The old apartment buildings in the Triangle had a disadvantage over the new ones in Star City. The locks were either broken or so close they only needed a good body nudge to force them.

She led Angie through the back door and up five flights of stairs to the roof, leaving the iffy elevator to the residents. Close to dusk, people were already inside out of the cold and oblivious by choice to what was going on outside their front doors.

From the roof, they went down the fire escape to the empty apartment over Riviera's. The tiny one bedroom space was empty of furniture and basic appliances, the floor covered in filthy carpet that began life in an avocado color. An indescribable odor floated out of the minuscule bathroom.
