The Hour is Upon Us
Wendi had finally had the time to stop by the JSA brownstone.  Between recent events in the super-hero community, her own art school schedule, boyfriend time (Zach.  *blush*), a few small scale heroics (her hour of strength still worked, even if her speed didn't), and just life had gotten in the way of being there any timer sooner since they'd reconnected with Mickey.

She wondered if Rex was going to kick her off the team.  After how she'd freaked out with Mickey's death and everything, she certain deserved it.  What kind of hero ran in the face of danger like that?  Oh, sure, they all said they didn't blame her, but none of them had run...

Sometimes she wondered why she was even here.  Grandpa Rex and Grandpa Johnny, Grandma Libby, Mom, Dad, all of them had been super-heroes.  It was kind of just what the family did.  All of them, her, Belle, Danette, Matt, and Beth, and probably even Jonni (another girl, Matt was depressed and the kid wasn't even born yet), were all metahumans.  Powers were in the blood.  Were heroics too?

"Hey?" she called out as she headed inside.  "Anybody home?"

Rex was in the kitchen, dressed in his gym gear and waiting for Wendi. After what happened to Mickey, she was avoiding the team and walking on eggshells. Rex wondered if Wendi still wanted to be part of a team where anyone could die at anytime.

Was she afraid they wouldn't protect her?

"In here, Wendi." Rex says, waiting for her.

"How are you holding up? You haven't been around much lately. I wanted to talk to you about the team and your place in it." Rex says.

Wendi headed into the kitchen. "All right. Keeping busy mostly. I keep trying to see if my speed's coming back, and it hasn't."

She looked down. "I think I went too fast fighting that Black Lantern version of my grandfather."

"Give it time, Wendi. You, just like everyone else, went through hell with those Black Lanterns. You did a pretty good job out there.

But...you've also lived a pretty sheltered life, compared to a lot of us. I need to know if being a member of the Justice Society is something you really want." Rex says, relaxing a bit.

"After the stuff that's happened lately, I don't blame you if you want to go try to have a normal life. If you want to stay, though, we should talk about some things." Rex says.

"Thanks," she said.

Wendi looked up. "I know I'm... kinda sheltered. And kind of a prude too. I am, I know."

"But I also know I'm getting better at this hero thing. It's in my blood. It's where I want to be."

"Hey, your sexual experience or lack of, doesn't factor in to my opinion of you, Wendi." Rex says, sitting up.

"Now, you need to know a couple of things if you're going to be on the team. None of us are going to let anything happen to you that doesn't happen to us first. We're a family around here. I don't cook for just anyone." Rex smiles.

"But I need to know that everyone here has everyone else's back. We don't run unless we have to. And if you're upset, hurt, or need time to think, tell me and we'll make it happen.

But don't disappear. I don't know what to think or do if you vanish." Rex says.

Wendi nodded. "I understand. It's not going to happen again."

"Good. Now, I had a thought. I've watched you a bit lately and I see you can scrap a bit, but...I think you could benefit from a little more training.

I could teach you a few moves, if you're up for it." Rex says.

"I'd like that," Wendi said. "Mom and Dad showed me a few things... but both of them are more brawlers than fighters, really."

"All right," Wendi said, as she followed after.

Rex walks over to the heavy bag in the corner and waits for Wendi, holding it for her.

"I need to see ten of your best punches, Wendi. Give me an idea of what we're working with. Your speed and strength are two big advantages you've got, depending on which one you're working with at the time.

You've got all the right tools, but I don't know if you know that." he says.

Wendi laid into the bag with the best punches she had. The strikes were... somewhat clumsy, like someone used to letting her powers do the bulk of the work, but not without some sense of it.

"You've got some basics down, Wendi, but you just need to get used to fighting without your strength. When you can take someone down without your strength, I promise, you'll be that much more effective with it." Rex says, moving behind her.

He corrects her stance, followed by her punches, then goes back behind the bag.

"You want to be explosive when you're throwing that punch. You're trying to take this guy down before he can get his hands on you and hurt you. He's not going to stop unless you make him.

Now try again. Give me ten good punches." Rex says.

Okay, explode. She can do that.

"Got it."

Wendi launched into ten more punches. Maybe not as good as Rex would probably want, but better than they'd been. There's a little more power, a lot more explosion.

Rex likes the effort a lot better. She's a quick learner. This reminds him, oddly, of teaching Nicolette how to defend herself when she was smaller.

"The important thing to know is that people are going to under-estimate you because of your size, Wendi. They're going to think they can push you around because you're a girl and you're smaller.

First time you floor a guy with one punch, he's going to have rethink that whole 'girls are weak' thing." Rex says.

"Ten more. Go."

That actually got a little bit of a grin out of her. "You really think so?" she asked.

The punches were even better than last time.

"I know so." Rex says, returning the grin.

"Those punches are getting better. Let's switch this up." Rex tells her. He steps out from behind the bag, grabs the hand-pads, holds up his hands and invites Wendi to swing.

"Now, the important thing to know is how to stick and move. Ten more, this time. But now, you'll need to duck when I swing. We'll take it slow first." he says.

And after a couple swings, Rex aims a light punch at Wendi's head, just to keep her on her toes.

Wendi's eyes went wide, but even with only ordinary human reaction time, she managed to duck out of the way.

"Whoa. That was close."

Rex takes another swipe at her.

"Don't let your guard down." Rex says. "And keep moving. You never want to stand still and trade blows with him someone if you can avoid it. Gives them enough time to land the one punch that ends it all.

The most important punch in boxing, and all fighting, is the jab. Someone comes at straight at you, a fist to the nose or mouth will make them rethink that idea quickly." Rex says, demonstrating the jab.

"Let's see it again."

Wendi dodged again, following Rex's advice and keeping her guard up this time.

"Got it," she said, putting out a very solid jab.

"Good. Keep it up." Rex says, working with her for the better part of an hour.

"You've got some real talent, Wendi. I'm up for helping you develop it, if you're interested. You'll be able to flatten a group of guys in no time, without your powers...which will make you much scarier when you /do/ use them." Rex says.

"Awesome. Then be here Monday after school and we'll get a few more rounds in." Rex says.

"And you can practice on your own at home, too. Work on keeping your guard up and you'll do a lot of the work that will get your muscle memory going." Rex says.
