Out For a Swim
Cait needed some quiet and lately the Titan's Tower was anything but quiet. Pippi and Iris could make a person feel like they had four cups of coffee just by being nearing them. Not to mention her mother was now staying there. Cait needed some time alone and that meant she went for a swim.

She headed south down the coast with Hope at her side.

"You and Arthur are so much alike sometimes that I wonder how you don't get along better. You each ask each other to accept the other without offering any compromise in return." Cerdian says sadly.

Cerdian did not seem as shocked as he should be by that news. He'd seen something showing that Arthur and Mera were in danger, but nothing concrete. This wasn't good, which forced Cerdian to ask the questions he knew Cait wouldn't want to hear.

"How do you plan to reclaim your birthright, Caitria?" Cerdian asks plainly. "If you need aid, I'm sure the rest of the Titans will move Heaven and Sea to help you, as will I . We'll need to find Arthur as well, but your people need you now.

If you won't fight for Atlantis, who will?" he asks.

Cait looked away.

By Dis why did he have to bring that up and ask that question? She could feel Atlantis wrapping strings and her and pulling them tight. Pulling her back into what she thought she had escaped, what she so desperately had tried to escape.

She didn't want her birthright, she never had. She didn't want to be a part of the insanity that was Atlantis. It was poison and it was working its way inside of her. She could feel it slowly starting to kill her spirit and her soul.

Still, she could not deny who she was and what she was born to.

She looked back to Cerdian.

"Arthur will be found and he will reclaim his throne." She didn't know exactly when she stopped calling him Dad, Daddy or Father, but it had happened. He was Arthur now. Perhaps it was another attempt to deny who she was.

	"No," she shot back. Despite their issues Cait still loved Arthur. He was her father and she missed the days when she was little and he would sit her on his knee and he would smile. "What comes after that, Cait? /You/ are the princess. There's no one else who can do the job. Someday, Arthur won't be king anymore, and it will fall to you to rule Atlantis.

You can't hide from that anymore than I could hide from who I am." Cerdian says sadly.

"This strife between you and your father needs to be healed, Caitria, and that healing needs to come from you. Arthur is old, he's cranky, he's imperious...and he's earned that. I'm not saying give up the surface, or give up Ty and that Titans. I'm asking you to embrace who you were born to be for the sake of our people." Cerdian says.

"I don't want it," Cait said. "Atlantis is poison. It destroys people who sit on that throne. Look at Arthur. Look at every ruler before him. It slowly eats at them. It poisons their soul and twists it into something horrible. I have the Chronicles. I've read them. I want no part of it."

"I was hoping Arthur would name Koryak as his heir and I would be free to be myself, not what he wants me to be. I can't do it Cerdian. It has already taken Koryak from my life. I won't give up anymore. I can't be the daughter Arthur wants. I can't be the princess Atlantis needs."

The waters around them started to churn as Cait's emotions started to slip from her control.

Cerdian's hopes fall with each passing minute. He loves Cait dearly, but to see her so unwilling to claim her birthright and give her people a chance is disheartening. Allowing a pretender to remain on the throne is less pleasant, but at this rate, Arthur and Mera would need to bear another child for the succession to continue.

"Heavy is the head that wears the crown, Cait, but that crown was entrusted to your family. I will not trouble you further on this, for now, but we will discuss this again." Cerdian tells her.

When the waters begin to churn around them, Cerdian takes hold of the sea shell necklace Cait gave him so long ago and begins to murmur softly, exerting some of his own influence upon the waters to smooth them. He does not try to override or oppose Cait's power with his own; it is more that he tries to match it to hers in order to calm the waters are around them.

"Your focus needs focus, Princess Little Fish." he teases.

"That crown has made my family insane," Cait said. "It has poisoned everyone of us. I won't let it poison me any further."

She looked away. She could see the disappointment on his face. That was worse than Arthur being mad at her.

Her stomach twisted up into a knot. She hated this. She hated Atlantis and everything about it, yet a part of her wanted to swim back and fix everything for the people.

Did she forfeit a life with happiness in it for one of duty, insanity and misery? Did she give up all that was ever good in her life like Ty and the Titans to accept her position and do her duty?

When she was little she used to dream of being Queen of Atlantis. She remembered playing in her quarters with a school of fish as her subjects. She would give them royal commands and giggle as she did. It had been fun, but now that the reality was here ruling wasn't a pleasant thought. Not after reading the Chronicles.

	Cait shrugged. "The same. Giant sea-creatures trying to destroy San Francisco. Iris and Pippi trying to keep the Nemean Lion as a pet. Somehow I ended up as team leader." "There's no somehow to it, Cait. The ability to lead runs in your blood. I know it's the last thing you want, but it's always going to show itself. You're always going to be the person others look to for strength, for orders, for command." Cerdian tells her.

"And despite your wishes, you're always going to rise to the occasion becaus that's just who you are." he smiles.

"Although...I will admit that I'm not surprised it's Iris that wants to keep a lion as a pet. She'd keep a pod of dolphins if anyone allowed it." he chuckles.

"What if you just took some time off from the Titans? You and Ty could try the normal thing for a while, maybe you could consider giving Atlantis a chance, and you could see the rest of the world and determine where your path lies, Cait.

You don't have to feel as though you're trapped in your own life." he says.

"I hate that name," she grumbled. She shook her head. "To say Arthur doesn't like Ty is an understatement. He attacked Ty the first time he met him. My birthday was a disaster. Putting Arthur anywhere near Ty is just asking for trouble."

She looked away.

She was trapped in her own life. Her birth had been her sentence and she would spend the rest of her life unable to escape.

"It's difficult for any parent to see their child grow up. You've met my mother. She's just as exacting as Arthur in terms of who I should be with. 'A nice Atlantean girl who will bear you beautiful children' she says.

I think if I hear those words from her one more time, I may scream." he says.

"What is his issue with Ty, Cait? Has he ever told you?" Cerdian asks.

"No, she'll just make her life unpleasant until outweighs the idea of being with me. Mother's done that to every girl that's shown interest in me to date." Cerdian says.

"Again, I think you two are too hard on each other because you're so much alike. You both want your own way without having to compromise." Cerdian chuckles.

"I hope someday that you two will find a way back to each other. He needs you as much as you need him."

"Aunt Dolphin will come around," Cait said. "I think her and Arthur are still holding out some hope that you and I will get together. Which is totally weird because you're like a brother to me, but it doesn't stop them."

"Arthur's idea of compromise is me doing what he wants me to do and that's go back to Atlantis, find a nice Atlantean boy and have babies. I said no."

"I asked for time on the surface before going back to Atlantis. He refused. He demanded I go back. All I want is more time to see what the surface has to offer and find myself. He won't listen."

Cait looked away. "He'll never accept Ty, Cerdian. Now matter how much I love Ty or how happy he makes me, Arthur will not accept me being with a boy. I will always pick Ty over Atlantis."

In a strange way, it hurt to hear Cait say such things. Ty was a good guy, but it felt as if Cait had no pride in her own people, something that Cerdian has recently developed a great deal of.

"I guess I understand your position, Cait. I won't trouble you about it further. When you have a plan in place to save Arthur and retake Poseidonis, contact me. I'll be there to help." Cerdian says.
