Alive...barely.
(Back-dated to June 1st)

Time flows away from him too quickly then speeds away from him as he pulls himself out of the murky waters of Keystone City, clutching the wound in his gut. He can feel it burning already and wonders how long it will be before the fever and hallucinations start. Cheshire used a poison like this on him once, during his training. He'd been sick for three days, all the while trying to keep hired killers off his back.

Compared to that, this should be a walk in the park. Stumbling away from the scene of his fight with Merlyn's daughter, Robert Queen fights to put one foot in front of the other. Coming upon a passerby as he stumbles down the streets of Keystone, he manages to steal said person's cellular phone as he doesn't have one.

It takes him a couple of tries to dial the number in question and he leaves a voice-mail when he realizes she's not available.

"It's Robert. I need you. I'll....be there in two days..." he groans, before hanging up.

---

Two days later, there is a knock on Jane's door. If she answers, Robert Queen, aka Jake King, promptly falls through her front door, pale, feverish and in very bad shape.

"Thanks. I'm kinda having a bad week, as you can tell." Robert says groggily. He lets her help him drink.

"How have you been?" he asks.

She chuckles and almost pets his hair. It seems like the thing to do. But she isn't sure if she wants to be that close to him emotionally at the moment.

"Any week I haven't had to pull my gun or wear some kind of protection is a good week. I did a surveillance gig."

He drinks his fill and allows himself to lie back on the couch. He needs to shower, stat, and he will. Maybe it will help clear some of the cobwebs in his head. He still has no idea what he called himself on the phone, so he's oblivious to any distance on her part.

"That is a good week for you. You still look great, though." he says.

If she lets him. With an injury like that he needs to be careful about bathing. Hell, she might even offer him a sponge bath if it makes him feel better.

She thinks then cracks a grin. "What? Did you expect me to not look fantastic," she's teasing him now.

"Oh, you're trying to take advantage of my altered state to get me in trouble with words. Clever, but I'm onto you, Jane." he says.

"You get hotter each time I see you." he says, closing his eyes. He opens them again.

"Yep, even hotter." he grins, teasing back.

She laughs softly. "Oh no if I was going to take advantage of you.... Well. It wouldn't be with words."

She smirks at him and winks. Not that she'll be doing that. Not while he is hurt. Also not while knowing he gave her a different name over the phone.

"And you really are a charmer."

"You're the first person to say that." he says. Technically, it's true. One of the few things about himself that he can attribute to his poor-excuse-for-a-father.

"Thank you for opening the door, Jane, and for patching me up. I promise, I'll be out of your hair tomorrow." he says, wincing slightly as he shifts position.

"And I'll find a way to repay your kindness." he says.

"Jake..." She trails off then shakes her head. This is complicated.

"You were hurt. You still are. I don't leave people when they need me. You don't need to repay me."

She would like the truth. But she is not going to demand it. A small part of her cares about him. She thinks caring about someone means letting them come clean when they're ready to.

"In case you haven't noticed, Jane, I'm a little bad about letting people take care of me, most of the time. I...was raised to be self-sufficient, to be able to survive on famine because there was no clue when one would feast again." he tells her.

"My mother was a very hard woman and father abandoned me, as I'm sure we talked about, but I was also always taught to repay kindness with kindness." he says.

"You probably have questions as to how I came to be this way." Robert says, knowing that Jane is an inquisitive person by nature and profession. Besides, if he didn't give her at least that much, he'd be putting her at risk in case that psycho woman tracked him back here. Putting Jane at risk is the last thing he wants to do.

"Ask me what you need to ask me, and I'll answer you as best I can." he says.

She raises one eyebrow. "It doesn't sound like an easy way to grow up. But it seems you've turned out pretty well."

She has no doubt in her mind that his life is far more dangerous than hers. She doesn't count that incident with Cthulu since that had just been so far out of the ordinary for her. "Okay. I wasn't going to ask you. I wanted you to tell me ion your own terms. But.... When you left me that voice mail, you called yourself Robert. Now. I can't exactly throw stones since my name isn't-- Normal. But what do you want me to call you, Jake?"

When she tells him that he called himself Robert, Mr. Queen considers his next words carefully. He can tell her that Robert is an alias he was using. He can tell her that he was so delirious, he didn't know his own name at the time.

But faced with the prospect of lying to Jane, whom he is starting to care about, and telling her the truth, Robert makes his decision and hopes she'll forgive him.

"Jacob King is an alias. A taunt to keep my enemies off-balance. I call myself Merlyn when I'm at work. But my real name is Robert Queen." he tells her.

