There may have even been a few drunken texts or texts that just seemed weird (vodka + auto correct = very bizarre texts). But she kept sending them.

Marissa sat down on the edge of Keith's bed and studied him for a moment. It had been a rough few months, that much was true, but the amount of time she and Keith had been apart wasn't terribly unusual. It was a by-product of living in different cities and of having different responsibilities in and out of the cape. Keith never expressed regret and that he was now was telling.

"You killed Frank Wells, didn't you?"

There was no judgment in her voice or expression. Truth was, she would have done it herself had she not been blindsighted with the rest of her world exploding.

"...yes. I killed Frank Wells."

It was hard to say it out loud. He was scared his parents might hear him say it, and that was something he didn't need to share with them. Robert had taken the fall for him, and he was going to respect his brother's choice.

"I hate myself for it, Marissa. I hate that I lost control. And I hate that I had to let my brother take the fall for my mistake."

Marissa pulled Keith into her arms and then lay down on the bed, snuggling close to him and kissing his temple, playing with his hair. She held him tightly for a long moment.

"If you hadn't done it, I would have. I had everything I needed and was on my way when the news broke. He killed my brother's fiancee, he killed your sister, and he tried to kill me. The man served hell to my family, dragged yours into it...he would have gotten out, Keith. He would have gotten out and come after me again. Or gone after your other sister. Or my brother."

Marissa kissed Keith and trembled a bit beside him at the thought of the Artist going on another killing spree. Seeing Mia die had been almost too much as it was. She still couldn't clear the image from her mind no matter how much she drank.

"You're my hero. You ended Wells and saved me. Please don't hate yourself for it. I don't." She paused. "And I don't know anything about this brother you speak of, but it doesn't sound like you let him take the fall; it sounds like he did what my brother would have done for me and you have to respect that. He protected you. I thank him for that because I don't know that I could handle not having you here."
