Mistaken Identity
It happens to Mark every night. He just doesn't know it yet. He falls into a trance after he is done reading a chapter of a room. He gets up and walks to the shelf at the far side of his study and picks up the Helmet of Nabu.

Then he was no longer Mark Clearwater he was Dr Fate. He had a task to go attend to. He had felt the disturbance earlier this week but hadn't had time to take care of it.

Within minutes he was flying over a city in Louisiana that might be familiar to a certain family. Dr Fate make his rounds over the city finding magical traces all over the place. He puzzles over it as he hovers over a local restaurant several dozen feet in the air. While he is Doctor Fate he is still limited in some ways because his mind has not accepted this path yet so figuring out exactly what is going on is going to take some work for him.

	Instead of the person responsible for attacking the Gargoyles charge down from the roof tops and the sky. They attack Rex and Doctor Fate. They seem to be protecting someone who is in the middle of the court yard sitting on a bench. Whoever it is. They're balling their eyes out. 	Doctor Fate begins to fire off spells. Three of the Gargoyles get teleported away from where they are. Others have bolts of burning light sent at them. He is focused on making sure that Rex does not get attacked. "Go! Speak to that person. Try to get them to call this off." Maybe they'll see reason. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Rex smashes a Gargoyle that started to get too close, looking at Fate as if he's grown a second head.

"Do I look like Winston Churchill to you?" he says.

Then grunts and flies off toward the person in the courtyard on the bench. He tries to look as non-threatening as possible, though that's hard, given that he looks like an angel of war or something.

"Hey, look. You're hurting a lot people with these gargoyles and it's wrong. You need to do the right thing and call them off." Warhawk says.

	The Gargoyles are focusing on Doctor Fate right now. Fire and getting sent away is not in fact fun. The woman sniffles. "But.... But they need to pay. Someone needs to. It isn't fair!" She gives Rex a sad but still angry look. "They killed them! The police won't do anything? What am I supposed to do? Let their deaths mean nothing? I can't.... I can't do that!" 	"Okay...let's start at the beginning. Who killed who and what does that have to do with the gargoyles? The more you tell me, the more we might be able to help you." Warhawk says. 	She sniffles. "My husband and daughter were murdered. The police can't find any leads. It was a mugging.... so I.... I decided that everyone had to stop." She pulls out a small amulet. "I can sop this." She drops it to the ground and smashes it with her heel. The Gargoyles disappear. They will be back where they belong. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

	Doctor Fate approaches once the gargoyles are gone. He approaches Rex and the woman. He is watching her carefully then produces a handkerchief from his uniform and offers it to her. He may be cold acting but that does not mean he is without compassion for others who are in pain. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Wow. Rex is floored. How could he have missed helping this woman?

"I'm sorry, ma'am, for your loss. I know what it's like to lose a family member. Is there anything more you can tell us that might help.

I'll look into this personally, if you can just make the gargoyles stop attacking. They just need to go back where they came from, and we'll do everything we can to find out who did this to you." he says.

"The men. The men who killed them were part of one of the gangs I think." Because no matter how hard people try there will always be gangs. "I was told it looked like that my family died because of some kind of gang hazing thing."

She sniffs again while she works to undo the spell. "It was my daughter's sixteenth birthday. I was supposed to meet them but I was running late... It was just outside that new place? Magnolia's. Rita wanted to try it out. I just miss them so much."

She looks very tired and worn out.

"We will find them, madam," Doctor Fate says slowly. "There are methods we can use that the police can't. These men will be brought to justice and balance will be restored."

It is always about balance. Deaths must always have consequences for the people that cause them and it will keep this woman from using magic to exact justice again.

"Their fates are sealed. You do not have to worry."

	Rex nods in agreement. "What he said, ma'am. Now, you need to hand over that amulet to my friend here, so that he can make sure no one else is hurt by accident and has to go through what you've gone through." he says, reaching out to touch her hand very gently with his own gloved one. 	The amulet gets turned over to Doctor Fate. "I.... I think I'm going to go now," the grief stricken woman tells them before she wobbles in the direction of her car. She seems calmer though. The knowledge her family's death will be avenged is a cold comfort to her. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Doctor Fate watches her go. Then he uses the amulet to turn the gargoyles back into statues and sends them back to where they should be.

"If the current bearer of the Helmet was aware of this... I think he would feel quite sad for that woman. No one deserves that kind of pain," Doctor Fate says softly. "Now let us finish this business. I only need to go to where they were killed."

"All right. You got some fancy spell that's gonna show us where the bad guys are? Because I haven't made anyone bleed tonight, and murderers are just the kind of people that deserve a fate like that." he says.

"By the way...that whole attacking me thing from earlier? We're cool. And...I might have jumped to the wrong conclusion in trying to cave your skull in." Rex says. He's not good with apologies, that much is obvious.

"So yeah, let's fly." he says, lifting away into the night.

"It is all right. I too apologize for assuming you were the one who was doing the killing. I assumed too much without enough information. It had been too long since the world has had a Doctor Fate. The world has changed," he says simply.

"And yes. If you would lead the way? We need to be at that restaurant," Fate requests as he rises up in the air to follow his 'partner'.

	Rex leads them to the restaurant by the most direct route and they perch on a rooftop across the street from the place. "There it is. Go ahead and work your mojo. I'll keep an eye out for gang-bangers...wait. That car down the block, the Chevy Impala. Rollin' 60's favor those cars." he says. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

His head tilts.

"I see. It could be that they were involved. Keep an eye on the car."

He begins to pull his magic together and for a moment the area around a patch of blood stained cement glows. It takes a moment but Warhawk and Doctor Fate get to see the murders happen again. Fate does not seem to be affected by it but it is because he focuses on the men doing the killing.

Rex would know that they're from the Rollin' 60s.

	Rex does, indeed, realize the vehicle is from the Rollin' 60's. The longer he watches the car, the more he recognizes who it belongs to. "Yeah, that's Frankie Wapps' car. He's one of the leaders of the gang and he's been in an out of prison on assault and attempted murder charges. But witnesses either disappear or get too scared to testify." Warkhawk says. 	"Hmm. There was a witness this time though. Is there any way we can talk them into testifying? If we offer to protect them from the gang that would help." By them Doctor Fate mostly means Rex. While he is willing to help he finds himself unwilling to disrupt Mark's civilian life too much before he is ready to find out what is going on. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"You don't quite get it, man. People are terrified of these guys, more so than us. And they've done this to hundreds of people, a few that were even in protective custody." Rex says, thinking it over.

"We could offer, but most people don't see our kind as caring about the little guy, especially when they hear about us fightin' aliens and such." he says.

"Our best bet is catching these clowns in the act and getting the police evidence that a defense lawyer can't explain away."

"Truly?" He sounds surprised. It had been a long time for him. But then he searches the memories of the newest bearer of the Helmet.

"Ah. You are correct. Even the newest bearer's memories agree with what you say. But we must do something. This gang will continue to spread fear and chaos. We can not allow this to continue. So we will watch them," Fate says slowly. "It would be foolish to force their hand."

	He nods slowly. Plus in Fate's mind this would balance out all of the death and fear that had been spread. "You are correct. Where do we start?" His specialty lies in magic. Not breaking up gangs. He will let Warkawk lead this. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)
