Some days you feel like a bum.... (Open to JSA, Post-Thangarian Invasion)
Mark was frankly surprised. He hadn't even realized he hadn't taken care of the paperwork for the lease on his apartment. So with what little dignity he had he found himself staying at the brownstone.

It hadn't actually mattered. Since he was one of the older members of thew new JSA it actually made sense to stay around. Of course he still was deeply embarrassed he was currently homeless. He tried to not let anyone know about that. He was away early every morning for work and tried to stay out of everyone's way.

Then he had another patch of bad luck. The budget was getting cut. The library he worked at couldn't afford to keep him around. It sucked.

So instead of being perfectly reasonable about the bad luck he did NOT want to talk about he was drinking beer and eating dry cheerios.

Obviously he wasn't in a good mood. And he was going to have to learn to talk to someone on the team.

"...Yeah, I'm at the brownstone now. What...no. I already did...What? Mom, I need to help out here. I mean, I'm the 'Big guy' here...Oh, MOM! I know that my shoulder is still tender!@ its my shoulder!"

Will walked aimlessly, trying in vain to get his mother to listen to him.

Mark looks up. He isn't even buzzed. The beer is mostly to sooth his hurt feelings over the loss of his job and a place to call his own. He tilts his head.

"Will. I can speak with your Mother if you'd like," he offers noting that he has pretty much become the 'team adviser'. A role he doesn't at all mind.

Will looks at Mark, kind of surprised. He rarely saw Dr. Fate without the helmet.

It was kind of unnerving to see that this man, with power enough to shape the cosmos, was just a normal man.

"Uh...hey mom? Mr. Clearwater wants to talk to you...It's Doctor Fae, mom."

Will tentatively hands the phone over.

A normal man who drinks beer with his Cheerios apparently. It was rare to see the hook nosed man around here while not in his Dr Fate garb.

"Hello madam. It sounds as if you have some concerns regarding your son Will? I'd be happy to discuss them with you," he says in a slow pleasant tone. He's not bad at all when it comes to talking.

"Thank you for your concern, but I'm actually just fussing." Mary Freeman says over the phone quietly.

"I know he'll be okay. His uncle told me he should only be sore."

"Really?" He is surprised. People Mothering their children just doesn't quite occur to him. He feels like he shouldn't be.

"Ah. Well. There goes my whole speech on the way Nth metal disrupts magic and that I'll be sure to keep an eye on him," he rubs the back of his head feeling like a bit of a dork.

"I've fought against Nth metal before. I used to be a Marvel myself, before I got pregnant. I know what it can do. It gave my husband a real shiner." The voice on the other line says.

"I wish I could have been more for him when he was young." The voice becomes solemn.

He blinks again. He hadn't made the connection. A whisper in the back of his mind hints he should have. There is a connection there.

"Terribly sorry. I didn't realize. I'm still new to all of this." He wonders what she meant there.

"Madam. Trust me when I say this, it matters that you're here now. A boy never stops needing his parents especially when he is starting to become a young man."

"Thank you for that. It's refreshing to know you care so much about the younger members. The Society members helped me out, too. Not many help out a sixteen year-old girl with her pregnancy," Mary says on the other side.

He felt sober suddenly. He hadn't even been drinking really. But these kids needed him as much as he sort of needed them to start feeling sane and connected to the world.

When the hell had that happened?

"Well. I don't have much in the way of family." There is a long awkward silence from him. He never admitted that to people. "I like to think by looking out for the team as a whole it's.... Filling a gap in my life. As Doctor Fate I need to find ways to ground myself. I think if it weren't for them the world would have a very different Doctor Fate."

"I appreciate that...I don't believe Willie has told us your first name, so Mister Clearwater," Mary said.

"The Doctor Fate I knew said the same thing. And I have very good memories of Kent Nelson. I appreciate all your doing for my son, and I know the other parents of these children do as well."

He finds himself amused. "It's Mark. I've gotten used to being Mister Clearwater to the kids."

Because all except Rex count as kids in his mind. And by something he doesn't have a name for he won't let them down.

"Mr Nelson was right. No man is an island as the saying goes."

