Mission Briefing
She didn't sleep, not in the conventional sense.  But her brain, along with a small handful of internal organs heavily guarded within her doll-like body, was still human and still required some measure of rest.  So one of the systems programmed into her body enabled her to shut herself down for brief periods, allowing her brain to refresh and dream.

In her dreams, she still remembered colors, vividly, not the tv-toned colors she saw now.  She smelled flowers, felt the wind upon her skin.  She held her children, kissed her husband.

In her dreams, she was still a woman.

An automated system woke her from her sleep.

ATTENTION, ATTENTION.  DOLL-WOMAN, PLASMOID, SUCKER PUNCH, PLEASE REPORT TO THE MISSION BRIEFING ROOM.  DOOM PATROL, PLEASE REPORT TO THE MISSION BRIEFING ROOM IN TEN MINUTES.

She rose from her recharge cubicle, pulling loose the power cord from the back of her neck, just under her plasticy, doll-like hair.  She dressed quickly into her green and white uniform, heading towards the briefing room.

In the short months since they had formed the Doom Patrol, she had seen numerous strange things, but some of which she would even get used to.  She had gotten used to--on some level--the power of her body.  But she would never get used to the "code-names" the Project had saddled the three of them with.  Caulder never used them, instead referring to the three of them by their real names, even though he preferred that they call him "Chief", as they typically used their names with each other.

It might not have been much of a life right now, but it was hers.

It beat going insane.

She stepped into the briefing room to find the Chief already waiting for them.

"These people really like to make out. Sheesh. I have seen more naked ass here than in any porno." She paused. "Not like I watch porn."

"Free spirits all over the place then." Roger adds. "I heard more hateful strawman-slash-woman speech than Lifetime movie of the week or white-guilt inducing film."

Lindsey frowned.

"This whole place is... wrong," she said, after a moment. "Very wrong."

A sheriff's deputy approached the trio as he rounded the corner, still straightening his tie as he walked.

His eyes narrowed as they fell on Roger.

"Somethin' I can help you folks with?"

"You can help us out by not staring at my boyfriend, sir." Johnny's face slipped into one of shame and sadness tinged with a touch of heartache and indignance. She gently lay a hand on Roger's....arm and furrowed her brow.

"We was in a real bad accident. Burned him somethin' fierce. Messed up my hands." She offered her gloved hands." My cousin Lindsey and I are going with him to this residential facility in Baton Rouge, but Roger here read somethin' about the architecture of the old Bon Temps cemetery and just had to see it before goin in. I'm thinkin' we're lost though because all we're finding is people more interesting in kissin' each other than giving directions. Now, y'all are friendly but we just would like our directions, sir. Can you help?"

Johnny was glad she'd read all the tourist shit in the car. She was also glad that she was pretty much a born con artist.

Roger slouched, mumbling. "Some idiot teenager ran us off the road.." He moved closer to Lindsey.

Color Lindsey impressed that Johnny was such a good liar. She doubted that she'd have been able to come up with anything on the spot like that. While they could use their Project ID to get some cooperation, secrecy was the watchword when dealing with locals usually.

Especially in potentially troubled situations like this.

"Said something about some old houses dating back to the War," Lindsey added. "Though it would be nice to see."

The deputy frowned, momentarily mollified.

"Well," he said, getting just a little angry at being put in his place, "I reckon you folk ought to talk with Mr. Hexxx. Ain't nobody 'round here who knows more than him."

Score. Johnny smiled kindly.

"Thank you, sir. Where might we find Mr. Hexxx?"

"And do you know if he's likely to have any anti-bacterial ointment? You end up itching something fierce from these burns. Right now they're awfully rank too..." He starts to reach for the bandages, as if to show the deputy.

One thing that could always be said for Roger, at least, was that he was even better at drawing attention than she was. They were a lot alike, in some ways, both essentially little lost pieces of humanity inside shells.

"Thank-you, Deputy," she said, as kindly as she could muster. She didn't much care for the slight hunger in the deputy's eyes when he looked her and Johnny over.

She frankly didn't much care for this town at all.

"I reckon he's probably up at the courthouse," the deputy said. He pointed up the road. "About two mile that way," he went on. "Can't miss it."

He beat a very hasty retreat before the bandages could come off.

"I am so grossed out right now. At this town, not you Roger. Let's do this and get it over with so we can get back to a nice normal place. Or New Orleans. Something."

"No offense taken, sweets." Roger waves a hand. "Glad we ran him off. I think my virtue was in danger."

He heads for their ride.

"Ugh," Lindsey said. "I could feel him mentally undressing me. The sooner we find something I can hit, the better."

She was not surprised at all that Cadmus's mess was behind this mess.

Johnny sighed as she headed for the car.

"I'm gonna end up someone's lunch."
