Some Things Never Change
Ryan had to say this dimension almost that future place seem less crazy but that one still took the prize in his book. Still there was one thing he knew had to be the same in this verse just like in any of the others he had been too. Criminals still sometimes needed to be beaten up and Ryan did have to admit there was nothing like beating up a criminal to get your mind off things and have some fun.

After spending most of the day pouring through the history of this world which he now felt he was fairly knowledgeable about he really wanted to do that. After talking to some of the locals to the world he found out a few places that he could go to to do just that. After a little bit of looking over the suggestions he used a teleporter to head over to Keystone City. It sounded like a nice place for someone new to this dimension to go and do just that.

After arriving there he did some running along the roof to get to know the city a little more personally before he started looking around to see if there was anything he could do to help people out that evening.

Ryan was already getting himself on top of the railing of the fire escape when he saw that Mitzi was about to use his attack to escape and get a rather nice hit in there herself.

He then jump off the railing doing a forward somersault in the air before bringing his outstretched booted foot down on the huddled over muggers head slamming it hard face first into the ground.

Ryan’s own landing was a little bit rough but nothing he couldn’t handle. While he wasn’t sure yet he had a fairly reasonable guess that the mugger was now down for the count but for now he was going to air on the side of caution.

“You ok,” Ryan called over to Mitzi.

Mitzi couldn't believe her eyes. Not only could this guy fight as well, or maybe better, than anyone she'd seen doing it...but he was smoking hot, too.

It took her a minute to find her voice as she stared at Ryan.

"Um, yeah. I'm good. Are you okay?" she asks, pushing her hair out of her face.

Stupid, of /course/ he's okay. He just saved /you/ from getting killed without breaking a sweat.

"Thank you for the save." she says.

"I thought I was pretty familiar with everyone on the beat around here. Did I miss when you showed up?" she asks, trying to figure out who this guy is. Maybe Iris knows him, or one of the other girls.

“That’s good to hear. I’m fine too, thanks for asking,” Ryan said.

Most people seem to think that if you do the hero thing you can jump down a couple stories or get punched through a few brick walls and be perfectly fine or at least able to just walk it off. Granted he probably could walk those off or at least pretend to and just ignore it but it did still hurt.

“It was no trouble at all,” Ryan said, “Always like giving people a hand who seem to have gotten themselves in a bit over their heads if I can, especially when they were doing that to help someone else out and are very pretty.”

He could certainly think of a few times off the top of his heads where he would have liked some help like that. Normally hit on people he saved even if it was only mildly so but he probably wasn’t going to be around here too long and she was damn good looking.

“Didn’t really miss much, not really from around here so if you actually had heard of me it would be pretty weird. I was in the area and figured I might as well do a patrol, guess that was a good thing.”

Did he just say I was pretty?

"Well, it's good you came along when you did. You were amazing. I'm still not sure if what I saw was magic or just plain awesome." she gushes.

"Can I ask the name of the guy who saved me? You can call me..."

Uh-oh. What should she call herself? She couldn't just tell him her real name.

At that moment, she remembers something Annie said to her years ago.

I swear, Mitzi, you can be a walking calamity at times.

"I'm Calamity." Mitzi says.

“Just plain awesome,” Ryan says, “I don’t have any powers or anything so it’s all skill.”

Ryan had never really used a superhero name. He probably should spend some time brainstorming to think one up at some point.

“You can call me Ryan,” He says figuring he was from another dimension and probably wouldn’t be staying here long anyways so what could it hurt if he told one person his first name. It wasn’t like it was too uncommon or anything.

“It’s nice to meet Calamity,” He said.

"Okay, call me Mitzi. It's nice to meet you, too, Ryan." she says, smiling at him.

"That's amazing that you can do all of that with no powers. I wish I could do the same, but if I could, I wouldn't have run into you. Could I maybe, buy you a burger to say thank you?" she asks.

“Mitzi that’s a pretty name,” Ryan said returning the smile.

“A burger sounds great,” he says, “But you don’t have to do anything to thank me, if you don’t want too.”

He didn’t want to have dinner with a pretty girl over her feeling obligated because he had saved her.

“You know I probably could teach you a couple simple things that might help you get out of those types of jams in the future.”

