Mad World
The young brunette girl sits bound to the chair, crying softly as she looks down the body of a petite blond girl, no younger than twenty-five. The blond woman wears a cowl or a hood, laying unmoving on the cold concrete. Her body is positioned in solemn rest as she lies on the floor, as though she were only sleeping rather than dead.

The brunette girl's gaze drifts upward, across the room, to her captor. He sits facing a cage with two birds inside, teasing them with his finger as they flit about from end to end.

"Why are you doing this to me?" the brunette asks, fear coloring her tone.

There is silence for several minutes. When the girl gives up on an answer, he speaks in a deep, rough voice, one that hasn't seen use in some time.

"You're helping me send a message to an old friend. You'll remind him of someone he loves. You'll die and he'll return here, where it all started, to finish a game we started years ago." he says, continuing to tease the birds.

"I didn't do anything to you! Do you want money! My dad will pay you anything you want!" she pleads. She'd hated the idea of moving to Gotham from Star City, but Dad wanted to take that stupid job with Wayne Industries and uprooted them all. She missed her old friends, her mother and her life. Her birthday was yesterday and that had gone horribly.

She'd ended up here.

"I don't want your money. Real art isn't about making money." he snarls. "It's about evoking an emotional experience from your audience. Take what I've done here. The death of the woman on the floor upsets you, makes you afraid, makes you wonder. You can't help but hope, deep down, that she didn't suffer. But everyone suffers, Jenna. No matter how quickly we die, we all suffer." he says, sighing.

"Please...don't do this to me. Please..." the brunette says, sobbing loudly as her captor walks toward her. He reaches out to make her look him in eyes.

"You're not who I wanted, Jenna, but you'll have to do." he says.

---------

Two days later, Gotham Police receive an anonymous tip leading them to a warehouse in the Narrows. The bodies of the young women are found, posed in solemn rest, each clutching a small robin. A spray-painted red arrow lays on the ground beside each of them, their bodies several hours cold.

The only other information the police have is a message spray painted on the northern wall of the warehouse.

RED HURTS

One of Tim's primary lessons had been to pay attention to everyone and that everyone included people who would at first blush seem harmless. Like homeless men. Marissa notices him as he moves towards the dumpster and when he unloads something...it doesn't settle well with her.

Then she sees the arrow.

Without a word to Batman, she moved silently into position and then as the man began to push his cart away, she dropped on him.

"Give it up," she growled, voice low.

The homeless man is utterly defenseless against the pounce and goes sprawling to the floor. He quickly scrambles to turn over, backing away just a few feet away from Robin on his butt across the concrete and away from the bag.

"Please, don't hurt me!" the homeless man says, his face still partially covered.

"Show me what's in the bag."

She couldn't see his face, but he was reacting with genuine fear. This wasn't an abnormal response, though it was usually Batman getting the terrified reactions while she just did the sidekick work. She approached him even as he scooted away, reaching out to grab his coat.

The homeless man quakes with fear as Robin grabs his coat and keeps him from moving.

"He said...he said I'd get enough money to pay for my medicine if I just dropped the bag off! I was just followin' orders!" he says, his voice quaking in fear.

This might have been accompanied by the scent of urine

Though impossible to truly discern beneath her mask, Robin's eyes narrowed.

"Who told you this? Who ordered you to drop off the bag?"

A knife sails over Marissa's shoulder and lands in the homeless man's throat, he clutches at it as the blood begins to spray.

"I like this piece. I think I'll call it 'Robin's Failure'." says a voice from behind her.

If Robin turns around, she'll see that the dumpster has opened silently and inside stands a man dressed in all black, with God-knows-how many hours of trash, debris and maybe blood upon him. He wears a Guy Fawkes mask on his face and a hat, seeming to smile at Robin through the mask.

"You know, you don't look like My Old Friend, young lady, but I'm glad you came. The girls and I spent all day waiting, hoping you'd stop by and see us.

Mr. Jones served his purpose and now he's more famous in dying than he was in his life. He's not my normal fare, but I suppose he'll do." the Artist says, hopping out of the trash can to stand a few feet from Robin, cocking his wrist slightly. Another knife appears in his hand as he looks at her.

"I suppose it's close enough to Thanksgiving to carve up a new little bird." he says, his voice colored with something like anticipation.

"Your move, Girl Wonder." he says.

