Ms. Torres, you've got a lovely daughter.
The zombies started coming back to life. Intact. Wow. That was.... way more awesome than anything he was hopingfor here. He vaguely remembered something like that from the papers, but he'd thought Uncle Jed was just going with a forcibly Happy Ever After as he read.

He went looking for Zoe in the mess and chaos, blood still running down his cheek.

"I'll have to write a new lecture because I can see you've managed to make a friend," Michelle shot back, laughing softly. "I'm sure your grandmother wants to know that you're happy, GK."

"I know, I know. Awesome. Now we can have tea and actually-not-toast."

"If you use teabags. Otherwise you're just going to have to use a teabag." She took down a container from another cupboard to get individually wrapped teabags. "Your usual, Mom?"

"Yes, thank you. While you tell Zoe she's an autumn, you said? That she's an autumn, you can tell her of the joys of using the oven for something other than warming her socks in the winter."

"I... can do teabags. Whatever you've got is fine. And yes. An autumn. And I wouldn't want to pressure, but I do pretty decent cupcakes if you want me to show you sometime, Zoe."

"Do I look like Betty Crocker or Mrs. Fields?" Zoe dropped tea bags in three cups and poured the steaming water in. "I'm fine with my skill level in the kitchen, and with my wardrobe. It works for me."

"Pay no attention to the grumpy girl, GK," Michelle laughed. "She sounds tough but I have hope."

"Hey, I include cupcakes among basic survival skills, but that's just me. ...On the other end of the spectrum, would you want to check out opening day at Papp Stadium? I promise my being a Rockets fan is not exclusively about how they look in their uniforms."

She paused in handing her mother a cup of tea with a spoon. Star City /did/ have a stadium. She'd never been there. Sports weren't her thing.

Her mother gave her one of those significant looks and nodded to GK's back.

"Are they worth looking at in their uniforms? That would be the only reason I'd go."

"Extremely worth looking at. Plus, the pitcher is, admittedly, not the world's finest, so I'm sure you'll have an interesting critique, having done it a little yourself once."

"Zoe, you are not allowed to throw peanuts at the players," Michelle warned, recognizing a certain gleam in Zoe's eyes. "You should go and enjoy yourself."

"Both sides or just the Rockets?" Zoe asked. "Sounds like a good afternoon." Then a few hours of patrolling afterward and it would be a perfect day.

"That depends whether the umpire is watching," GK says, giggling. "Awesome. And while I'm getting to mark my calendar, Ms. Torres, do you like Jacobean revenge tragedies?"

"I can't say I've seen any, GK. You're speaking of a theater play? I love to go to plays and movies." She rarely had the time but she adored movies and plays.

"Yes, Ma'am. Kind a like Shakespeare, but a bit heavier on the political backstabbing. And literal backstabbing. Just... lots of stabbing. We're doing Webster's The White Devil next month, and I've worked out some great fake blood effects, and some of the character designs have been really fun and.... Mom and Uncle Jed aren't sure if they can make it down. Timing and all."

"We would be delighted to step in and act as your cheering section. Perhaps we can make an evening of it, Zoe. Dinner together and the play. We haven't had a night out in a long time." She turned a beaming smile on GK. "Afterward we could have dessert if you'd like to join us, GK. If you're free, of course."

Zoe had to smile at Michelle's enthusiasm. Mom didn't get out much. She'd sit through a lot worse if it made her happy. "Sounds like a plan, then. I'll check with my assistant to clear my calendar."

She laughed when Michelle swatted her arm for her sass. "That smells good, GK."
