Help a Gal Out?
Avia was currently booked on a fairly length stay in Vegas (easy commute when you had a Mother Box), but was making regular trips back to Chicago to see Will. It was nice to have someone to come home too. Different than the way she used to fill her bed with an endless stream of partners. She'd tried loving everyone, but now she just wanted to love one man. Funny how life changed sometimes.

The Vegas shows were going well, but she was always creating new tricks. And right now, she had a pretty good budget to come up with a few more. She was no slouch in the technology department, but sometimes, there were engineering tricks she could use some help with.

So she Boomed herself to San Fran to go see Max.

"My advice there is to check each wire. One of them may be on its last leg," Max explained. "If left alone it could cause a serious problem if you're still restrained."

"Hey, there ain't nothin' I can't get..." Avia dropped the bravado. "Thanks," she said instead.

Max looked like he was going to say something, but chose not to.

"I'm not talking about being trapped. I'm talking about an backlash of electrical current. Is this device insulated for that?"

"Yeah," Avia agreed. She pointed. "Here and here. New Genesis power-circuits. Supposed to stop that kind of thing."

She squinted at the drawings. "Maybe I missed something when I was putting it together?"

"Is all the material used for this New Genesis tech? Any earth-based equipment added in here? There could be a bit of incompatibility," Max guessed.

"It's a mix," Avia said. "Earth-tech supplemented by New Genesis tech for the complicated bits."

She nodded. "Could be. Not usually a problem, but you never know."

"I'd take a closer look into the inner workings," Max recommended. "I mean Earth and New Genesis have very different levels of tech, there's bound to be some kind of operating conflict."

"Good idea," she agreed.

She laughed a little. "Even when the show went really pro, Dad and Uncle Obie and I never really moved beyond the old days. Strung together technology, pieced together as best they could, with little more than a Mother Box and prayer."

"I get why your dad made a living out of it, but why did you become an escape artist?"

"Good question," she agreed.

"I was never going to be a warrior like Mom. I was always Daddy's girl. But really... it's about the symbolism. Every trap, every prison we put ourselves in, there's a way out of it, a solution, a means to escape the bonds we put around ourselves. And it's about spreading that message. The escape artistry is fun, don't get me wrong, but it's as much a vehicle for some of the charities I'm involved with as anything else."

Max listened to what she said and paused before speaking "So..you're doing it as an act of symbolism while doing charities?"

That got a giggle. "I appreciate that."

"And what about you?" she asked. "Don't get me wrong, you're one hip scientist, but the save the world thing... it don't exactly seem like it'd fit with you."

"I've heard myself described in a lot of ways, but hip is a new one on me." He thinks on her question. "You're right, it doesn't," he admitted. "I had a lousy childhood, a deadbeat dad, people judging me because of who my grandfather was, growing up at a school with some of the most self-entitled and self-adsorbed jackasses, took my share of beatings, and even had school faculty trying to sabotage me. By all accounts I was likely on the road to following grandpa's footsteps. Except something happened the day of my graduation."

"As I was standing up there, my so-called peers standing next to me, biased teachers sitting in front of me, the only thing that kept me from thoughts of bitterly lashing out against them all was my mother sitting in the third row. Still," he admitted. "Those thoughts kept creeping up. You know the kind that fester until you almost stop differentiating between one person and another? Then I saw this man in the back I had never seen before that day. I looked over at him a few times, and that's when I realized that he was wearing a sophisticated disguise."

"I waited until after the ceremony was over and went after the disguised man. I caught up with him outside and he revealed he was my grandfather in disguise," Max revealed. "Turns out he had escaped prison in order to be there for my graduation, but that's not what changed my mind. He looked me in the eye and told me 'walk a different path than I did.' Then he told me to give mom his best and then he ran off."

Avia's eyes widened a little. "Will's talked about your grandfather before. Says he used to call himself "the World's Most Sinister Scientist." I wouldn't have thought he'd give that kind of advice."

"Mom said that maybe he was starting to think about his life in his twilight years and didn't want that legacy passed on or something to that effect. I didn't up and forgive all the crap i went through, but if grandad was willing to break out of prison to tell me that, then I at least owed it to him to listen," Max stated.
