Some Things Never Change
Ryan had to say this dimension almost that future place seem less crazy but that one still took the prize in his book. Still there was one thing he knew had to be the same in this verse just like in any of the others he had been too. Criminals still sometimes needed to be beaten up and Ryan did have to admit there was nothing like beating up a criminal to get your mind off things and have some fun.

After spending most of the day pouring through the history of this world which he now felt he was fairly knowledgeable about he really wanted to do that. After talking to some of the locals to the world he found out a few places that he could go to to do just that. After a little bit of looking over the suggestions he used a teleporter to head over to Keystone City. It sounded like a nice place for someone new to this dimension to go and do just that.

After arriving there he did some running along the roof to get to know the city a little more personally before he started looking around to see if there was anything he could do to help people out that evening.

“I’m very sorry to hear that,” Ryan says sincerely and catching the meaning, “I kind of know what that’s like my dad has passed away a few times it’s rather complicated.”

He really felt bad about that kind of stuff happening to someone gorgeous or otherwise. Though being gorgeous did make him feel a bit more sorry about it.

“Sadly isn’t that always the case,” Ryan says knowing a bit about what was going on here having read up on the current events.

"Your dad has passed away more than once?" she asks, a little confused.

"That has to suck. How do you deal with it?" she asks.

“It’s a rather complicated situation but yeah,” Ryan says, “I can barely keep it all together so I’d rather not confuse you with the details.”

“Talking about it helped and I had good friends I could rely on for support and friends of the family.” Even if his dad's deaths never seemed to stick for more than a month before Khonshu would just bring him back under the light of the full moon.

“What happened with your mom, if you don’t mind me asking,” Ryan says.

Mitzi looks away for a moment, not certain she wants to talk about what happened with Annie, because the grief is still very fresh. Most days, she can fake until she makes it, pretending that she's not in any pain at all.

That usually lasts until she wakes up in the middle of the night, unsure of where she is until everything comes back to her. She's not at home with Annie and Annie's not going to come and harass her out of bed in the morning.

Annie's not going to be there ever again.

"She died only a couple of months ago. Our apartment caught fire in the middle of the night. I was asleep and she was in the living room, I guess. Mom drank a lot, so she often came and went, woke and slept as she wanted." Mitzi says.

"I...got lucky and woke up, but there was already smoke in my room by the time I got to the door. I broke the window and climbed out and I...I just assumed she'd be out there waiting for me.

Everyone else in the building got out, but when I looked around, I didn't see her. No one saw her get out. I kept hoping that maybe she was out at the store or at the bar, but deep down, I /knew/ she didn't get out.

The firemen confirmed it later." Mitzi says, her voice breaking. She was /not/ going to cry in front of this guy, but Ryan will still see a couple of tears.

"The same night, my friend Jai disappeared. No one saw him for weeks until recently. They found his body in Africa. Someone...someone killed him. And yet people like the guy who attacked me get to live to hurt people every day and I just don't get it, Ryan?

Why?" Mitzi asks.

Ryan notices the pain in her voice and the couple tears rolling down her cheeks. She had been through a lot recently it was kind of amazing she was holding up as well as she was.

Knowing and wanting to do something he reaches across the table to hold one of her hands. He then looks her in the eyes with his grey ones before saying, “I don’t know why that happens. One of life’s great mysteries. People a heck of a lot smarter than me will be debating why that is till the end of time and even then they probably won’t be able to come up with a good answer.

But what I do know is that you can’t let yourself drowned in all the bad stuff. You’re too pretty and nice for stuff like that to keep happening to you. I know you probably don’t want to right now but at some point you just need to let yourself breakdown and let it all out to someone. Sure maybe they won’t know what to do but at least it’s all out there and not inside slowly killing you.”

“If there’s anything I could do to help or make you feel a bit better just let me know and I’ll see if I can do that, ok,” Ryan says giving her a little smile.

Mitzi offers him a sad smile.

"You're...kinda helping already. I can talk to my friends about this, but...they're all dealing with their own pain and problems and it's not fair of me to complain when the rest of them are handling things." she says, taking a second to wipe her eyes.

