Getting the ducks in a row(Open)
It was still hard to process what had happened. The world was saved! Only no one seemed aware of it. She had been trying so hard to claim she was not a hero. But she had noted absently while gathering things together to go track down some jewels that had gotten stolen that her life was starting to look more and more like a hero's life.

She didn't like that too much. It left her angry because it didn't sit well with how she ran things. She used guns and wasn't about to give them up. She thought for sure that set her apart from the hero crowd. But she was beginning to see that she wasn't exactly the type to avoid doing the right thing. That's why she got along with the Arrows she had met.

Gotham was different though. Searching the whole city for some missing diamonds that had been rumored to be around here filled her days. A whole week of working in the city and she found out something she hadn't known.

Her old man had a building here. So that night had her on the roof as she ate from a pizza box and read things both on her case and the building that was hers to do what she wanted with.

Only there was trouble brewing and she didn't know it until she heard the cock of a gun and was diving for cover intuitively.

"Damn my luck," Jane mutters all the while wishing she knew where her 'partner' was right now. There were people after her now. Just her luck, huh? So she draws her side arm and waits for a breath then takes a shot Damn she missed but with how quite Gotham was tonight someone might have heard that.

Merlyn crosses the rooftops in the Gotham night, following a group of criminals he's been tracking since he arrived in town a few days ago. He believes they've stolen something out of an exhibit out West, a mask from a supposed God, but he hasn't been able to link them together.

When they stop at a random building on the way back to what he believes is their hideout, he's curious, coming to a halt to watch the building from across the street. He notices someone on the rooftop, oblivious to the fact that someone entered the building downstairs, and is content to wait for the crooks to come out so he can deal with them.

When the gunshots start, and he sees the five criminals trying to pin down the lone person on the rooftop, he decides that five on one isn't a fair fight.

He draws his bow, and black arrow, and sights on one of the thugs nearest the woman. He draws in a quick breath and exhales, letting the arrow fly.

If the arrow connects, Jane would hear yelp of mingled surprise and pain as the arrow buries itself in the man's shooting arm, rendering it useless.

One down, four to go. Merlyn fires a line in the direction of the building next to Jane's, hoping to get into better position to back up whoever is being attacked.

She hears that then smiles. It looks like her friend has shown up to give her a hand. She doesn't know that this isn't her friend. But they're connected and the moment she sees Merlyn she'll get it but right now she has no clue.

She takes another breath then fires another shot. She hears a yelp as someone is shot in the shoulder. She doesn't know if it is enough to get them out of the game.

She knows she i still pinned when she tries moving and gets shot at again. They really don't want her to leave.

Merlyn's feet hit the roof of the building next to Jane's and he rolls, curling up to minimize the impact. He comes up from the roll and in one motion, draws another arrow and fires it at the first man he can see.

TWIIP!

Mid-back, center-mass, if it connects. That man is going to be in bad shape for awhile, even if they get the arrow out without crippling him. He hopes that whoever they're trying to kill is worth getting maimed or killed over.

He draws another arrow, and waits to see if he can identify their target.

Whoever she is she is on the move. He took down the one pinning her down on one side so she races like dome kind of jungle cat to take down the next one. She knows he won't see her coming.

She isn't in a uniform. She doesn't look like a hero either. But she pops up right behind one of the other men and clocks him. He goes down with a soft moan and she takes his gun and has him tied up with some zip ties very quickly.

She looks over her shoulder to make sure she is still safe and stoops so the shadows give her cover while she watches the last guy. But she is still watching the area for her 'helper' wanting to make sure this hasn't gotten complicated on her. After all it wouldn't be good if it turned out they were an enemy.

Merlyn listens, and notices that the shots are coming fewer and farther between; these guys probably weren't expecting whoever they were after to have backup, but it also seems like this person has some fighting chops of their own. Good to know.

The last man is looking around his quarry's back up, and Merlyn knows he's got two choices: he can kill this guy outright, and hope this person is okay with it...or he can let them get the glory.

He pulls an arrow, pulls back the bow string, and fires at the last man.

The arrow slams into the steel of the vent right next to the man's head. That ought to keep him focused on anything BUT the person coming to drop him.

Jane doesn't quite crow when the man gets distracted. But she does spring into action. She moves into Merlyn's line of sight as she comes up behind the last guy and puts him into a sleeper hold.

