"In case you haven't noticed, Jane, I'm a little bad about letting people take care of me, most of the time. I...was raised to be self-sufficient, to be able to survive on famine because there was no clue when one would feast again." he tells her.
"My mother was a very hard woman and father abandoned me, as I'm sure we talked about, but I was also always taught to repay kindness with kindness." he says.
"You probably have questions as to how I came to be this way." Robert says, knowing that Jane is an inquisitive person by nature and profession. Besides, if he didn't give her at least that much, he'd be putting her at risk in case that psycho woman tracked him back here. Putting Jane at risk is the last thing he wants to do.
"Ask me what you need to ask me, and I'll answer you as best I can." he says.
