Over My Head
If someone were to ask Dinadan Palmer what his favorite part of the week was, he’d tell them Friday afternoon; specifically late Friday afternoon when the school week is over and he’s finished his weapons’ training for the day, and the weekend stretches out glorious and free ahead of him. It’s exactly that time now, and he feels at ease with his world.

He weaves a little as he walks to his bedroom, since he hasn’t quite mastered the art of walking and towel-drying his hair at the same time, but he doesn’t knock into anything or trip over his own feet (today), so it doesn’t really matter. He reaches his bedroom and tosses the towel into his laundry hamper, flicking on the radio for some music while he gets dressed and makes plans for his freedom.

This is ultimately why Dinadan is playing air-guitar in his underwear when Henry puts his plan into action.

Dinadan nods. "We definitely don't have that kind of variety here. Do you eat out a lot?"

He idly scans through his menu, but he knows that he's just going to go with his usual. This night's already so uncustomary that he wants something familiar just to center himself.

Petra finds herself the chicken parm as she nods. "Constantly. I can cook fine, but there's just so many places to try, how can I resist?"

One hand discretely reaches under the table to free a sandal from its straps. She extends her leg again and gives him a playful, but not quite naughty, stroke along his ankle.

"It's not something I enjoy either," Dinadan says, wrinkling his nose. "On the other hand, baking is awesome. It's tasty chemistry! There's pretty much nothing wrong with that."

It takes him a moment to figure out what's touching his ankle under the table. Fortunately, he does figure it out before he actually bends over to check. He stiffens a bit, then forces himself to relax. Ankle's fine. He can handle ankle.

"Tasty chemistry, hm? I think bartending falls under that too. I've been taking courses in it so I can have more options for shifts to work at Warriors." Petra smiles.

She keeps the footsie simple, trailing a toe around his ankle where his foot goes into his shoe.

"I thought you needed to be of the legal drinking age to serve alcohol," Dinadan says, tilting his head to the side. "Do you just need to be eighteen?"

He considers moving his foot away for a moment, but then decides to leave it where it is. She's still keeping it well below the knees, after all.

"Yep, eighteen makes the cut. And it's not like I can't get my drink on if I feel like it. I'm no lush though."

Petra tilts her head. "You okay so far?" She shifts her foot a bit further up his calf to make her reference clear.

"It must be weird being here with the twenty-one drinking age, being as well-traveled as you are," Dinadan says. He knows most countries have the drinking age set at eighteen or lower, if they've got one at all.

His breathing stutters a bit when her foot moves up higher. "Long as it stays below the knees, I think I'm good," he says, this time with only a faint squeak to his voice.

"Yeah, this country's a little uptight in some ways, but I love it here. No hurry to get away indefinitely, but I'm looking forward to my next vacation as well." Petra nods.

She smiles and nods again at the foot assessment. "You're really cute. Can't believe no girl's gotten their claws in you before." She pauses. "Oh... sorry, didn't mean to presume."

"Oh definitely," Dinadan agrees, taking a sip of his water. "It always takes me a couple days to adjust properly, but I always like coming back here."

He blushes again, scratching the back of his neck. "No, I mean, I don't date a lot. Most of my dates were more political play-dates than actual date-dates. All we've got to do is find each other reasonably entertaining, and I can do that with just stories about Ivy Town."

"Political?" That gets her curiosity up. "Howso?"

She smirks as he comes to a close. "Well, I hope you find me at least 'reasonably' entertaining. I certainly find you interesting enough." She leans forward, resting her chin on a palm.

"How much did Henry tell you about me when he set this up?" Dinadan asks. He gets the feeling that the answer is going to be "not much", but if Henry did mention something, Dinadan doesn't want to repeat it.

"Yes, I do!" he says. "Didn't mean to imply that I found you boring at all!"

"Just that he had a cute nice friend who doesn't get out enough, and asked if I would mind terribly showing him a good time." Petra smiles as she gives him the quick version.

She laughs, sitting back and twirling her hair a bit, keeping eye contact. "Didn't think that for a minute, sweetie. Glad you're finding me so..." the foot goes up his calf again, but still below the knee. "...entertaining."

