Admission of Guilt (Open to Avia, Barda and Scott)
An hour after Hope's abduction, Rex asks Avia to call her parents and tell them he needs to speak to them immediately at the Brownstone.

Rather than hunt them down, he'll let the people with Boom Tubes come to him for ease of travel...and because most people would rather die someplace familiar than elsewhere.

	Avia'd just finished up a show when the call had come, but had managed to Boom Tube Home, and then to the Brownstone into pretty record time. "Rex?" she asked, a little worried when she didn't see Hope anywhere. Rex's tone on the phone had already been worrisome enough... (Reply to this)(Thread)

	When Avia had told Barda and Scott that Rex wanted to figure them, the first thing that popped into Barda's mind was that something was that something was wrong with Hope. Her husband had talked her out of wearing her full armor, but she'd brought along her Mega Rod. Just in case. When the portal from the Boom Tube opened, Barda had a serious expression her face. 	Avia was virtually paralyzed. Seeing what had happened to Hope, seeing Darkseid in the "flesh." Avia has traveled bits of the universe with the Forever People, but these horrors, combined with the sheer oppressive nature that seemed as much a part of this world as the air had rendered her nearly senseless. As one, the mob rushes forward toward Barda, but Himon stands between the convicts and his Aunt.

"Aunt Barda, I'll hold these! Try to get to Darkseid!" he yells as they crowd around him.

Of course, Kalibak, appears at that moment to block off Barda's path.

"My brother's whore seeks battle, does she? I will beat you into submission the way I did your daughter." he snarls, charging forward with his axe.

The beams slam into him and Rex vanishes from Hope's arms and ends up at Darkseid's feet on the balcony of his Citadel. Darkseid grabs Rex by the throat and begins to squeeze.

"The Anti-Life Equation. Now. Or young Hope will understand what it is to lose a loved one at an early age." he says, his grip growing tighter as Rex kicks wildly at Darkseid.

On the Cerberus Ship

A female Cerberus soldier meets the Free Family, Himon and Rex as they head away from the scene. The inmates disperse as the attacks between the ships begin.

A short time later, Rex is placed in a medical bay on the lead Cerberus ship and the doctors set to work on him immediately.

Hours later, a female doctor approaches the Free Family and Himon.

"This Rex is one of the most determined men I've ever seen. Many men who've suffered his injuries die long before they can get help. He's alive, but there's been extensive damage to his vocal cords.

It's too soon to tell when, or if, he'll speak again. We expect him to fully recover physically, but it will take time." she says.

Rex is resting, albeit uncomfortably, when Hope finds him. He feels like he tried to swallow his mace, axe and sword all at once, his throat hurts so badly. The doctors told him not to try to speak...and they told him that him speaking ever again is a 50/50 prospect.

He can't imagine life without being able to speak. What would he tell Mom, Carter and Nicolettte? Oh, that's right: nothing. Can't speak, can't tell them anything.

Could he still lead the JSA if he was speech-impaired? Would they even look at him the same? Saving Hope was worth fighting and dying for, but what if he could never tell her that he loved her ever again?

She would find him contemplating these things upon her arrival.

While Hope was concerned to see how Rex was doing, she couldn't help but blame herself for what had happened to him.

Her fault that he might not be able to speak ever again. If all of this hadn't have happened, Rex would still be alright, and not worrying about if he was ever going to be able to speak again.

Would she still love him if he never regained his voice? Of course she would.

She smiled weakly when she entered the room. "Hey," she said, going over to sit at the side of his bed.

He pressed the button and cut the feed to the camera when the young man noticed it. Himon's information about Darkseid had proven correct, but the seeing the boy was an unexpected bonus.

The fleets were nearly too late, but they'd made it in enough time to save everyone, the boy most especially.

"Risking your life for love, are you, boy? I guess some apples /don't/ roll far from the tree." he says softly, pulling up the image of Rex Stewart looking at the camera again.

He presses another button on the console and a second screen brings up a picture of a young boy in the care of his other operatives clear across the universe. He studies the pictures, the features of both for a long moment and smiles to himself.

"No, not far from the tree at all." he says to himself, then shuts down both screens. He has work to do, starting with making sure that Darkseid pays for this.
