He's never yet found a way to control this. Once it starts, its done. On the other hand, thankfully, this isn't a bad one. The cutlass and belaying pin don't have minds of their own like the gangster ventriloquist dummy did, and thanks to his other powers, he fights just fine with them, quickly proving capable of fighting the Atlantean with his weird weapons.
"Arrr, it'll be the gangplank for ye, ye scurvy sea-dog."
/It should be ok... long as it doesn't get worse./