It's a classic take down move. It even works for someone who is much shorter than their other opponent if done at just the right angle.

When the last guy is down she zip ties his hands behind his back then puzzles over what to do next.

"I was really careful not to let the cat out of the bag," she taps her chin as she rolls the man over to get a good look at his face. "Yes. Yes. Had to be you who did the job. Right build. Right skill set. Hmmm. This is interesting."

She leaves the knocked out thief to go check on the others. She is putting together a puzzle in her head. Then she recalls the fact someone has been helping her and the arrows don't look like her friend's. "You can come out if you'd like," she calls out to the night air.

"I don't shoot people on sight, ya know. Just if they take shots at me," she says loud enough for him to hear,

Merlyn doesn't know who this woman is, and granted, it's his first time in America in years, but he knows she's waiting for him. He slings his bow over his shoulder and steps out of the shadows, waving to her from across the rooftop.

"Permission to come aboard your rooftop?" he calls back to her.

She will see that he's dressed something like one of the Arrows, but no domino mask. His costume is black, as opposed green, red or any other color.

He waits for her to give the okay.

She quirks an eyebrow. She has no idea who he is but the motif makes her think of Mia. She won't say a word though about that because she could be wrong.

He's asking for permission? It has her grin for a moment.

"Granted, sailor," she calls with a salutes. She isn't being sarcastic, more like playful. The danger is out of the way so she isn't cranky.

He nods in return, and reaches into his quiver for a particular arrow. When he finds it, he draws and fires the arrow at the wall several yards back and away from her. When the line is set, he gives it a tug to make sure it stays, then begins his hand-by-hand crossing of the roof.

Minutes later, they're face to face, and he offers her something of a smile.

"I was right." he says, looking down at her. He's six feet tall if he's an inch, and her grin causes him to break into a full smile, something he rarely does.

"I'm Jacob King." he says.

She is just barely five foot three so most adults tend to be taller than her. She has to crane her head just a bit to look him in the eye.

"Jane Doe-Smith," she offers honestly. No need to hide anything. "Thanks for the help. I wasn't sure how I was going to get to them."

She crooks an eyebrow at him. "And just what were you right about, King?"

"No problem. It's good you lured them out, because I've been looking for this band of clowns myself. I think they stole a relic from a Shinto Temple in Coast City. I think they're part of a larger ring that's selling these items to private collectors on the Black Market.

I could be wrong, but I don't think I am." he says.

She cocks her eyebrow and he offers her another grin. "That you have beautiful eyes, Miss Smith. I thought that was the case from over there." he says, pointing toward the roof he just came from.

"But now I know, and knowing is half the battle." he finishes.

"You're right. I was hired by a museum they hit in Star city. I tracked down most of what they had. And I followed them here. I think they might be one part of a bigger group but I don't have enough information yet," the short blond informs him.

"Wha..." She blinks then shuts right up blushing. She isn't used to flirting or attention. She has buried herself in her work so the idea of flirting on the job hasn't really occurred to her. It should have since it's a great tactic for getting information but she can't even begin to guess at this guy's motives right now.

Simply put, he caught her off guard.

"Oh. You're...a Private Investigator? Well, looks like my luck just improved. I do know that Star City was hit, too. Are you aware of the a missing item called the Mask of Teufeltiger? That's basically what his name translates to in English, because the Japanese name is bit more...lofty." he says.

He notes the blushing and senses a momentary opening.

"You hungry? I could some food and a beer. Maybe we could talk a little more about this over dinner?" he asks.

"So it's not isolated," she says with a satisfied look passing over her face. She was right. "And yes actually. I had pictures of it and had almost tracked it down today."

She could mention the pizza she lost because of the gunfire. But she didn't. She was just caught off guard again.

"Sure." Oh she is really off guard. She normally wouldn't do this.

"All right. I'd need to change before we could go, but that won't take long. What are you in the mood for?" he asks.

Is that pizza he smells? He's probably just imagining it.

"And if we're lucky, we can find that mask and get it back where it belongs. It's supposed to have some kind of 'mystic power' nonsense to it, but there are people out there who actually believe in that sort of thing." he says.

She blushes again but offers him a small nod picking up a folder and her gun goes back into a shoulder holster. It isn't visible under her jacket really but someone with a well trained eye should notice it.