"That's about what I thought he might have said," Dinadan says. He sighs and thinks a moment, then double-checks that no one's listening before leaning in. "Basically, I'm the crowned prince of a small nation in the Amazon rain forest in Brazil. And when I say 'small', I mean that the people don't get more than six inches high." He shrugs and smiles self-deprecatingly. "I'm mostly just down there for summers and other vacations, because dad wanted me to get a proper education, but you can see how that would do weird things to my dating life."

He squirms a little in his seat and tries to hide behind his water glass for a moment, but he still doesn't move his leg away.

Petra blinks, leaning in as well. "That's awesome. Never met a prince before" The response would have been a bit louder, but he was clearly trying to keep things quiet. She then gets a mischievous grin and gives him a quick kiss on the lips while he's so close. No tongue, but not quite chaste either.

She sits back, giggling lightly. "Never kissed a prince before either."

Dinadan's expression is akin to that of a rabbit whose fur was just ruffled by the wind of a passing truck. The part of his brain that isn't rebooting notes that being unexpectedly smooched is a little less disconcerting than being informed that he is getting laid tonight, but more disconcerting than being boobsquished. He's not entirely sure if he's turning orange from blushing yet, but his face definitely feels orange.

"Er. What?"

Petra just sips her water and props her head up on a hand, smiling at him.

"You're so cute." She flashes a grin at him.

Yep, definitely orange.

Dinadan squeaks a 'thank you' in reply, because the rules of etiquette do stick, and focuses on resuming actual conversation. What had they been talking about again?

...Oh yeah, how he hasn't dated much. Time to change the subject!

Fortunately, the waitress appears to take their orders, so he has a few extra moments to recover his brain.

Petra orders herself some cheesy garlic bread (mints are in her bag), and fresh mozzarella with bruschetta. She has a thing for finger foods.

She certainly seems content enough though. It's a relaxed content, too. Not smug.

Dinadan goes with his usual goat cheese flan, and tries to figure out if he should be continuously crunching on mints in case she kisses him again, or if it's acceptable to wait until the end of the meal.

"So, where's your favorite place to visit?" he asks when the waitress leaves with their orders. Safe topic, and he's definitely gathered that Petra's well-traveled.

Petra thinks for a moment, running her tongue along her upper lip slightly; a personal tic of hers.

"Either Sydney or Toronto. Australia has great surfing, and Toronto has all of New York's good points with not nearly as much crowds, and a better smell."

She folds her arms on the table and leans forward a bit, enjoying the conversation. "How about you? Any other stops on the world tour between here and the rain forest?"

"I don't think I could ever visit Australia," Dinadan says. "It seems like it's right up there with super villain lairs in the top ten list of places where everything wants to and can kill you. Amazon rain forest coming in third, of course."

He thinks for a moment or two, then shakes his head. "I don't really travel that much, aside from there and back. And even then, we usually do it by phone line. Way faster -- terrifying, but faster."

Petra laughs out loud. "Din! Australia is not a giant super-villain lair. Come with me during their summer sometime, and I'll protect you, if you want." She's still giggling.

"Travel's the best though. I wouldn't be half as awesome as I am now if I didn't get to see and do and try so much."

"I don't need to be protected," Dinadan objects. "I've survived five years and eleven summers-and-other-vacations in the Amazon, twelve years of being best friends with Henry, and my whole life as a you-know-what. I'm good at not dying."

He might be able to manage it. He'd have to figure out a way to get his assignments early from his teachers, and of course get his dad's permission, but...

Wait, why is he even thinking about going to the other side of the planet with a girl he's just met?

"It sounds like it. I like having a home base to come back to, though."

Petra laughs. "I really like the fact that your sliding scale of threats goes 'friends with Henry' and THEN the 'you-know-what'."

She shrugs. "I like having my own place here, so I guess I can understand that a little. I'm fine with not doing any more major moves constantly, but I just need to keep seeing the world."

"'Friends with Henry' gets me into some of my more hilarious-in-hindsight scrapes," Dinadan says with an embarrassed grin. "He's a veritable font of 'it seemed like a good idea at the time'."

He chews thoughtfully on his lower lip. "I can understand that. It's just not my bag, though. I probably should make an effort to try and see some places before I settle in for good, but my natural inclination is to stick to my comfort zones."