"Uh, hello? You just saved my life. The least I can do is treat you to the best burger stand in the country for it. Come on, Ryan. You sound like you're trying to turn down a pretty girl and that's hot very heroic." Mitzi teases, smiling at him.

"It's just down the block and I promise not to make you jump off of any more buildings for at least an hour." she grins.

She looks at him a little curiously when he offers to show her a couple of moves.

"Really? You'd do that? Well, now I /really/ would like you to have a burger with me. Then we can pick a rooftop or something and try it out." she says.

“No I wasn’t turning you down just saying you didn’t have to but best burger stand in the country does sound like some fun to me especially if it’s with a pretty girl,” Ryan says, “Though jumping off of building can be fun.”

He kind of felt bad about her having to pay considering that he was pretty well off back home though here he was pretty much broke.

“Sure I can definitely teach you a few moves after we eat,” he says, “I saw a few places that would work nicely for that type of thing but since you seem to be from around here any places you have in mind would probably work out better.”

He just called her pretty again. Mitzi thought he might hear the butterflies moving around in her stomach, but he smile was so big that it threatened to consume her whole face.

"Come on, handsome. Burgers, then training." she says, taking his hand to lead him out of the alley. That crazy guy could lay there until morning for all she cared.

She leads him to Jimmy O's Burgers and Fries, a nice little mom-and-pop joint about a block and a half from where they met.

"This place is open twenty-four hours, which is awesome. They've got just about any kind of burger you like, and chicken stuff, too." Mitzi says.

"Go ahead and have whatever you like. I haven't had a cheeseburger in weeks. You're actually the first bit of good news that's shown up in around here recently." Mitzi says.

“Sounds like a plan to me,” Ryan said as he let her lead him out of the alleyway.

Normally he probably would have done something more to secure the guy he had knocked out but with how hard he had hit him there was no way he was getting up for hours so he could take care of that later.

“My kind of place,” Ryan said. It did remind him a bit of Gena’s if it was more burger focused and the food already smelled great.

“I’ll probably just have a bacon-cheeseburger, fries and a soda,” he says.

“I’m sorry to hear that,” Ryan says, “But at least I can help make things a little better for you while I’m here.”

He considered asking what had been happening of late but decided to wait till later to ask that.

Mitzi puts in their orders, ordering a regular cheeseburger and fries for herself. Now that she could see him better, Ryan was even hotter than she first thought. He could be on TV or in the movies, so why was he out here beating up crooks with his free time?

"Tonight is helping with that. I lost my mom recently, and couple of good friends as well. My friends were...like us." Mitzi says, hoping Ryan catches her meaning.

"Meanwhile, there's so much crazy stuff going on in the world, it's hard to keep up." she says.

"But you probably knew that already."

“I’m very sorry to hear that,” Ryan says sincerely and catching the meaning, “I kind of know what that’s like my dad has passed away a few times it’s rather complicated.”

He really felt bad about that kind of stuff happening to someone gorgeous or otherwise. Though being gorgeous did make him feel a bit more sorry about it.

“Sadly isn’t that always the case,” Ryan says knowing a bit about what was going on here having read up on the current events.

“It’s a rather complicated situation but yeah,” Ryan says, “I can barely keep it all together so I’d rather not confuse you with the details.”

“Talking about it helped and I had good friends I could rely on for support and friends of the family.” Even if his dad's deaths never seemed to stick for more than a month before Khonshu would just bring him back under the light of the full moon.

“What happened with your mom, if you don’t mind me asking,” Ryan says.

Mitzi looks away for a moment, not certain she wants to talk about what happened with Annie, because the grief is still very fresh. Most days, she can fake until she makes it, pretending that she's not in any pain at all.

That usually lasts until she wakes up in the middle of the night, unsure of where she is until everything comes back to her. She's not at home with Annie and Annie's not going to come and harass her out of bed in the morning.

Annie's not going to be there ever again.

"She died only a couple of months ago. Our apartment caught fire in the middle of the night. I was asleep and she was in the living room, I guess. Mom drank a lot, so she often came and went, woke and slept as she wanted." Mitzi says.

"I...got lucky and woke up, but there was already smoke in my room by the time I got to the door. I broke the window and climbed out and I...I just assumed she'd be out there waiting for me.