"Sounds good. Meet you there in one hour?" he offers. Before she can answer, he runs for the edge of the roof and leaps off, heading back across the street. The flat he's staying is twenty minutes from here at a good run, but dressing, showering and such will take a little longer.

"Jacob" is a few minutes late as the cab pulls up to the restaurant. He pays the driver, and emerges, dressed in a black shirt, blue jeans and black boots. He is also wearing a black leather jacket.

Jacob will smile when he sees her, and hold the door for her to enter.

"So, how exactly did you get involved in the detective business, Miss Smith?" he asks.

She had changed shirts then opted to also change into a skirt since she didn't wear them that often since pants were more her style. She had ended up staying in the building that she apparently owned while he was working. It wasn't comfortable but since apparently the place still had utilities paid for up until the end of this year there was no reason to put it to waste.

She had walked down to the little sushi place enjoying the night air. She had waited for him and had managed to get control of herself in the meantime. That nearly went away when she caught a look of what he was in but she won that small fight with herself. She was not going to turn into a stammering blushing mess.

She offers Jacob a smile. "You can call me Jane. And I guess you could say I fell into a family business," she answers. "My Dad taught me everything he knew."

He admits to himself that she cuts an impressive figure in anything she's wearing, for future reference.

"You look great." he says, as they enter.

"Okay, Jane, but only if you call me Jake." he counters. He listens to her talk about how she learned from her father, and he notes to himself that she's lucky to have that.

"That's pretty cool. So, you and your father are close?" he asks her, before catching himself.

"I apologize. That's none of my business at all. But I will say he must be damn good at what he does, from the way I saw you handle yourself on the roof. Most people wouldn't have kept their composure the way you did, much less take down their attacks while outnumbered. You've got some real chops, Jane." he says.

When the waitress comes around, Jake waits for Jane to order, then orders a water and a beer each for them.

"Jake it is then," she replies not wanting to be called Miss Smith by him. It sounded too professional. "Thanks."

It was oddly nice to know what he thought. She really wasn't used to wanting to look good for anyone so this was new.

"He was one of the best at what he did," she agrees. "He wasn't the kind of guy to work on the police force either. He said you did less paper work that way. I don't exactly agree, I still have lots of stuff to file if I gotta bring stuff to their attention."

She places her order picking out a few local sounding rolls and waits until the waitress is gone before she continues. "I wasn't always this cool under pressure. You learn on the job. It's a very sink or swim kind of situation."

"Believe me, I hear you on the whole trial-by-fire thing. Sometimes, you really can't learn any other way. No matter how many scenarios you can dream up, or how well you plan things, learning to adjust on the move is the greatest skill anyone can develop." he says, nodding.

"Although, a partner might make a bunch of thugs rethink trying to jump you when you're alone." he quips.

"Actually I'm from Star City originally. Gotham was apparently my Dad's other home base. I was thinking of setting up shop here to be honest. The building felt like home," she confesses.

She hasn't had a nightmare all week. She doesn't know if it is from working to the bone or because the place just has echos of her adopted father's past all through it.

"I'm on the move often though. Never get to just relax. Someone always needs me to look into something." But she loves it.

"You're from Star City? I hear it's nice there, by the water and such. I keep thinking about heading out there some time. You should set me up with a place or two to visit in case I go." he says. He will be seeing Star City eventually, but not until he's finished in Gotham.

He smiles as she says she's usually on the move. "Wanderlust sets in and it gets hard to shake. If you like it here, Jane, you should enjoy it. Besides, job security in this day and age is at a premium. You look like you're making the most of it."

"This is my first time back in the states in years, so I'm still getting familiar with the lay of the land." he says, as the waitress brings the beers and water to them. He slides one across the table to Jane.

She laughs shaking her head. "I'm self-employed. So long as people are willing to let me do the leg work for them in whatever they need sniffed out, I'm golden. Gives me a lot of freedom too."

"Oh yeah? I can give you some hints at what's good in Star City then," she offers simply. She raises her beer when he does.

They're awesome." he says with a grin, taking pull from his beer. She'll note, that outside of raising his glass, giving a nod, or smiling, he doesn't seem to move at all. He doesn't fidget, and his attention seems to be focused completely on her.

She is blushing gain. He keeps throwing her off her game when he compliments her and given how focused he seems, she wonders if that's the point. He feels dangerous but not necessarily to her.

