Together again for the first time

Ra's al Ghul's relationship with Gotham City is formed of love and hate. He hates this cesspool of corruption and decay and wishes to see it wiped from the Earth. He's tried several times, but each time, he is always thwarted by the man who embodies the things he loves about Gotham.

The Detective.

Batman is the most formidable opponent that Ra's al Ghul has ever known, the only man who can come close to matching his own brilliance. This city shaped a young boy who witnessed his parents' murders into an incorruptible symbol of justice and hope for those who had none. There were days that Ra's mocked the Detective for his drive, told him that he would eventually burn away his family's fortune on a fools' quest to eliminate crime in Gotham. But Ra's had always respected Batman's determination as well, for it matched his own.

But that is not why he has come to Gotham this time. He will renew the war between himself and Batman soon enough.

Today, he is here for someone else.

Jane Doe-Smith both intrigues and confuses Ra's al Ghul, because he knows nothing about her, a situation he is not often in. The pictures upon her walls, the papers on her desk and even the items in her kitchen give him pieces of the puzzle, but not all. He recognizes the man in the pictures with Jane; he'd been forced by that ingrate demon, Nekron, to go after him while chasing his worthless granddaughter, Morgaine.

Now, he waits in Jane's apartment for her to return, as he has for the last two days, with a fresh batch of flowers.

He hopes she'll at least allow him to speak.

She had been a busy woman. Off to Star City to see Mia and her beloved magician. The news had given Jane hope. Hope that maybe somehow things would get better. She had checked her e-mail. All four different accounts. Looked at her phone messages constantly.

She had to hold onto hope. It was starting to get crushed though. She took her time going home hoping that maybe he was watching for her. It turned out he wasn't and it just left her feeling wounded so she made plans to send Roy what he wanted.

Of course she finally went home so she could do that. She also needed to rest so she wouldn't make herself sick. And sensed something was off so she had her gun out as she made her way though her apartment. She narrowed her eyes but kept her gun level with the floor so it wasn't pointing at Ra's as she watched him.

"What are you doing here?"

"Well, I am in your home. I was hoping to find you here, Miss Smith." Ra's says, moving forward slowly to offer her the yellow carnations. He keeps his eyes upon hers, offering a gentle smile.

"I have been curious about you since our recent...collaboration. You are not like most women." he observes, sitting down on the couch.

"I admit that I expected your dashing your man to accompany you home. Did he have something more urgent to attend to?" Ra's asks.

She decides that she won't shoot him. Her gun goes into her shoulder holster as she takes the flowers with a curious expression on her face. She hadn't expected flowers.

"I'm not certain where he is," she says after a moment glancing back up at him. "I don't think he knows I'm alive again. I'm trying to make it obvious but not covering up my tracks."

She moves to sit in her recliner, just across from him.

"Not like most women?" She lets one eyebrow go up. "Is it my being a detective or something else?"

"You're a detective?" he asks, as if he didn't know. "I have an interesting relationship with detectives."

He sits back, regarding her with a smile as he relaxes.

"No, you are not like most women, I think. You have a vulnerability about you, but you are as tenacious as any man. You are a warrior, but you also employ your mind to overcome obstacles." he says.

"I know these things because I have spent a bit of time researching you, trying to learn more about you. But one thing is certain: if I were your young man, nothing would have kept me from your side the moment I realized you were alive." Ra's says.

"You and I shared a traumatic experience, Jane. May I call you Jane? We were allowed to return to our lives when so many others were not. But the real question is.../why/ was it us?

I would like to hear your thoughts on this." Ra's says.

Oh yeah she's real sure this guy knows nothing about her at all. And he is completely innocent and had all this time in her place alone; he obviously knows nothing.

Mental sarcasm is something she shouldn't practice regularly.

"I don't think he realizes I was brought back," she says again. It isn't in a very confident tone. Being dead had shook her up.

"I think I know why. Each of us who was brought back happened to be a 'big player' in some manner. It's like.Someone was playing the world's biggest poker game. They gambled on the heroes and whoever else that got tapped into fighting Nekron into not going after them. We're the insensitive. Not just you and I. You, me, and the other pieces. And they certainly don't want any of us knowing what their plan was. Problem is? Can't find out who they are. Can't exactly go up and start questioning the heroes who were there. Don't think they'd respond kindly to questioning at this point. This.... Thing. It has everyone shaken. It's pretty rare for events to drag every single hero and villain out of the woodwork just to survive."

Of course she wanted to know who was behind their being alive again. Too much had been changed and while she didn't want to rain on everyone's parade of joy and excitement being alive had her both disturbed and worried that something was going to happen.

"I like how you use the terms 'hero' and 'villain' so loosely." Ra's says, favoring her with a smile. "Such optimism is truly the province of a different generation."

He looks at Jane with a small amount of pity as she says that her young man doesn't realize she's alive.