"And before you ask, yes, as in Oliver Queen. He abandoned me years ago; I hear it's a practice of his, though he'll gladly take in strangers and give them everything." Robert tells her.

She can lie-detect fairly well. She would know about a lie like that. She wouldn't call him on it. She would have lost faith in him though.

"Given your dislike for Queen Industries it does make sense," Jane says with that air of being a detective. She knows there are things Robert doesn't know though. After all she is friends with Mia and knows about all of that.

She decides that even though she cares bout Robert she will keep much of that to herself. If he is to learn anything it should be on his own otherwise will he believe anything?

"I lived in Star City for most of what I know. Can't say much on Queen you probably already know. I'm not going to say anything. I don't think I should anyways."

"I've known he was my father my whole life. When I could watch a T.V. I would watch news stations for any information on him, because it was the closest I could get to him. Often times, I learned about his alcoholism, his womanizing, his general disrespect for people." Robert tells her.

"He's the epitome of the ugly American. As long as he has his fancy suits and limos and luxuries, he doesn't care about the plight of the people below him that he uses. Sure, he gives money to charities, but he..." Robert sighs as a lance of pain shoots through his stomach.

"Do you believe that I'm petty for my hatred of my father?" he asks. "I would like it if you told me what you truly think, Jane. I...value your opinion, no matter what it is." he says.

She listens thoughtfully. She knows that he is telling her the truth. At least the truth that he knows. She knows he doesn't know everything about his Father.

Or maybe he does? She can't know for certain and it isn't her job to defend Oliver Queen to his son.

"I think you don't know everything about him. No one ever truly knows everything about someone. And it's not my job to defend Oliver Queen. Hell, I've seen the results of people who are like you say Oliver Queen is. They're not good people. And.... Are you even certain he knows about you? I find it hard to swallow that someone who has looked after kids who aren't his wouldn't even try to get to know his own son. It doesn't fit. I mean unless he and your mother had a falling out of some kind."

She has no idea really.

"My parents worked together for a time, then they were adversaries, like most parents." Robert says.

"My...conception might have been an issue between them, but that doesn't excuse him. I had no part in how I was conceived, Jane. Why was I not worth when /several/ others were?" he asks.

Robert takes a deep breath, trying to calm himself.

"I'm sorry. This isn't your issue; it's mine. I suppose that I need more information on him, before I decide to execute the rest of my plan." he tells her.

She nodded.

"If I knew where I came from....I suppose I might feel the same way." It has started to matter less and less to Jane though lately. She smiles at him though. The first actual one that was full of honesty the others before had been more restrained.

"Please do. You might find out more about where you came from that way. And would that be such a bad thing?"

Despite his anger, Robert smiles back at Jane.

"I have no money to pay you with, but...if you have information regarding Oliver Queen and his family, I will find a way to trade you for it." he says.

Jane finds it hard not to blush. She has no idea what he would trade. Then she starts to get it.

"I can help you get in touch with one of his former charges. If you....give me your word to stay calm. I don't have a whole lot of people I can honestly say I'm friends with."

That would explain a hell of a lot.

Robert thinks about it a moment. He doesn't want to ruin anything for Jane, but he needs the information. He takes a deep breath.

"Well, I'm not in the right condition to meet someone just now, but I accept your offer. I'd also like it if we can have dinner. I..really missed your cooking." he says.

"I can do that," she mutters softly. Then fidgets slightly. "Soup though. For you. Solid food might not be such a good idea while you're fighting an infection. I make a very awesome soup."

"Maybe I could get a shower in, too?" he asks softly.

"If you're not busy, we could save water and...you know." he says.

"Then, I'll try the soup."

She tries not to chuckle. "You do realize that's one way to not save water?"

Oh now she's actually blushing. She is giving that some serious thought. He should be recovering, not doing anything to strain himself.

"Don't strain yourself. I'd feel bad if you agitated your injury," Jane says firmly.

Robert takes her hand and draws it her fingers to his lips.

"Compared to the water we'd use showering separately, I think we'd save. I hear there are studies." he grins.

"And I promise that I won't hurt myself. I'll let you know at the first sign of discomfort, Jane." he says, kissing each of her fingers.

She raises an eyebrow but is obviously quite amused by him. Otherwise he wouldn't have her hand still. "Well, Mr King."

Calling him Mr Queen would just be weird. "Let's go test that theory then."

She will help him up since she is certain he still needs it to at least stand.