Her other hand is still holding Ryan's as she looks at him.

"You're pretty awesome, Ryan. I wish I knew more guys like you. Jai was pretty awesome, too.

Which means you probably have a girlfriend, right?" she asks.

“Well I’m glad to be of help,” Ryan said still with a small smile on his face.

“Thanks your pretty awesome too,” Ryan says, “Actually no I don’t have a girlfriend though with the traveling I’ve been doing of late it would have been hard to do anyways.”

Explaining the whole interdimensional traveling thing would be kind of hard and he wasn’t sure he wanted to do that just yet.

Though he probably should do that soon, he rather liked Mitzi and didn’t want to give her the wrong impression because it wasn’t like he was staying here and he wasn’t even sure how long he would be here.

"Oh, you like to travel? Where have you been?" she asks, suddenly very interested and animated.

"I love the idea of seeing new places. If I had the money, I'd go to Egypt. Cairo is supposed to be an amazing city, especially at night." she says.

Most girls wanted to go to Paris or Rome, and Mitzi did, too, but Egypt was a favorite dream destination of hers.

"I've wanted to go since I was eight and I saw it on National Geographic." she admits sheepishly.

“Yeah Cairo is a really neat city,” Ryan says, “Egypt in general thought is amazing.”

Ryan had been to Egypt a few times with his mom due to her work in Egyptology.

“National Geographic does have a habit of making people want to go to really cool places,” Ryan says.

“I haven’t exactly been doing that type of traveling though,” He explains, “It’s kind of been more interdimensional so when I said I wasn’t from around here it might have been a bit of an understatement.”

"Okay, maybe I misunderstood you again. You said interdimensional, right? Are you from the future?" she asks. Mitzi not stupid, but she's never met anyone who's done it, like most people.

The waitress brings their food and smiles at the two of them, but Mitzi waits for her to leave before gesturing for Ryan to continue.

Damn, she was going to have to let go of his hand to eat, wasn't she?

"What's it like where you're from?" she asks.

Ryan waited till the waitress was out of earshot so she would not think they were both nuts. Though then again you kind of have to be a little bit of some kind of crazy to want to do the whole superhero thing.

“Yes I said interdimensional,” Ryan says, “Though I’d say my world and your world are roughly at the same point in time so no I’m not from the future.”

Damn that burger smells really good, Ryan thought. But he also knew he had to explain this and really could leave someone hanging like that.

“The world I’m from is a lot like your but at the same time really different,” Ryan explains, “We have places like New York City, London, and Hong Kong, but we don’t have a Keystone City, Metropolis, or Gotham.

We got heroes and teams like that but they aren’t really all that a like. Well Deadpool from my world does from what I read when I got here remind me a bit of Deathstroke from yours a bit.

There’s some small changes in history too like some of the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt differ in some cases.

Also on my world people aren’t always hero friendly and have a tendency to get suspicious about them and what their motives are and can get downright nasty about it.

I could probably go into more detail about stuff if you like.”

"How about we eat first, and then we talk about it more?" she suggests, giving him a smile as she chewed over what he'd told her.

It sounded unbelievable, but then, in a world of people who could literally move faster than a speeding bullet and the like, how could she rule out what Ryan was telling her?

"I've only heard of Deathstroke in quiet whispers, but I don't know anything about him." she says, eating a fry.

"How long have you been doing...this?" she asks, referring to the whole heroing bit.

"Sure eating sounds like a good idea to me," Ryan says.

He really hoped this whole other dimensional thing wouldn't scare her off as he was rather having fun.

"I only know about him from what I read in the justice league archives," Ryan says.

"I've been doing this whole heroing thing for over a year now though I've been doing training and stuff since I was six."

"Wow, that's pretty cool. I got into this whole thing by accident. I haven't always been a good girl." she smiles.

"Actually, I was a bad one for awhile, before I met a few nice people like you. They showed me that I didn't have to do bad things to be a worthwhile person and I've been trying to be good ever since." Mitzi says.

