Mad World
The young brunette girl sits bound to the chair, crying softly as she looks down the body of a petite blond girl, no younger than twenty-five. The blond woman wears a cowl or a hood, laying unmoving on the cold concrete. Her body is positioned in solemn rest as she lies on the floor, as though she were only sleeping rather than dead.

The brunette girl's gaze drifts upward, across the room, to her captor. He sits facing a cage with two birds inside, teasing them with his finger as they flit about from end to end.

"Why are you doing this to me?" the brunette asks, fear coloring her tone.

There is silence for several minutes. When the girl gives up on an answer, he speaks in a deep, rough voice, one that hasn't seen use in some time.

"You're helping me send a message to an old friend. You'll remind him of someone he loves. You'll die and he'll return here, where it all started, to finish a game we started years ago." he says, continuing to tease the birds.

"I didn't do anything to you! Do you want money! My dad will pay you anything you want!" she pleads. She'd hated the idea of moving to Gotham from Star City, but Dad wanted to take that stupid job with Wayne Industries and uprooted them all. She missed her old friends, her mother and her life. Her birthday was yesterday and that had gone horribly.

She'd ended up here.

"I don't want your money. Real art isn't about making money." he snarls. "It's about evoking an emotional experience from your audience. Take what I've done here. The death of the woman on the floor upsets you, makes you afraid, makes you wonder. You can't help but hope, deep down, that she didn't suffer. But everyone suffers, Jenna. No matter how quickly we die, we all suffer." he says, sighing.

"Please...don't do this to me. Please..." the brunette says, sobbing loudly as her captor walks toward her. He reaches out to make her look him in eyes.

"You're not who I wanted, Jenna, but you'll have to do." he says.

---------

Two days later, Gotham Police receive an anonymous tip leading them to a warehouse in the Narrows. The bodies of the young women are found, posed in solemn rest, each clutching a small robin. A spray-painted red arrow lays on the ground beside each of them, their bodies several hours cold.

The only other information the police have is a message spray painted on the northern wall of the warehouse.

Marissa sat in the cave with the table in front of her covered in spread out crime scene photographs. The two dead girls found in the Narrows last night were just the latest in a series of dead young women found in the Narrows, all with the same creepy details.

The robins in their hands particularly bothered her and whiles she was reluctant to admit it, she didn't want to go over the details alone. Terry was busy. So she called Maxine.

Maxine didn’t know Marissa that well but if someone in the bat family was actually asking for help it was a good idea to do so. She hadn’t looked too much into to the case yet other than what was on the news but she was pretty quick at picking up on the details of a case as Terry and Bruce had learned.

When Maxine arrived, Marissa motioned for her to look at the various things spread in front of her, the photos, the reports.

"What do you make of it?"

“There’s a lot of things this could mean but he’s just plain sick is obvious,” Maxine said looking at everything.

"He has a type." Marissa showed her more pictures. "All these girls look quite a bit alike."

“Yeah the pattern with this is undeniably serial,” Maxine says, “That can tell us a lot though the better evidence is when there is deviation from the pattern.” She was already starting to look for what to enter in her profiling program.

Marissa paced for a moment.

"Maxine, expand the search to all murders of women between eighteen and twenty-five for the whole region in the last two years. We can eliminate things like death by gunshot. No killer starts with a perfect pattern."

The robins bothered her. A lot.

“No they don’t and they typically start in their own backyard,” Maxine says who starts doing just that, “However those are the ones that are hardest to find since they are still nervous about it all.”

"How many bodies have been left in the Narrows in the last six months? How many all into our age range for females?" Marissa was already working on a secondary strategy.

Marissa sent her location to Terry, just informatively. If something major was going on he didn't have to show up. If he didn't she wouldn't mind it, though. Having some company as she hunkered down and waited for the murderer to show up would be a plus. The Narrows, even to a cape, were creepy.

Marissa was Terry's partner. He wasn't going to just let investigate something that could be extremely dangerous on her.

A short while later, Batman arrived where Robin was.

"What've we got?"

"Ritualistic serial killer. Has a particular type...two actually, kills them on the third day, dumps their bodies here in the narrows, stages them with an arrow painted by their bodies and has robins clutched in their hands."

She paused.

"Today is day three for the two girls gone missing outside Club Fervor. This is his dumping ground. He's going to show. And I'm going to take him down. That's the plan."

As Marissa rattled off the killer's types, she wasn't entirely oblivious that the brunette's statistics echoed her own slightly, but she wasn't unsettled by it. It wasn't like hers was a particularly distinctive appearance.

"I didn't say alone, but I want to take him down. You can back me up. This one time."

Marissa made the call to the Birds of Prey, sending them basic information on the killer and then asked them to meet her. She wasn't comfortable discussing the plan any way but in person.

Mia was the first to arrive on the scene. She knew Marissa when she was living with Tim, though they weren't extremely close. She was a little surprised that she'd called her, actually.

"Hey kid," she said when she arrived, giving Marissa a small smile.

Mia looked over the file. Her eyes widened when she finished.

"I know this fucker," she said in a snarl. "I was helping Tim track him down when he first came to Star City."

She looked over the pictures, spotting the red arrow in one of the pictures, pointing to the girl holding the robin.

"I...don't think you're the only girl in Tim Drake's life that this bastard wants to add to his collection of 'art'." She could be hazarding a wild guess, but something about this just didn't feel right.