"I think that's true, in more ways than just one. Have you contacted him? Would he respond to you right away if he knew? Or would he make you wait on his every word, wondering if he's not bleeding in a ditch somewhere.

Or, what if he's out at the bar, enjoying a drink in the company of another?" Ra's asks.

"The problem is he was trying to save his half-brother," Jane says in a tone that says this was probably not in her lover's best interest. She doesn't think it was because no one seems to be willing to believe that anyone can change.

"Younger brothers it seems cause a great deal of trouble. Especially when they're angry. And I don't blame the kid, If I had half a chance I might have executed the monster that killed my friend as well. I'm convinced Robert would have if his younger brother hadn't gotten their first. The one thing I'm sure anyone can agree on no matter what side you claim to be on is that you defend your family." She tiredly runs her hand through her bangs.

"He asked for me to get him out of the United States. To get them without really telling me. I've put it all together since then. He didn't trust me with that information. Probably to protect me. He knows that if I were ever questioned I wouldn't lie; I don't think he would ever ask me to compromise the principals I live by. And I may do many things because I care about him but I won't change who I am, that would be spitting on the memory of someone better than him and myself."

She means her adopted father. He wasn't perfect but he was a good man.

"And the reason why I'm being so free with what I'm saying is that I have very little to hide. I'm not sure of everything right now but I'm fairly certain that you know more than the casual observer would know about my comings and goings. I've also never actually tried to hide what I do. Don't have a reason to. Only person I would protect can handle themselves better than I can and they have better back up most of the time."

"Family, I have learned, is both the greatest asset and liability one can have. You can love them, nurture them, and do your best to ensure that they have all they need to be happy...and it won't stop them from driving a blade through your heart when it suits them best." Ra's says, looking down at the floor ruefully.

"Does it bother you that he didn't consider you capable enough to protect yourself? Or that he didn't trust you to tell you his full plan?" Ra's asks.

"Considering that you're a bright, resourceful and attractive woman, he should know that you're capable of keeping yourself safe. The arrogance of men has never ceased to amaze me. Even I've been guilty of it, in my more liberal days.

We meet a strong, attractive woman who was fending for herself long before we came along to muck things up. But we always revert to that lower-brain instinct that says 'men must protect women', even when the idea of such is utterly foolish." Ra's says, leaning in as though he's sharing a secret with Jane.

"Did he even ask you to join him on his little adventure with his brother?"

"No. He just....Left. And I know it was all to keep his brother safe. But I've been taking care of myself a long time." She laughs a little.

"I've ought Yakuza, and been able to not have to kill them. Not a small feat for a small time detective like myself. He's seen me fight. I even saved his life. I... Wish he just trusted me. I sure have trusted him. He knows more about me than anyone." Unconsciously she reaches across and rubs her other shoulder where the last person she trusted that much shot her intending on leaving her for dead. It was actually sore after coming back from the dead.

"I agree with you about that. Men I've found can be pig-headed idiots, especially when the woman they're dealing with is tiny." She sighs a bit. "And for an American woman I'm rather tiny. I'm lucky I don't get carded at the bar."

Being just over five feet tall was not an asset in her job though it did make breaking into places if she had to easy.

"Maybe... He was afraid I'd slip and kill someone. Because I use guns. I'm not an archer. I don't sugar-coat my fighting style either, I'm a little too rough, not exactly refined."

"Jane, he doesn't trust you because you represent something he doesn't understand. You are a strong woman, one that doesn't need to be taken care of and since he can't sweep in and rescue you...he has to find /some/ way to take control.

So he leaves you for long stretches with nary a word, expecting that you'll simply be here when he returns." Ra's says. "Never mind that you have your own hopes, goals and dreams. Oh no, because /that/ would make you a person, and most men are not equipped to deal with women on anything more than a physical level."

Ra's stands up and walks around the table to kneel next to Jane.

"Refinement, or lack thereof, doesn't determine someone's worth. I've met so-called 'refined' people without an ounce of class and so-called 'unrefined' people who command attention because of that trait.

You're the latter, Jane. Very much so." Ra's says, reaching out to place a hand upon hers.

She wasn't sure why se was even listening to Ra's. She was hurting pretty badly. She knew that. She had blamed herself for getting turned into Black Lantern. If only she had been stronger.

"And that's why you're here." She watches him. "I don't get it. I'm not exactly the sort of person someone like you should find that interesting. For one I'm a very different person than you."

Very different and she couldn't think of where to start and end in just how different they were. "You only saw what the Black Lantern twisted to attack Robert. Not who I really am."

"There is /some/ truth in what they showed us. Moreover, I like what I have learned about you thus far, Jane. I'd like to learn more." he says.

"And we are not so different if you look deeper. We have been injured by people who claimed to love us. We are both alone right now, and may yet be. We both suffered a traumatic event that our loved ones cannot comprehend.

You and I have learned a great deal about each other, Jane, in my estimation." Ra's says.

God. he felt weak right now. And he was close enough to just touch. She didn't want to be alone right now. Everything hurt. She missed just having someone near by.

