Hitting the dusty trail (open to Outsider's reactions)
Lian had been giving this some thought. Ever since she'd discovered that her mother was alive.

Cheshire needed to be stopped. While Cheshire was her mother, and yes, Lian did love her, and knew that her mother loved her in her own way, she couldn't just let her keep killing people.

She had to find. Had to make sure that she stopped her for good. While she wouldn't kill her own mother, she could at least make sure that she was put away somewhere where she WOULDN'T escape this time.

This was something she had to do on her own. As much as she trusted her new team, it was something she had to do with no help.

Besides, where she was going...she couldn't take her team. Hell, she couldn't even take her costume. Jade Arrow had to be left behind, and Lian had to become someone else.

Grabbing her bow and throwing knives, she left a note for the Outsiders.

Hey all,

I have to go away for awhile. I have family things that need to be taken care of, and I don't know how long it's going to take me. J'anna, you and Red Robin are in charge until I get back.

-Lian

Lian left the note taped to the fridge and left the building. She had a plane to catch.

Max had a few ideas as to what she might mean by family things. As much as he would have liked to look into things his mom had taught him a few things about family and would simply keep his theories to himself and do no more with them. This all seemed a lot like Omerta to him and he would respect that.

He read the note and he didn't like it one bit. He knew how messed up Lian was about Cheshire being out there, but going after her alone wasn't the right move.

She had a head start, but Red Robin was sure he could find her given enough time. He'd start his people in on the work in the midst of the new person he was training.

When Lian resurfaced, he'd find her. That was that.

J'anna was eating her third pack of Chocos when she sauntered up, read the note and shook her head.

"She does this. Impulsive things, I mean. Lian got us kicked out of Girl Scouts when we were kids because she insisted that the troop leader was a White Martian who had to be taken out so she snuck off on her own and came up with this elaborate plan."

She munched thoughtfully.

"You do know where she's gone, correct?"

J'anna knew. J'anna always knew and in this particular case (that being Lian Freaking Harper) the knowing had nothing to do with Martian telepathy.

"Yes. She went looking for her psychopathic mother because she thinks she can save her. You can't save someone who doesn't want to be saved, J'anna." Red Robin says gruffly, turning away from the note, his cape trailing after him.

"I'll be in the lab if anyone needs me." he says.

"No, but you can let them entirely screw up for themselves. I know geographically exactly where she is right now. Latitude and longitude even. But this is not about Saving Cheshire. I know Lian better than that."

J'anna turned her head a bit and watched his cape trail a bit as he moved.

"What do you do in the lab?"

"Work, invent things, improve security." Red Robin says succinctly.

He's never been accused of being chatty.

"It sounds taxing and like it should not be done on an empty stomach. Would you care for lunch? I made mac and cheese. Not the from a box kind, either. The real kind. I made a lot." J'anna smiled at him a little hopefully.

Food sounded good and Tim couldn't remember when he'd last eaten, but he couldn't spare the time. Besides, he often got so into work that he ignored the bits of food that he did eat and he didn't want to insult J'anna by not eating her cooking.

"Thank you, but I'll have to take a rain check. If I don't follow these leads now, they may go cold and I'll be back at square one." Red Robin says.

"I...could help with the leads while you ate? Hunger has a tendency to cause certain synapses in the brain to work less efficiently, thus hindering the ability to think critically."

He's not sure why she's so interested in helping him, but...he is hungry, and if he's completely honest with himself, he still misses Marissa, even with the help of the new person he met out on the Triangle.

Red Robin thinks for a moment, then heads toward the lab.

"Sure, if you're really interested." he calls back behind him.

Success! J'anna smiled broadly.

"I'll go get the food! I'll be right there!"

Excitedly, she put together a big bowl of food for Red Robin, grabbed some for herself, a couple of beverages and, almost as an afterthought, a pack of Chocos. In moments, she'd show up in the lab.

"Ok. How can I help?"

He'd forgotten Martians were that fast.

"Well, I have reason to believe that a prominent Star City businessman is in league with an information courier calling himself the Shadow Broker. The problem is, I've narrowed down to five different people, but none of them stands out." Red Robin says.

"I believe that one of the people here..." he shows J'anna pictures of three men and two women, "sells information to crime syndicates, terrorist organizations and several super-villains. This person has vast resources and contacts world-wide. My info net hasn't been able to touch him yet, and I think he's helping the Momchev crime syndicate that's trying to get a hold in the Triangle.

I took down one of their lieutenants last week, but I didn't have any luck cracking him." Red Robin says, starting in on the food.

He takes one bite, then another...and still another. Damn it really was good!

J'anna looked at each picture carefully, nodding as she listened to Red Robin speak. They were mostly familiar faces, some more than others, all well-known.

"Some people are difficult to crack with conventional methods of information-retrieval. This lieutenant...where is he now?"

He finishes chewing before answering.

"The morgue. He was arrested that night, but did the whole poison-capsule-under-the-tongue thing on the way to the station." Red Robin says.

"While that lead went cold, I managed to find out that all five of these people will be at a charity dinner next Thursday. I need to get a closer look at each of them and see if I can crack them. Of course, I can't do it in costume." Red Robin says.

J'anna nodded.

"You will need to go to this event. It shouldn't be hard to get an invitation to the soiree, but you would certainly need some assistance. Good as you are it is difficult to do recon on five people simultaneously entirely alone." She looked over the pictures again. "I'm telepathic, you know. I could go with you and help you figure out which one is the bad guy."

He hadn't thought of needing help with this, mostly because he didn't have anyone to ask. Lian was gone, Mia was usually busy and Marissa was back in Gotham.

J'anna was offering her help and skills with this, with seemingly nothing asked in return. He wasn't sure how he felt about that.

"You'd get dinner out of it and the help would be useful." Tim says, as if he's trying to find a reason not to do this. When he doesn't come across one, he nods.

"All right, you're in. What time should I pick you up?" he asks.

"I like food and we're technically teammates." J'anna nodded, then smiled broadly. "Event starts at eight. Get me at 7:15. That gives us a chance to get in and mingle as people arrive. It'll be easier to sort through the crowd when it's quieter."

Red Robin nods. "Six-thirty it is. We need to formulate plans for what could happen and make sure we're on the same page.

By the way...the food is great. Thank you, J'anna. I...appreciate it." he says.

"Black-tie event. Dress to impress. I know I will." he says, almost allowing a smile to escape his lips.

He rarely smiles anymore, even with Marissa. He knows the day he stopped and why, even all these years later.

"I think I can do that." She smiled at him and got up. "There's more food in the fridge. Eat all you want. I have Chocos." Another smile from her and she'd leave him be, her head already thinking about what she was going to wear...and possibly what Red Robin's backside looked like in nice pants.

If he elected to go to get more food....he'd find that the dish was very clearly labeled for him with very serious J'anna threats of "touch Red Robin's food and an Angry Martian will kick your ass."

Calypso read the note, but she didn't understand. She knew about Lian's mom being the villain who attacked Queen Industries and figured out for herself that Lian was reacting to that. However,

Calypso didn't understand the urge to run off and take care of it by herself.

She thought friends were the people a person could trust. Why didn't Lian trust Calypso to help her with this? What was the point of being teammates and friends, or even making a team if she was going to bail out so early? Calypso walked away from the note, contemplating what she should do about the situation.

One thing was for sure, though. She was not happy with Lian at all.
