Not A Goodbye.
The Queen Industries building in midtown Gotham explodes as he looks on, and Robert Queen calls this a job well done. He planned the attack for after-hours, when the least amount of people were there. He'd counted two guards and someone working late in an office, all of which were disabled and removed from the building before its destruction.

Innocents didn't deserve to die for Oliver Queen's sins, though the resulting joblessness would be an issue until the place was rebuilt.

He went home, showered, and used his new cell phone to call his only friend in Gotham (in fact, his only friend ever thus far) and tell her that he was leaving. His plane left early in the morning, and it was on to St. Roch to continue the pattern. His mission is clear, to him, but Gotham was good to him for what it was worth.

He picks up the phone and calls Jane, hoping she's up working on a case. If nothing else, the explosion probably woke everyone in town.

"Hey Jane....it's me." he says.

Actually she had been cleaning the building she owned now. So much stuff had to be gone through before she left to go back to Star City. She still didn't know what she was going to do with this place but it felt like home to her. Something about the building spoke of a possible future.

She never thought she would have something to really look forward to.

Speaking of. She has no idea what to feel about it but she was grinning when she answered her phone. "Hi Jake."

He's smiling, too, though she can't see it. It's just this effect her voice has on him.

"I'm going to be leaving later tonight, but I was wondering if you wouldn't mind me coming to say good-bye in person. I figure I can see you, then catch a cab to the airport and make my flight on time.

What do you say?" he asks.

She is trying to not have any girlish moments. It's nice that he wants to come see her before he leaves. She has no idea what the future has in store for her or for him so she thinks saying goodbye is smart.

"Sure. I can start cooking something for us to chow down on," she offers knowing it's been hours since she last took a break. She has been busy all day.

"My stomach is rumbling already. I can't wait to see you, beautiful." Jake says, ending the call.

For a moment, Robert considers telling her his real name. If she could accept who he was, maybe there was a chance at something more between them.

He decides against it, though. There would be too much to explain and eventually, she will not understand. He leaves his room, and heads over to her place, just looking forward to seeing her again before he leaves.

She would have explained more to him about herself. The past that can't be easily explained. But it doesn't happen. She liked him but that was as far as she was going to let it go. Even though she was up in the apartment within a minute of the call ending.

She digs through what she has and starts washing her hands off before she starts chopping things up and heats up a pan. She knew it was going to be mostly vegetables but it would end up being pretty healthy which for her is unusual since she doesn't do healthy when it comes to food.

Still it will shape up to be a decent meal.

Twenty minutes or so later, there's a knock on her door. If she opens it, she finds Jake standing there with flowers.

"Permission to come into your home?" he asks, a play on the first words he ever said to her, little over a week ago.

She has a towel thrown over one shoulder. She had been using it as an oven mit. The smell of cooking vegetables and chicken follows her out to the door way she she blinks owlishly at him.

She hadn't expected flowers. She can't exactly say anything about it though. She flashes him a grin though.

"Permission granted."

He steps inside, and the smell of the chicken and vegetables makes his stomach rumble a little. He's spent most of his time practicing his shots, and he often forgets to eat when he's in the zone.

"The food smells great. You look great, too. There something I meant to tell you, actually, so it's best you hear it now.

Kestrel wasn't charged with anything. He's still out there, Jane. Has he tried to contact you at all?" Jake asks.

Jane doesn't forget about food. She has pretty much always liked eating so forgetting that she's hungry doesn't happen.

"Wait. What? How the hell did get get off," Jane nearly demands. She is pissed about that. Someone like Kestrel needs to pay for his crimes.

"No. He hasn't. Chances are he won't get a hold of me anyways. After I finish squaring things away here I need to go back to Star City to start getting stuff closed up. I'm planning on coming back here for good."

"Apparently, all the evidence in the world is nothing if you've got a high priced lawyer. I heard he's claiming that he was attacked by someone from the Arrow Family, and that they maimed hm while he was on his way to an art gallery opening." Jake says, rolling his eyes.

"He's still got a nasty scar, but there's no mention of a perky blond beating the crap out of him. I don't think he wants anyone to know you took him down." he says, shrugging his shoulders.

"Hey, that's good. You've got this big building here in Gotham, and garbage like Kestrel needs to be dealt with. Still, I think you should invest in some back up, otherwise he'll be sending people with guns after you again."

"Great," she says in a sarcastic tone. "And seriously? Who the hell is going to believe that?"

She almost smiles though at hearing that Kestrel has a scar. "Let's hope he doesn't mention it. I don't need that kind of attention."

She nods slowly. "Yeah. I have an idea on how to handle that. Just need to figure out if it will work."

That means talking to Mia. "Make yourself comfortable. I gotta finish cooking."

Jane gives him a small smile before going back into the kitchen.

"Money talks in these parts, Jane. He's got the cash to make his story believable right now." Jake says.

He smiles back and takes a seat in the living room, relaxing on the couch. The food smells really good, but he takes some time to run over the plan in his head. His flight leaves late tonight, and he'll likely hit El Paso next, as Queen Industries has huge warehouse there. From there, onto Coast City again, then to Star City, finally.

He has no idea what he'll do in Star City right now, but he figures he'll have a plan when he gets there.

That had her just grunt. It sounded like she was annoyed.

Jane putters around the kitchen. She wants to make sure everything is fine and nothing burns. It is possible to burn pasta after all.

"It'll be just a few more minutes," she calls from the kitchen. It shouldn't take too long.

"Take your time, Jane." he says, going to take a look out of one of the windows and make sure everything was okay on the street.

He didn't see anything amiss, so he sat down again and picked up the first piece of reading material he could find.

Things appear fine outside.

He has a few things to select from. Books with word games in them. A book on modern criminology is mixed in there. There isn't too much that seems to be just for pleasure. Jane isn't in Gotham for fun.

It takes her a few more minutes. The sound of clattering metal and Jane curing like a sailor cn be heard. The kitchen goes silent for a moment. "I'm okay!"

There is some more cursing. "No really!"

That doesn't sound encouraging. He doesn't want to try to swoop in and "save" her, but he doesn't want her getting hurt on his behalf, either.

"Only if you're certain, gorgeous!" he says, picking up the book on criminology. It looks interesting, so he takes a read, but keeps an eye on the kitchen as well.

She would actually push him back out of the kitchen if that happened. She thinks everything is fine.

"I'm certain," she calls. She's setting up plates now that the small disaster of knocking hot water onto the floor is over. She had it cleaned up.

"It's just about ready. I can't really think of anything that's missing."

"You and your excellent conversation." he smiles, reading the criminology book with fascination. In another time and place, he might have been a detective of some kind, maybe. Now, though...he usually made crimes for detectives like Jane to solve.

And someday Jane might figure that out. She's pretty clueless right now. She hadn't heard about the explosion yet since she has no TV.

She snaps her fingers. "Gosh. I knew I forgot something."

"That's true. I did hear that they'll be working on security though," Jane says with a happy nod. "I think they'd hate to pay my hazard fee again."

She pauses as she dishes out their dinner then shrugs. "No school. I was never comfortable around lots of people. He taught me everything he knew. I study the rest on my own. I just took the classes I needed to get my lisences."

"That's a tough one." She finishes dishing out their food.

"I would say tracking down leads. It's always very hit or miss. And usually you get lots of misses before you score a solid lead."
