Council Meeting
Below or above the surface, Atlantis was Atlantis. Not much had changed in the city and with the people even though it was now an island on the surface of the water. There was still rebuilding to do, but the population of the city went about their daily lives and politics and government never took a break.

It was Cait's first weekend in Atlantis as part of the deal with her mother and Arthur. Ty was with her and so far Arthur had been on his best behavior. Ty was stressed and Cait was stressed, but they were able to handle it. For now.

Today was a council meeting and Cait was looking forward to it. She had an ace up her sleeve and with any luck, after the meeting she won't be betrothed to Cerdian.

She took a deep breath and walked into the council chambers.

Garth was also intrigued, wondering who Caitria has in mind. Apparently Arthur knew, because Garth didn't miss the nod to Mera.

"His name is Tyler Darnell," she said. "He was the one who saved Atlantis from Oceanus and Tethys. Yes, he is responsible for bringing Poseidonis to the surface, but he can also return her to the depths." She left it hanging there with the unspoken but.

Arthur remains not at all happy about this. It still feels like blackmailing the council... which is totally different from trying to ensure an Atlantean succession. Still, it seemed the best option, rather than losing his daughter.

"Go on."

Lord Ardath raised an eyebrow. "Why does that name sound familiar?"

"He is the young man that Princess Caitria has taken a liking to. He has aided us in the past, as she says." Garth speaks.

"However...before we consider this plan, perhaps there are other options we can explore?" Garth suggests.

He knows that Arthur would rather cut his tongue out than ask Ty's help, so Garth is trying to find alternate solutions for his friend.

Maurita smiled. She knew the name and the boy in question. She had seen him with the Princess and had seen the look on each of their faces.

"But why won't he help?" Maurita asked. "

"Because he objects to the council's decree regarding the marriage between the Princess and Cerdian." he fills in. "Or, indeed, finding any other suitable Atlantean match for Princess Caitria."

"That's right." Lord Ardath said, nodding his head. "With respect your Majesty, I believe the boy would object to ANY match, Atlantean or otherwise. He's in love. And men in love can be very stubborn individuals."

"Would you be inclined to help the very people who would keep you from the person you love?" Cait asked. "I will not disgrace my honor and the honor of Atlantis by using Ty's feelings for me to get him to do this for us. I respect myself, Atlantis and him too much for that."

Cait took a deep breath. Here's the hard part.

"Maybe we can reach a compromise that would be more acceptable to all parties," Cait suggested.

"I love Cerdian like a brother and that's how I see him," she said. "We grew up closer than some siblings and in our hearts that's what we are to each other. No matter the situation I would still not want to marry him. What I suggest is that instead of me marrying the one person that I don't want to marry, let me accept suits from anyone, human or Atlantean, who wants to present one. Ty will be more inclined to help Atlantis and there is the possibility of me marrying an Atlantean. There is no perfect solution to this, but I hope we can agree on a compromise."

"Your're suggesting we introduce the hope that there is at least a possibility that he may one day have your hand?" Lord Ardath leaned back. "Given longstanding Atlantean traditions this feels more like a proposal to get the boy's hopes up so he may aid us. I'm not entirely comfortable with that."

"My wife brought up the possibility of such a compromise before this meeting. I understand that some more conservative elements of the council are concerned about proper succession, and forging alliances through marriage, as was traditional. However... our current situation has left us vulnerable.... and there is the princess' happiness to be considered.

As such, when Mera agreed to endorse this possibility, I told her what I'll tell you now. I cannot fly in the face of the council's decrees, or try and gain special favors for my family... as such, I cannot support this resolution... but I won't oppose it either. If the council agrees to allow the princess to marry as she will, I'll step aside."

As reasonable as he's going to get.

For Arthur, that was a lot. She tried not to smile at her father's willingness to work with her and keep his end of the deal, but the corners of her mouth did turn up a bit.

"If this is unacceptable to the council, may I ask that the subject of me marrying anyone be set aside for some time? I will do my duties to Atlantis and to her people, but I ask for a little time to live my life before those duties become my life."

"I concur with the Princess. If the matter cannot be resolved, then this burden should not be left hovering over her head for the rest of her life on the surface."

"I have reservations about this as well." Garth says, noting that Cerdian was being shoved aside without being here to voice his concerns. Granted, he hadn't much liked the idea of marrying Cait, but she was a damn sight better than most of the girls that had come seeking favor of late.

He thought Dolphin was going to kill the last one.

"Perhaps we should discuss this more in private, the better to weigh our options." Garth says.

"Oh stop being /men/," Maurita said. "Let her marry whomever she wants. Atlantis will deal. It's about time we have things shaken up around here. Traditions are traditions, not laws. We don't have any laws concerning any marriage of a princess or prince. Let Princess Caitria be happy."

Lord Ardath audibly snickers at Lady Maurita's comment. "Well I wouldn't have put it quite like that, but I agree with Lady Maurita's sentiment. Life in Atlantis is changing all around us, it's perhaps time to we realized it."

"The Council has always taken Atlantis' welfare seriously," Mera interjected. "The Council is wise enough to realize that Atlantis must change with the world. Perhaps what we are all not seeing is the possibility of two alliances to be made rather than one royal marriage. Our children /can/ be happy and still care for our people."

"And the royal family represents everything Atlantis is," Lord Ozell points out. "Perhaps this is a blessing? To show we can truly grow as a people. While I only know what is said of the young man in question perhaps.... Perhaps he and the Princess should be seen together? To help people get used to the idea."

Arthur is, frankly, surprised. The council is being unusually open minded and reasonable... which usually means something is up. On the other hand, getting on the good side of Mera and the princess can't hurt them.

Lord Ozell smiles a little more.

"Exactly. I do not expect that this will become a true issue for some time. The Princess is young after all. It is reasonable to let her be that and happy. For what is good for our Royal Family must be good for the health of Atlantis, and I can see this being a good thing."

Because it would bring Princess Cait home. Lord Ozell knew that would make his King and Queen happy and if they were happy Atlantis would benefit from that.

"Let's say we give this a year and see how the people feel about this boy of Caitria's then. For now there will be no marriage between Cerdian and Caitria and both Cerdian and Caitria are free to see whomever they please. Agreed?" Maurita said.