Inwardly Marissa wanted to throw up. A man had just been murdered under her very grasp and the killer had emerged from a dumpster, covered in filth and waiting to kill again.

A killer who seemed to have tangoed with Tim. Good information, considering Tim had taught her a great deal about hand to hand combat. She'd have to rely on something else.

"All I see is a coward," she growled. "A filthy one." Her suit is armored despite its thinness and it would take a very long, sharp blade to fully penetrate the layers of leather and kevlar enough to truly hurt her. Unless he found a weakness. But she knew those. He did not.

Robin does a standing drop into a roll, kicking her leg out to send the killer off balance, not knock him to the ground. It would get her closer, letting her use a punch.

Tim would cringe.

As Marissa moves, so does the Artist, springing backward away from her kick and backflipping into another ready position.

Tim said he'd been Trained. By someone with a lot of skill.

The Artist watches Marissa and invites her to attack him again.

"You fight like him, but not completely. You've been taught elsewhere, too." he says.

"Would you like to model for me?" he asks, then lunges forward with his knife, trying to impale her.

She lets him lunge at her because it suits her purpose in letting him closer. But his blade does not find purchase in her flesh. Instead, she grabs his wrist and turns her shoulder into his forward motion. It forces him to flip over her her. The instant he drops from that, she moves in with a ready punch.

"I don't model."

The Artist flips over Marissa's shoulder, dropping the knife as he sails over her. Rather than falling to the ground, he does land on his booted feet, but it's not perfect. He stumbles slightly, which lets Marissa catch him with the punch.

He staggers back a couple of steps, then quickly shakes his head, trying to recover. The Guy Fawkes mask smiles back at her as he sets himself again.

He nods in approval.

"You should, Robin. You'd make an amazing dead woman. Or, can I call you Marissa?" he asks.

Marissa?

She kicks him in the gut.

"Who's Marissa?"

He takes the kick to the gut and catches her foot, then ducks low to sweep her leg out from under her.

"Don't play dumb. It doesn't look good on you." the Artist says, trying to pounce atop her.

It's awkward and she'll probably sprain her wrist and regret this, but when messes with her leg, she propels her body backwards. It gets him out of her grasp, but she falls to the ground and he's able to get atop her, though she's already working to fight him off.

"Is she one of the bodies? Who is she?"

"Don't tell me you missed the clues, Marissa. The brunettes with the little Robins in their hands when they die? I knew it would get attention, though I was hoping for the boy-version of Robin." the Artist says.

"The coffee cup from the Starbucks you go to every morning on the way to school was inspired, if I do say so myself." he says, reaching in to grasp at her throat and strangle her.

As he went for her throat, Marissa brought her legs up to get herself some leverage, moving her hands under him, towards his chest, palms out rather than making the mistake of going for his wrists.

"I don't drink coffee. Try again."

She put her entire force into hitting against his chest and lifting her hips and back at the same time.

The Artist is pushed off of Marissa and goes sprawling. He kips up to his feet and turns to face her, leveling a kick at her mid-section.

Marissa is on her feet quickly after she shoves the Artist off of her and she throws two shuriken at him, but his kick hits her, knocking her aim off and sending her backwards with a sharp cry.

Batman had been letting Robin handle things on her own, as he knew that she wanted to stand on her own two feet. But now, there was no holding back. He sprung in, throwing a batarang at the Artist.

The Artist barely dodges the incoming batarangs and notes the arrival of Marissa's senior partner. The Batman didn't impress him nearly as much as Red Robin did, but this was now an uneven fight.

"I'll see you again soon, Robin." he says, then turns and runs for it toward the harbor.

As the Artist turned to run, Robin moved to get up but couldn't quite scramble to her feet fast enough. He got away.

"DAMN IT!" She hobbled towards Terry.

"Stay off that leg," Batman instructed, picking her up in his arms.

"I'm taking you back to the cave, and then you're telling me everything you know about that guy.

This isn't the first time you've run into him, isn't it?"

"I don't know, but he kept saying it. Terry, he called me by my name and the last three victims have been found with things around them that the police dismissed as trash but...it's all specific things to me. The coffee cups, for example." She looked up at him. "I don't know how much I am a target or how much I am inspiration but I do know two things. One is that this guy is nuts and needs stopped. Second, someone's gotta lure him out who can actually defend herself.

"I'm going to put myself up as bait."
