card, Max. And if this is assault, you're a lucky man. You're gettin' off easy today." Rex growls.

"Am I, now?" Max says impassively, still dangling there. "Get out of my office, kid."

Rex sets Max down on his feet...then promptly knees him in the gut. He then punches Max out.

"Yeah, you are." Rex says, before walking out of the office.

Max doubles over in pain, then lies on the floor concussed.

When his administrative assistants get him up off said floor, there'll be some phone calls to make.
