Lighting the Beacon

Maxine had asked Terry if he could take her to Mr. Wayne because there was something she wanted to talk to him about. She knew how to get to Wayne manor and even how to get into the bat cave but Terry and Bruce weren’t comfortable with her heading up there herself. She knew It was a secret identity thing so she didn’t complain and with what she wanted to talk to both Bruce and Terry about she want to be on very good terms with both of them. Maxine wanted to take a more active role in the whole superhero thing. Last time she had tried that with Bruce he had gotten her arrested and Terry never seem comfortable when in the past she had forced her way into helping him, but they had all come a long way since then.

Terry had been a bit surprised when Maxine came to him, saying that she had to talk to him and Bruce about something important. He was even more taken aback when she said that she needed to talk to them in the cave. Terry had imediately called Bruce, knowing that Maxine wouldn't joke around about something being serious. Bruce was serious, but eventually agreed for Terry to bring Max over to the cave and Terry went straight to pick her up.

He wasn't in uniform as he entered the manor with Maxine at his side, but his expression was still serious all the same.

Bruce wasn't in the manor itself. He sat in his chair in the Bat Cave, looking over some information he'd gathered about Terry's recent encounters with villains. He's also been gathering information on the Young Justice League of America. When Maxine and Terry arrived, Bruce beckoned them on the intercom, "Get down here, now."

He didn't like Maxine all that much, but Terry was insistent on her coming around. He gave a wild guess as to the reason while scratching between Ace's ears.

After walking with Terry downstairs Maxine made her most serious face and took a breath. Maxine wasn’t going to mince words and just said it, “I want to take a more active role in things and not just be sidelined all the time.” It might not be the most tactful way of handling this but she hoped they would both appreciate her boldness.

Terry raised an eyebrow. Damn, that was fast. "What you want to be Batgirl or something?" He already had to responsible for Marissa. Maxine was his best friend, but he didn't think that he wanted another person that he had to worry about out on the field.

"No," Bruce replied sternly.

“No I don’t want to be Batgirl,” Maxine said, “I know I’m not a good enough fighter for that, but I know I can be a great help for this operation you have going on.” Admitting that was hard for her but she knew it was true.

“Mr. Wayne you know I’m a great detective and awesome with computer,” Maxine said holding her ground hoping maybe a logical appeal would work, “Having someone else to help with the research and on the fly detective work couldn’t hurt.”

"You don't have what it takes to be in this line of work."

“And what exactly do I not have that you think I need?”

"You're a liability, and we can't protect you all the time. What do you think you could do if somebody found you out? Terry can't protect you all the time."

“I just want to help Terry and I thought this would be the best way to do that. If you are willing to then I guess I’ll just have to do it by myself,” Maxine said resigning herself to that Bruce wasn’t going to help her.

Bruce sighed and rubbed his face. There was no way he was going to allow her to run around and try to help Terry on her own. He objected to her butting into his territory and he objected to her getting herself into danger. No matter the intelligence, villains were carnivorous. And fresh meat was the most appetizing.

"Be here tomorrow night at nine o'clock," he said while turning away and looking at his computer. She had better realize how much weight she was being given. "There are people and places you need to learn."

Maxine was shocked that Bruce had agreed to train her. She had already resigned herself to that Bruce wasn’t going to train her. “Thank you, I promise you that I won’t let you down. I’ll do whatever I can to make this worth your while.”
