Jai is surprised at the resistance to his blow, but he's not deterred yet. All that means is that Curious George is going to get owned.
The mental assault catches Jai off-guard, and while he has a slight bit of defense due to his ability to think fast than most people. The pain and psychic energy attack manage to slow him enough to leave him open to physical attack.
