So Always Have Faith in Me (Bendytimed)
When it was all over, some of the others had been a bit... dismissive. In the best possible sense. Like none of it mattered, since there was a bizarre magical anomaly. But Ruth couldn't think that. She couldn't pretend it hadn't been her. She'd been in there. Her words hadn't been made up of whole cloth by ... whatever that effect was. She couldn't disassociate from it.

All she could say was, "I'm so sorry."

He'd like to tell her not to worry about it. And as far as Jay is concerned, its the right answer. But he knows, when she takes this tone, that she's going to worry about it til they've talked. Besides, its probably for the best - Ruth is usually right.

"I'm sorry too. About everything. But... I have an idea."

Ruth cants her head a little. "What idea?"

"Something you once told me when I was complaining about English class. How I couldn't figure out why we needed to spend so much time at it when I already spoke English, and you told me that its easy to speak English, it takes work to communicate in it, and they're totally different things.

Watching football is easy. It just looks like throw the ball, catch the ball. Since you're not in the locker room, or the training room... it makes sense that blitz reads, pre-snap reads, audible adjustments, blocking adjustments and call outs, playbook memorization, timing patterns... wouldn't make sense. What if... we did this together? I can show you what I'm looking at when I watch the game tape, what I'm trying to learn... and you can help me?"

She listens. "I ... definitely see where you're getting at. And I want to be clear that just because I got all ... bitchy... doesn't mean you have to take extra time explaining yourself to me." She wants to be clear, wants to be fair. There's no question who was lashing out more here, and she doesn't want to keep up some precedent that she should just be catered to because of an emotionally unstable moment. "But... that could be nice. Thank you."

"Ruth... I love you. And nothing is more important to me than that. You've helped me with so much... and maybe you can help me with this too." He pauses a few moments to go get his playbook. All 94 pages of it.
"This is my textbook. I need to know all of this, plus the things on the field I'm going to show you. I'm... sorry I hadn't included you before now. I didn't think you'd be interested."

"I love you, too." She takes a look at the book. "That's not your fault. In high school, I only needed to know the basics so I could watch and know you were doing well in a useful and productive hobby. If I haven't made the adjustment well to its being such a part of your life -- and it's probably going to stay that way when you're a teacher -- well, yeah, let's fix that now."

"In high school, the playbook was about..." pause to select out eight pages... "This long. And there was usually limited blitzing. Its gotten a lot more complicated, and while I'm doing ok with it... I admit, I'm struggling in parts. Maybe you can help."

And there's a much more Ruth smile now. "Maybe. I'll certainly try."

He nods. "Ok, so let's spend some time with this. You learn fast... I'll give you some basics on what all this means, so you have some context, then show you what I'm trying to find in the film. Even if you can't help, it'll be one more thing we can do together. I'm sorry for leaving you out. Especially when I was having trouble."

"It's okay, and.. that sounds perfect." She kisses his cheek and heads to the couch with him and the playbook.

He turns a bit, so he can kiss her properly, then settles in. He spends a while just teaching her what the X's and O's mean, and then sets into the things he's responsible for. As well as some demonstration why so many scholarships go into athletics - between practice, the weight room, play books and film study, its a 6 to 8 hour a day commitment, almost a full time job to have any hope of starting.

He won't likely be able to get to everything, but its something he cares about, and something he can do with Ruth, instead of trying to fit it in around her schedule plus school.

And she'll listen, and sort it all out in her head, and just be glad to be staying close and talking as they discuss it.

He's quite happy to be close. And he has to admit, its oddly kind of nice to be teaching Ruth, and helping her with something he knows better than she does for once. The last thing its doing is going to his head, but putting what happened behind them is, oddly, that much easier relating to her like this instead of trying to mesh the Ruth he fought with with the girl he usually puts on a pedestal.

He's patient with all of this. There's a lot to learn, and he's had a whole season to pick it up - and so far, he's just glad she actually seems to be not minding relating over this. He really wasn't sure... and now kind of wishes he'd asked her sooner.

Well, this Ruth has at least one thing in common with standard pedastel-having Ruth; she's doing her best. Still, it's certainly a change of pace, and does kind of help in readjusting after everything.

Eventually, after a pause. "...the education major's a good choice, you know."

He's a bit surprised by the shift in topic, but looks at her sincerely. "You think so? I was... kind of thinking maybe I'd like coaching."

Ruth doesn't see it as a shift in subject. "Yeah," she says, smiling. "You will. You'll be good at it, too."

"You think so?" he replies, still having a little trouble believing it - but not doubting her either. "Because... well, there's a couple classes offered through the P.E. department. And if I stick with the program and keep grades, I could probably get references."

"Yes. This conversation is coaching in terms of the broad general principle, isn't it? And you're doing wonderfully. And that... soundsl ike a plan."

"Well, sure... but you know me. And you're really easy to teach. You always figure things out so fast. But... if you really think so. Maybe I can ask the QBs coach when we go in for our post-season meetings when school starts back up."

A pause. "Speaking of which, while I have my off-season workout schedule to work in still, plus a weekly meeting with the coach, and weight room time... we should still have some more time now that the season is over."

"I really do think so. And see, at some point, we'll get far enough in all this that I might actually understand how an exclusively quarterbacking coach can function." She smiled.

"And good. More time for, among other things, homework devoid of Os."