"Mark, then," Mary's warm voice says from the other side. "Well, if ever you're in Fawcett, you're always welcome in the Freeman house. I'll make sure Freddy knows, too."

"I may be able to talk with the other parents, maybe get a little get together going. The Justice Society is a family, so getting to know everyone is important!"

"Uh...buh..."

Um. He wasn't ready to meet everyone! "I'm not sure if I'm ready for that. I'm not used to being apart of well, anything."

He gives Will a slightly panicked look. His Mother is getting ideas.

"What happened? Is mom getting ideas?"

Will knows his mothers ideas. They always involve a ton of people, and a lot of them he doesn't know.

He nods then quickly scribbles down a note with a handy little pad of paper and pen he keeps in his pocket.

Party? Possibly. Thinks I need to meet the others.

Could end badly. Not used to family.
He holds it up so Will can see. Poor Mark is like a mouse caught in a trap.

"Phone here! Phone here!" Will blurts as he grabs the phone from Mark.

"Mom? Are you really...NO! Mom, he just joined! Let him get used to...Oh no, Mom! Wait!'

Will held the phone some distance away from his ear, and the excitable chatter of Mary Freeman was audible, although muddied, in the empty room.

If Mark was less of a man he might whimper. Instead he just stares at Will and the phone.

Right. This is a mad house. He moves and chugs at his beer to try and regain some sanity. When he stops and realizes that won't work he just kind of sighs.

Will's Mother is very nice and VERY scary.

"So sorry," Will mouths to Mark as the voice quiets down.

"Mom, you're doing it again. You nee-What? Okay. Give him a few ....I dunno, months...Yes, Months, mom. He has more power than Uncle Billy, and he has to deal with us."

Will sighs slightly after a second.

"THANK you, Mom."

"Five months," Will mouths to Mark.

"I'm doomed," Mark mumbles. Five months from now would be around Christmas.

There is no way anyone could wait that long if they were THAT excitable. A JSA Christmas.

They'll eat him alive. He hasn't spent any holiday with company if close to nine years.

"His Mother decided I need to meet everyone. Everyone connected to the JSA. He got her to hold off for five months because I'm new," he explains very slowly.

"Christmas is in five months, Nic," he adds the last part very dryly. "Everyone will be there. And I bet from how Will reacted she will insist on introducing me to everyone. I.... I haven't actually pent Christmas for Thanksgiving with anyone for nine years. I'm not prepared to be tossed to the wolves."

They are not wolves Mark. Calm down.

"If you pee on me..... I will drop you in Lake Erie," Mark says in a very calm tone. Right it is best to be reasonable.

"Approach it with caution. Soccer Moms shop there and they are scary. Run if you see groups of five or more of them. They may bite," he says in a slow steady tone. He might be kidding.

"I could get shoes. Need a new pair sort of. The ones I have are uh.... About to fall apart." He wiggles one foot and yes they do look kind of bad.

Nic just looked at Mark, her eyes growing wider and more round, then filling with tears, then the lower lip sticking out into a lethally perfect pout, complete with the Hurt Feelings expression.

"I don't claim everyone. Is special." She sighs, wings drooping. "Yeah. Everyone's gotta keep an eye on Nic. She'll just get kidnapped again or worse. I'll go get my tracking device and wallet. Not sure where Rex put the chains."

"I'm sorry Nic. I'm...." He should go for the truth. "While I understand how other people feel, I'm not used to people trying to include me. Ans I don't think you'll get eaten alive or anything. I think it's the other way around."

He smirks trying to sound like he's being nice. "I bet you'd eat a whole gaggle of jocks alive. And laugh about it too. You seem to be a.... Very cheerful sort. Not like me. I'm boring."

We have a one misunderstood and/or angst-ridden person rule and I get dibs for the time being on account of smelly Thanagarians and my inability to get a date that isn't trying to get into Mickey's pants via me."

Will was getting sick of the girl who obviously had a better social life and chance at dating than he did mope like this.

"You're worried on not getting a date? You're Hawk-frikkin'-girl. I'm lucky if a girl looks twice at me, and I can guarantee you there are plenty-o-droolers for you. You have good friends and a lot going for you in every department, so you really need to stop this."