"I'm used to the crowds. I don't remember anywhere but the city," she says with a half smile. She won't admit to him it is because her mind is only filled with ten whole years of memories. She barely shared that with Mia.

"A few. This one place is actually called 'I love sushi'. Despite the goofy tourist name it's awesome. The people are friendly and it's calm there. Also has the best imported beer."

"Good sushi and imported beer? Sign me up!"he says animatedly with a short laugh. "It sounds like a good place, and I'll definitely check it out when I get there."

Their food arrives, and he waits until she begins eating to start on his own. He will listen to anything she has to say before going into questions about the case, in earnest.

"So, you found these guys tonight. I have reason to believe they're low men for an American branch of the Yakuza that fences stolen goods. Tekiya of the Yamaguchi-gumi family. They're the largest known branch of the Yakuza, and the dirt they deal in is deep and varied.

What I haven't figured out is whether they're procuring the mask, or trying to sell it. It's supposed to be cursed, from what I understand." he says.

"If I knew the history of the mask I could make a guess," Jane says with a slight frown.

"And you're right. They would have to be Yakuza. They use the same methods for stealing what they want. I encountered them before. Oh, about three years ago. Not important," she says rambling and fiddling with the label on her bottle.

"It's more likely they're selling everything though. Every other piece they snatched up has made a reappearance on the Black Market. If it doesn't show up that would mean it's worth more or the rumors of an under ground auction I've been hearing about are true. Don't relish the idea of that. I wouldn't be able to get in easily."

"The Yakuza and I have issues. I respect anyone that manages to defy them and live to tell the tale." he says. He reaches into his coat pocket and brings forth a few pieces of parchment.

"If you can read Japanese, these might help you." he says. "If you can't..."

He pulls out a few pieces of folded notebook paper.

"...these are my translations of what the parchment says. It's information on Teufeltiger's Mask. Maybe there's something in here you might find that I didn't." he says.

"An underground auction would be a bad thing indeed. I know of at least one group interested in it, a cult called the Ten Thousand Demons. They're the type that believes the mask has mystic power." he says.

She reads quickly looking for anything she might know of or understand.

"How old is Tekiya? Does he have a son?" She is quick about this because she just noticed something that has her very on edge.

Then she realizes he is worried about her. "It's nothing. Not you anyways. I have lots of old ghosts that get in the way. You've been great."

"Oh. I just saw that you became a little nervous when I spoke of the Yakuza. I just didn't want you to feel like I was prying into your life." he says.

He smiles genuinely when she says he's been great to her. Normally, another persons opinion of him doesn't matter, but he's oddly contented that she might be enjoying his company.

She'll quickly read of the Mask of Teufeltiger (or the Thunderous Guardian Trickster of The Thousand Hells) is believed to allow the use to summon demons to command, as well allows the person wearing it to perfectly impersonate anyone they have knowledge of when worn.

"I don't know if Tekiya has a son, but I wouldn't put it past him. He's an older man...early to mid-fifties, maybe? I've had trouble getting closer. It's more of a title than anything, but the Yakuza keep the names of their higher-ups shrouded in secrecy. Did you see something?" he asks her.

"At first I did. Maybe he's afraid of a coupe? Needs an extra edge against someone getting too big for their britches?" She wrinkles her nose.

"No. That wouldn't make sense. There's no way to know if the demon couldn't turn on him. I wouldn't risk it in his place. If he was older with not much to loose, I' get it. I think the best bet would be to try the auction."

"Not unless he thinks he's got a way to control it. Again, I really don't know." he says.

"The auction sounds like a good idea. The question then becomes: How do we get in? This sort of thing would take a disgusting amount of money to get into...and they gouge foreigners like you wouldn't believe.

And I'm only half-Japanese, so I'm pratically worthless towards getting us in the front door." he says.

...then goes back to his food with a devilish grin.

"Well, I'll leave the part on the location to you, Jane. You get it, and I'll be there watch your back." he says.

Jane doesn't quite chuckle but she looks somewhat amused by being told what to do. "Don't worry so much. I've done this before. Well. Maybe not exactly this but.... You know what I mean."

She's gone into places she shouldn't have before. And she has worked with others before. Now so long as she doesn't get double crossed in the end, she'll be a happy camper. To be safe though she plans on wearing a bullet proof vest.
