Team Dynamics
As far as she could tell, this was all bullshit and wasn't getting any better. The transition into the care of her father was still rough. Marissa didn't know if it were safe to get to know him at all, especially after discovering that he was...had been Batman. It offered her an outlet, though. After discovering she was hell-bent on being out in the guts of the city to track down the slime who murdered Vicki, Marissa got her own cape, her own job.

Robin.

Batman's sidekick.

Except Daddy Dearest wasn't Batman. Terry was and Bruce had turned her over to him completely. This soured with Marissa. Who the hell was this...kid that he could have authority over her? That alone irritated her. The costume she was supposed to wear irritated her more. Marissa was not wearing the green-red-yellow disaster. It was ugly. And obvious. No. No way.

She had spent the better part of the past two weeks redoing the costume. Batman wore black. Okay, fine, no black. But there was nothing wrong with a blood red so deep it was almost onyx. It called up in her the sight of her mother's spilling blood. It drove her, that hue. Geared up completely save for her mask, she idly noted that she looked a touch like a red Batman with boobs. She didn't care.

But Terry might.

"I'm here."

And early for a change instead. Reporting for patrol always pissed her off.

"Maybe you should check the messages on your comm-link then. It's not my fault if you're absent minded."

Batman boarded the Batplane.

"In case you haven't noticed, I'm not exactly thrilled about this little dynamic duo that we have going on here," he said, flipping switches to get the plane started.

"Well that makes two of us. I don't need a babysitter, goddamnit so trust me, first chance I get I will be glad to be rid of you."

She settled into her seat, trying to settle her disdain for him long enough to focus on the exact sequence he flipped switches in.

Never know when she might need the plane.

"You think you can patrol by yourself? Then by all means, go ahead and tell Bruce that you think you're ready. I don't care."

He was probably horrible for thinking it, but it would probably do her some good if someone knocked her down a few pegs.

"Don't bother," he said, when he caught her watching him out of the corner of his eye. "You may know how to turn it on, but that'll be hard to do when you find out that you can't get on without me."

"I have. Bruce doesn't give a shit about what I have to say. He doesn't fucking care. And needing you for the plane is temporary. You're not almighty, you're not the only one, and you aren't God. I will be independent of you. The only person I ever needed is gone. You're just a temporary shackle."

She crossed her arms over her chest. If he hadn't been such a jackass from day one she might have tried to be nice but now. No one in the damn house was even remotely nice. All jerks. All of them.

"It's my plane. You want to pilot so badly- you can get your own. You want to be by yourself so badly, you better work for it then, not bitch and moan."

The Batplane lifted off the ground and they were out.

"So are you always a sourpuss?"

She didn't look at him. She focused instead on the landscape, noting details and landmarks, shadows and light from their height.

Batman actually managed to give her a smirk. "I don't know. Depends on whether I've had my coffee or not."

Pain in ass as she is, he might as well try and make this go a little easier for them both.

Marissa considered this...and warily wondered what the hell the smirk meant.

"So is coffee good for yay not crabby Batman or coffee bad? I have a Starbucks card we can completely go nuts with. Except...it's in my not-so-leather pants."

"Coffee is very good. I just might have to take you up on that Starbucks card."

Batman relaxed at the controls. They weren't at each other's throats. For now.

"Well, there's a ton of money on it so I can keep you un-cranky and fueled forever. Bruce gave it to me. I think it was a bribe or something, but hey. Lattes are expensive and if he's paying, fine by me."

Whoa. They were being civil. Must be a trap.

"Well. I don't sleep anymore anyway. Haven't for months. Sleep is weak. And the coffee probably won't make me like him any more. He's a jerk. I'm failing to see what my mother ever saw in him."

Batman was silent for a moment. He didn't know what to say to that. He was angry at Bruce too, but for a completely different reason than she was. "You should at least try to nap or something."

She's oddly quiet for a moment.

"I really don't want to. I don't care for nightmares."

He knew how that felt. He had them for weeks after his dad was murdered.

"Nightmares suck."

He knew how she felt. "I know," he said flatly. "I've been there too." Pain in the ass as she is, he knows exactly what she's going through.

"You saw it happen?" Under his mask, Batman furrowed his brow. He couldn't imagine what that felt like. He slowed the Batplane down.

"Look, I know we don't get along so well, but sometimes...at least talking about this kind of thing to a person helps."

"Yeah. Saw it happen. Smelled the gunpowder. Was coming around the corner as it happened. Nothing I could do."

She shook her head, trying to summon up her brashness, her hardness.

"Yeah, well...you don't like me, the old man kind of avoids me and I hate shrinks. I'll sort it out."

"And no matter how much you wish that you could go back and change it, you know that you can't." Yes. He knew how she felt.

Terry sighed.

"Look. We got off on the wrong foot. Bruce kind of threw us at each other, and we reacted. I'm not saying that I hate you or anything, but I could have acted better than how I did. How I've been acting. You've been through the mill and I shouldn't have treated you the way I did. I'm sorry."

And he truly meant it.

Marissa is silent for a long time, picking a bit at her costume.

"I wasn't exactly nice to you, either. It's really hard. It was always me and Mom. Then she was gone and suddenly I'm Bruce Wayne's daughter and the scumball who killed my mother is still out there AND my father--and I kinda always wanted a dad--doesn't seem to want anything to do with me. I shouldn't have taken my rage out on you. You don't suck that much.

"But you really can't tell time."

"You had a lot that you had to adjust too. I should have done more to help you. We both weren't in the best place. There was a situation and we reacted badly."

The tiniest hint of a smirk might there.

"In the future I'll try to improve that, O Mistress of Time."

"Good. Because I'm trying, Terry. I really am. I know you don't see it, but I take this seriously. Hence the new and not so obvious costume. I can't help you if people can see me coming, you know? So. Tonight we patrol. Tomorrow, I get you coffee. Deal?"

"I know you are. I haven't exactly been making things easy for you. I'm supposed to train you, after all. And that's what I'll do. Train you. No more bickering, we're a team now." He grinned at her. "I'll hold you to it."

"Alright."

She grinned and adjusted her mask.

"Let's go beat the hell out of some baddies."

This might work after all.
