Repayment for loyal service (backdated to the end of "Uncivil War")
Morgaine stood next to her brother at the Lazarus Pits. She knew that while Damien had been looking into them for their medical uses, he had mostly been destroying them.

But the person they were bringing back deserved nothing less for the way that he had sacrificed himself.

Morgaine turned to Damien. "They're ready to bring him in."

"I will be brief. Come morning, you will no longer be in charge of my personal safety, James. Your previous work was exemplary, and I do not wish to risk you a second time on such matters." Damien says to him as he enters the room.

Now, he turns and faces James, looking him directly in the eyes.

"I would, however, offer you another position in this organization. You are well-read, eloquent and intelligent. You are known and respected by the rest of the League. Even Morgaine speaks well of you." Damien smiles.

"I ask that you become my right hand, James. Events are taking shape that will require my presence elsewhere, but my commands still need to be carried out. I would place you at my right hand to keep the League running smoothly, should I be absent...for any reason." Damien says.

"And if my wife and children do not return to me...then /you/ shall become the Demon's Head." Damien says.

Looking him in the eye, Damien might be able to catch the flicker of hurt as it fades, once James understands his removal from his master's security detail is not due to inadequacy.

And then, he just looks surprised. "Master Damien, I am honored. I... I wouldn't want any disrespect to Morgaine, of course. And... I'm sorry, I don't understand that last part." Or doesn't want to.

"Morgaine has the ability to become the Demon's Head, the intelligence, but she does not /want/ it. I do not know that she ever has, my friend. She enjoys the thrill of the hunt and the kill itself. This would be the equivalent of taking her off of active duty.

I expect that she would not give me a moment's peace if I took her out of the field." Damien says with a chuckle. He could never imagine his sister being pregnant, or doing anything that would limit her effectiveness in combat.

That bothered him, deep down.

"Granted, I do not intend to retire for quite some time, old friend, and I have no plans to die. But if the worst should happen, you are being considered. I want you to know that. In the meantime, I ask that you work alongside me and be my...herald of sorts. When I need a message delivered or a deal made, you may speak on my behalf." Damien says.