"That type of thing happens I can think of a couple of people in my universe who were like that," Ryan says between mouthfuls of burger.

"Still it's always good to hear about someone else who did that. You do seem like a very nice girl to me," He says.

"That's only because you don't know me very well." Mitzi says somewhat coyly.

"You said earlier that people where you're from aren't always friendly to hero-types. That sounds pretty difficult to live with. I haven't really had to deal with that here. I get free muffins from a baker I saved recently. I told him he didn't have to, but he said he'd be offended if I didn't, so I do." she says.

"How do you stay motivated to help people when people don't want you to?" she asks.

"Well is there anything else I should know about how naughty or nice you are," Ryan asks back.

"It can be but most of them are just scared or ignorant," Ryan says,"Some people can be rather nice but they tend to be a bit more in the know than most. Generally we got when you got when you helped that lady earlier a running thank you. But I don't think anyone would offer free food like that."

"To be honest I know I'm better off with this stuff than some. There's a guy who used to do a lot of heroing in New York Spider-man who was often the press's whipping boy about thing and then there's the x-men and the mutants who basically are feared for the powers in a racist nature because they are generically born different. So I just don't get many thank you is all."

"You should know that I go back and forth between the two." Mitzi teased.

She listens to his story about this Spider-Man and thinks that this guy must be the unluckiest guy in the whole world, at least that she's ever heard of.

"So...is he an actual spider? Not that there's anything wrong with that, and all. Just asking.

And it sounds really mean to call people who are born different. Most people with abilities here are called meta-humans. They're just humans with a little extra added to them, but they aren't monsters or anything. I wasn't around when Superman first came out to everyone, but I hear it was like a parade. The world just embraced him right away. A few people didn't like him, but I think he won everyone over in the end." Mitzi says.

"Your world sounds kind of harsh, after awhile." she says.

"Oh really is there anything particularly naughty that I should look out for or would you just rather surprise me," Ryan says playing back.

"From what my dad told me no but his powers do seem to be derived from spiders," Ryan says, "He also likes to wisecrack a lot too."

"Not sure what's up with that but people are getting a lot more nervous about this stuff since Mutants are now making up a percent of the population now. I guess people are a lot less trusting in my world," Ryan says.

"I'm not really sure what that is but it does seem to be true."

"Surprises are the best part of life, Ryan...mostly. If I tell you what's going to happen, you won't appreciate it as much." she says, chuckles.

"I'm sorry, though. I shouldn't be ragging on your world because it's different. You're obviously a good person, so it can't be all bad. I just hope that people come to trust you like people trust the heroes here." Mitzi says.

"Speaking of...how long are you here for? Do you think maybe we could do this again?" she asks.

"Very true surprise can be a lot of fun or at the very least test out your reaction times. But I'm an optimist so I lean towards the fun option more," Ryan says with a smirk.

"No that's OK. It's definitely an issue in my world that really needs address though how is something that is not easy to solve. But there are definitly good people in my world that take the risk of trusting and helping heroes even when they don't have to or is at a personal risk to themselves," Ryan says. Dectective Flint easily comes to mind for someone who doesn't have to have helped or worked with his dad but did so anyways.

"I can honestly say I have no idea how long I will be here. Could be a month, could be till tonight, I really don't know," Ryan says, "I would definitely like to do this again but I say lets take advantage of this while I'm here and have as much fun as we can while we can."

"Well, seize the moment and all, as they say." Mitzi says.

And then, without warning, she leans in and kisses him quickly.

"By the way, thanks, Hero." she grins, and goes back to her food.

"So, how about you show me some of those moves you used earlier. I could use the pointers so that I don't need to get bailed out next time." Mitzi says.

“You certainly are full of surprises,” Ryan says with a grin having kissed her back during the brief kiss.

“No problem very glad to have helped.”

“Sure that sounds like a good plan to me,” Ryan says, “I can teach you a couple basic things that would definitely be sure to help. Do you have any suggestions for where might be good to do that.”
