Bump in the Night (Rex)
Rex was never around. It was nice, generally, in the 'I get to do whatever I want' sense of things, but Nic had to admit it was weird and sad, too. She never saw her brother anymore and for a little while she was considering some sort of epic bad behavior to get his attention. Underage drinking was always a good option, after all, but something came up first. The theft at the museum opened up a great opportunity, both to get some Hawk action with her brother and also to be badass. So, after Wendi left and Nic was able to sort out her leads, Nic sent her brother a quick text.

Shadow Thief stole the Dimensionimeter. Heading to Westfield Park to hunt him down. Bring the Claw.

And then she was off, taking to the sky to go track down and kick some bad guy ass.

Rex was walking out of the apartment to go find Nic when his phone went off. He read the text and his eyes widen as he realizes what his sister has been doing. He really, really, wishes she was with Cindy now. Or Mickey.

Or anywhere but where she is.

Come home, Nic. Now! Do not go after that guy alone! Rex sends back.

He runs back into the apartment to grab his gear and exits the building again, this time from the rooftop. He leaps into the St. Roch night and speeds in the direction of the park, radioing the Justice Society as well.

	Nic gets the text, but ignores it, turning off her phone so that she can deal with the Shadow Thief once she finds him without it giving her away. Within minutes she's landing in Westfield Park, taking a moment to listen carefully and get her bearings. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

	Damn it! She wasn't responding to him. Rex flapped his wings as fast and as hard as he could, drawing his mace and getting ready for any trouble that might be awaiting them. Chances were that Pnnt was walking into an ambush and she wasn't taking any precautions. How many times had he told her to watch herself? Yet another thing she didn't listen to. 	On the ground it was quiet, but Nic kept her eyes open. It didn't take her long to discern where the darkest shadows were. It was the most logical place for the Shadow Thief to hide. The hand on the mouth is a very, very unpleasant surprise, as is the voice.

This ain't the Shadow Thief.

But the hand doesn't stop her; she does scream, albeit in a muffled fashion and more than that, she tries to bite him. The angle of his grasp makes her mace nearly useless and her wings hurt as his body smashes them down against her body. Her feet are free, though, so she tries to kick the crap out of the guy, grateful she wore a pair of work boots this night.

Rex. Rex was coming. He'd kick this guy's ass. He would.

Minutes later, Rex comes walking into the park, mace at the ready. He's prepared for anything he comes across, anyone who might try to surprise him from the shadows.

He sees one of Nic's feathers upon the ground and goes in the direction it was pointed, finding another and still another. Wow, the kid was so nervous she was molting? He was going to have to talk to her about that.

Of course, when he steps into the clearing and finds his sister's body lying in a pool of blood, her neck twisted at an unnatural angle, Rex has to blink several times to make sure that he's not dreaming or simply imagining the scene before him.

When that doesn't work, Rex tears off his mask and drops his mace to the floor.

"NICOLETTE!" he screams, running toward her. He doesn't care if everyone finds out he's Warhawk. He doesn't give a shit if there's twenty men with weapons waiting in ambush.

He has to get his sister to a hospital, somewhere, /anywhere/ when she can get help.

Because this can't be the rest of his life, living without her.

Wendi had given Jacob a communicator so he could get in touch with his friends a lot easier. Rex's general message had registered on it. He had been relatively nearby. Maybe he wasn't a superhero, but these were his friends. As the park comes in sight, he sees the older, but still familiar form of a winged woman with her neck snapped.

"NIC!" The normally gentle giant is angry, and not thinking as he runs toward his old firend's body.

Nic can see them, most of them anyway, as they arrive. Her eyes are open and she's still aware, though even that's starting to get fuzzy. She can move nothing and feel nothing but at the same time there's just pain, burning and searing in her chest. For a moment the gurgling gives way to a whine of sorts and a tear rolls down her cheek.

It's only been minutes, but it feels like eternity and then slowly, everything starts to go black.

The gurgling stops. There is only silence.

	At the slightest hope that anything can be done, Steven, and Nic's body are gone. By the time he gets to the Brownstone, he's pushed his speedforce form hard enough to have lost seven pounds, but he's there less than half a second after Rex finished talking, hoping someone else put the call through, or will soon. He has no idea how he's going to tell Mom and Carter what happened. He has no idea how he's going to tell Cindy. He has no idea about /anything/ right now, except for one small matter...

whoever did this is a dead man or woman.

	Rex looks at the new guy, because he hasn't seen him before, or at least, he doesn't think he has. "We'll be sorting out who has to answer for this real soon. Doctor Fate had been so quite but after Rex left he turned to the others who were still there.

"I will be looking into who did this. I shall return here latter should anyone need me to bring them back to the Brownstone."

Right now he is already looking at spells he can cast to see back to that moment. Mark thinks it might make him vomit but he has to see. So he flies up into the air, over one hundred feet so he can search and weave his spells without being stopped.

	Mickey was late getting to the Brownstone, though she came running the second she got the page. The moment she walked in, her heart sunk into her chest, and she felt the world halt to a sudden stop.
