Girl's Night Out
Between three jobs, two official and one unofficial, Maria didn't have much free time. All work and no play made a very boring life so once and awhile Maria made sure to take some time off and have some fun. Fun tonight involved getting together with Alina and having a Girl's Night Out.

She sent Alina a text with a time and location to meet.

Alina's phone chirps at her and she reads the text, doing some quick mental math to deal with time-differences.

...Yeah, she can swing that, assuming that Mom and Dad don't need her for the evening. They shouldn't, but it never hurts to check.

A few minutes later, she fires back a text of her own:

c u there!

Now, she just needs to piece an outfit together. And at least glance at her homework.

Maria finished her day at her day job at Wayne and did a quick patrol of Gotham before heading to Metropolis to meet Alina. First stop was the burger joint Jon had introduced her to for a quick bite. Then they'd be off to find some trouble...entertainment.

Alina might possibly abuse her access the YJLA teleporter, but it's better than having to deal with whatever side-effect her magic would toss up in exchange for a two-thousand-plus mile hop. Besides, it helps make sure she shows up somewhere secluded.

She saunters into the burger joint and pauses, running her fingers through her hair and looking around for Maria.

Maria had grabbed a soda while she waited for Alina. It would have been impolite to get food. Maria spotted Alina the second she entered the joint.

"Over here," she said with a smile and a wave.

"Ahh, there you are!"

Alina skips over, hopping up onto the bar stool next to Maria. "How's your day been, chica? Ready to cut loose and have a little fun?"

"Here I am," Maria said with a grin. "I'm always ready for some trouble, I mean fun. Hungry? I thought we'd grab a bite before wrecking havok."

"Mom said that if I get arrested over here, she's going to have me 'grounded' and make me walk home," Alina says with a grin. She contemplates the menu for a moment. "I could eat."

"It's only illegal if you get caught," Maria said with a grin. "And we won't get caught."

She fished an ice cube out of her drink and sent it flying across the room where it hit a waiter right between his eyes. Maria gave him a big smile and waved. The guy would get a generous tip, but he did need to pay attention. He started for the table.

"A waiter is coming." Subtle wasn't one of Maria's strong points. It wasn't even a point.

Alina chuckles to herself, flashing Maria a toothy grin in response. "Oh, I'm well aware of the value of not-getting-caught," she says. "And you'll notice my mom never said anything about not getting in trouble."

She purses her lips at Maria's waiter-summoning trick. "Impressive as that was," she says, "and it was pretty dang impressive, you could have just waved him down." She's got friends who work in the service industry, it compels her to call people out on shenanigans when she sees it.

"Where's the fun in that?" Maria asked. "Now, we would like to order," she told the waiter.

"I will have a double cheeseburger with as much bacon as humanly possible."

Alina smiles at the waiter and mouths 'sorry' at him when Maria turns away from her.

"I'd like a BBQ burger with pineapple please," she says. "And some more water, if it's not too much trouble."

She'll wait until the waiter's gone to continue their debate.

"So, what should we put on the agenda for tonight?" In Maria speak that was 'What kind of trouble are we going to get into'. "We have options."

"Seriously, don't chuck ice at the waitstaff, the job sucks enough as-is," Alina says once their waiter is out of ear-shot. Then she props an elbow on the tabletop and grins. "I think Jon would object if we grabbed a couple buckets and started literally painting the town, but I'd love to hear your ideas."

"I'll give him a big tip," she said. A slow smile came to her face. "I like that idea, but let's see. There's clubs, kicking some bad guy ass, bike racing, I know some great male strippers who would give us a private show...."

"Cool, I'm glad," Alina says. "You still don't need to throw things at him unless he's doing something illegal."

She taps a finger against her chin. "Strippers sound like an end-of-the-evening sort of thing," she says thoughtfully. "I don't have a bike to race, and there's a chance that we'll stumble on bad guys without needing to look for it." She raises her eyebrows. "Sure that clubbing won't be too much like going to work for you?"

"Surprisingly less fun than it sounds," Alina says. "At least when you have to take it off afterward. But I bet there's someplace we could get our hands on sidewalk chalk, or something else that'll wash off the next time it rains..."

Alina laughs. "Chica, if we can't find trouble, we need to call the rest of the team because reality will be warping something awful!"

She grins and taps her fingers on the table as she thinks. "Kind of enamored on the sidewalk chalk idea now, actually."

"You know, I think some water based paint will do just as well. It won't rub off when people will walk over it and it'll wash off with the rain."

"How long does that take to dry, do you know off the top of your head?" Alina asks, resting her elbows on the counter. "Also, I totally vote we make a hopscotch court and see how many people hop it like they should."

Which would mean drawing the court somewhere public, but who's going to object to a couple cute girls with chalk or washable paint?

"Huh, sounds like!" Alina says around a bite of burger, covering her mouth with her fingers so Maria doesn't have to look at semi-chewed food. "I try to avoid futzing with cameras if at all possible. Electronics are full of small finicky bits that don't like chaos in their systems."

"Nothing particularly spectacular," Alina says, making a face and taking a swig of water. "They mostly just spark and die. Which is handy when the bad guy brings out the doomsday machine, less when you actually want the automatic doors to open."

"Total pain in the butt," Alina agrees, flipping off the top of her burger and extracting the pineapple from the inside, popping it into her mouth and licking the barbeque sauce off her fingers. "Fortunately, I've gotten better at directing things like that elsewhere. My parents were worried I was going to have to live a Dresden Files life of no electronics ever."

"Writing papers suck to start with and then having to do them over...ugh." Maria blinked. "The what files?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]collateralmagic
2012-06-06 06:32 am UTC (link)
"Dresden Files," Alina repeats, as though that's an actual answer to Maria's question. "It's a fiction series about a wizard whose magic aura messes up electronics, so he has to avoid them as much as possible. Means lots of candles, no computers, and cars that are easy to repair." She drops the bun back on top of her burger and takes a bite. "Fortunately, I didn't end up needing to worry about that. Mostly."

"And mine's more unpredictable than most," Alina said wryly. "No offense taken. It's not for everyone -- just something I was born to, like a great butt and a natural tan."

She took a healthy bite out of her burger.

"So how are you and Jon doing?"

"We're doing okay." Alina took a bite out of her own burger. "So far, we've eked by without getting caught in the regular chaos of our lives, and I have successfully avoided a situation where I have to watch him pretend to be intimidated by my father's "so you're the one dating my baby girl" threats." She grinned. "I'd call that a success."

Alina shrugged. "I've dated on and off, but that was before I joined the team. At least I know Jon will know how to act and who to call if something pops up to try and kidnap me."

Which hadn't happened so far, yet. Alina glanced around to try and find something wooden to knock on.

"I'm sure he does, but anything that comes after me is going to be magic," Alina points out, making a face. "It's always magic things with me. 'New Age of Magic' baby and all that." She shrugs. "So really, I'm just looking for him to fly real fast and get help more than 'take on the video game character magically summoned to reality'."