And he was offering something she needed so badly right now. She could let herself be just a little weak. Tentatively she reached for him and just leaned a little against him. Not trying to invade his space, she was just going to rest her forehead against him silently.

Ra's simply holds her, saying nothing for a long moment. There is no need. She is alone and her faith in her young man has been shaken. Normally, Ra's al Ghul would credit himself with such success, but he could tell that someone else had helped him in this endeavor.

Jane was vulnerable long before she arrived here.

"If I were him, I would not leave you alone a moment longer than you wished. I'm glad you are here now, Jane." he says softly.

"Should I go? I do not mean to intrude on your solitude. I simply needed to see you." he says.

Oh that was true. She hadn't had her defenses up when she came here. For a master like him when it came to getting what he wanted this had been easy.

She still didn't know what she wanted. She lifted her head to stare at him. Then she shook her head. "I don't think I want to be alone right now."

She shouldn't even trust him. Part of her is trying to get her to have him leave but she's just so tired of trying to be strong right now. He's allowing her to be herself.

Her judgment isn't the best right now. He is offering her exactly what she needs. And some small part of her is enjoying getting some attention.

Her form of flirting is about to come on out right nw. "Ra's. Are you up for sparring?" She glances towards the large room she set aside as a gym. Owning this building has so many advantages. And her boy language indicates she isn't really thinking about sparring at this point.

Oh this was acceptable. She deposits her spare gun on a counter. She wanted to show she wasn't intending on shooting him after all. But the knife strapped to her ankle would stay there until latter. She wasn't going to be as foolish as to go unarmed, even in her own home where she knew exactly where each hidden weapon was.

Jane has a healthy sense of paranoia. But this was about fun. She lets them into the gym and turns on the lights.

Ra's removes his suit coat and places it on a chair, his eyes quickly flashing to the weapon on the counter. There were several more around the apartment, he knew, some in the obvious places.

"You'll have to show me this 'unpolished' style of yours. I'm certain I could give you a few pointers." Ra's offers.

Jane actually laughed. It sounded not very womanly at all but genuine.

"I learned to fight in bars, mostly. I'm very much a brawler. Formal training outside of fire arms? Just didn't happen. When I got into the business my Dad couldn't get out of bed so he couldn't pass on what he knew." It had been sad to watch. He had been a tough old bastard.

"But I can show you what I know."

Ra's al Ghul has seen this before, many times over the course of centuries, his response is so automatic as to appear casual.

He slides out of the way Jane's attack, sidestepping to her left.

He attempts a shove, trying to unbalance her.

"Your smile is full of mischief. You're a trouble-maker, aren't you?" he asks.

She moves with the shove though. She doesn't try to power through it like others might. She swings a kick that is very well controlled and not like something a self-professed brawler would shove out.

She down plays her skills.

"Oh you have no idea," she crowed with a touch of just pure delight.

She is glad her other leg had been stable. She twisted and set her leg down without trouble. But there is a gleam in her eye now.

He has her attention.

And this time she really throws herself at him. A series of kicks, punches, and what can only be described as her hand jerking out at a point for his throat go out very quickly.

She isn't going slow o easy anymore. This is all stuff she has picked up fighting in bars and on the job.

Pain and experience were her best teachers.

She comes at him and Ra's moves with her, offering little resistance as he blocks her attacks. Punches are blocked and kicks are pushed away, but Ra's seems to /barely/ be able to keep up with the young woman.

One kick finds its way inside his guard, and Jane is rewarded with the sound of out-rushing air, as Ra's is driven back a step, then two.

"We're sparring. I don't want to actually hurt you," she replied.

She manages to block two thirds of what he does. He gets a very lucky sound bow that sends her on her back.

She realizes that she is vulnerable here but knows getting up is a bad plan. She can't move fast enough so her legs are up ready to defend herself from her position. She could keep him away from her directly all night if she had to.

On her back doesn't mean defenseless after all.

"But what purpose does this serve if you don't learn how to defend yourself completely? In early civilization, those who could not stay alive during drills and maneuvers were written off as men who would have died in the field anyway." Ra's says, waiting for her to attack again.

"Now, come at me as though you intend to stop me from doing further harm. Or would you rather prove your young man correct in his assumption that you can't defend yourself without a gun in your hand?" Ra's taunts.

Oh don't push her buttons. Or do because anger flashes in her eyes and she is no longer defending. She leg sweeps at him and is up. This time her much more aggressive side is showing and she's going quicker than before.

A little harder to. This time going for anything that might cause discomfort. Nothing that would kill but there is a sense of warrior woman crankiness coming off of her in waves.

But then she reacts in a way that Robert would recall if he were the man doing this. If he were here he would be the one she kissed with raw hungry need.

But he isn't and it is Ra's al Ghul who is about to discover just how badly Jane needed to connect with someone right now. To feel alive so she could get rid of the memory of being so dead.