Everyone else in the building got out, but when I looked around, I didn't see her. No one saw her get out. I kept hoping that maybe she was out at the store or at the bar, but deep down, I /knew/ she didn't get out.

The firemen confirmed it later." Mitzi says, her voice breaking. She was /not/ going to cry in front of this guy, but Ryan will still see a couple of tears.

"The same night, my friend Jai disappeared. No one saw him for weeks until recently. They found his body in Africa. Someone...someone killed him. And yet people like the guy who attacked me get to live to hurt people every day and I just don't get it, Ryan?

Why?" Mitzi asks.

Ryan notices the pain in her voice and the couple tears rolling down her cheeks. She had been through a lot recently it was kind of amazing she was holding up as well as she was.

Knowing and wanting to do something he reaches across the table to hold one of her hands. He then looks her in the eyes with his grey ones before saying, “I don’t know why that happens. One of life’s great mysteries. People a heck of a lot smarter than me will be debating why that is till the end of time and even then they probably won’t be able to come up with a good answer.

But what I do know is that you can’t let yourself drowned in all the bad stuff. You’re too pretty and nice for stuff like that to keep happening to you. I know you probably don’t want to right now but at some point you just need to let yourself breakdown and let it all out to someone. Sure maybe they won’t know what to do but at least it’s all out there and not inside slowly killing you.”

“If there’s anything I could do to help or make you feel a bit better just let me know and I’ll see if I can do that, ok,” Ryan says giving her a little smile.

Mitzi offers him a sad smile.

"You're...kinda helping already. I can talk to my friends about this, but...they're all dealing with their own pain and problems and it's not fair of me to complain when the rest of them are handling things." she says, taking a second to wipe her eyes.

Her other hand is still holding Ryan's as she looks at him.

"You're pretty awesome, Ryan. I wish I knew more guys like you. Jai was pretty awesome, too.

Which means you probably have a girlfriend, right?" she asks.

“Well I’m glad to be of help,” Ryan said still with a small smile on his face.

“Thanks your pretty awesome too,” Ryan says, “Actually no I don’t have a girlfriend though with the traveling I’ve been doing of late it would have been hard to do anyways.”

Explaining the whole interdimensional traveling thing would be kind of hard and he wasn’t sure he wanted to do that just yet.

Though he probably should do that soon, he rather liked Mitzi and didn’t want to give her the wrong impression because it wasn’t like he was staying here and he wasn’t even sure how long he would be here.

"Oh, you like to travel? Where have you been?" she asks, suddenly very interested and animated.

"I love the idea of seeing new places. If I had the money, I'd go to Egypt. Cairo is supposed to be an amazing city, especially at night." she says.

Most girls wanted to go to Paris or Rome, and Mitzi did, too, but Egypt was a favorite dream destination of hers.

"I've wanted to go since I was eight and I saw it on National Geographic." she admits sheepishly.

“Yeah Cairo is a really neat city,” Ryan says, “Egypt in general thought is amazing.”

Ryan had been to Egypt a few times with his mom due to her work in Egyptology.

“National Geographic does have a habit of making people want to go to really cool places,” Ryan says.

“I haven’t exactly been doing that type of traveling though,” He explains, “It’s kind of been more interdimensional so when I said I wasn’t from around here it might have been a bit of an understatement.”

"Okay, maybe I misunderstood you again. You said interdimensional, right? Are you from the future?" she asks. Mitzi not stupid, but she's never met anyone who's done it, like most people.

The waitress brings their food and smiles at the two of them, but Mitzi waits for her to leave before gesturing for Ryan to continue.

Damn, she was going to have to let go of his hand to eat, wasn't she?

"What's it like where you're from?" she asks.

Ryan waited till the waitress was out of earshot so she would not think they were both nuts. Though then again you kind of have to be a little bit of some kind of crazy to want to do the whole superhero thing.

“Yes I said interdimensional,” Ryan says, “Though I’d say my world and your world are roughly at the same point in time so no I’m not from the future.”

Damn that burger smells really good, Ryan thought. But he also knew he had to explain this and really could leave someone hanging like that.

“The world I’m from is a lot like your but at the same time really different,” Ryan explains, “We have places like New York City, London, and Hong Kong, but we don’t have a Keystone City, Metropolis, or Gotham.

We got heroes and teams like that but they aren’t really all that a like. Well Deadpool from my world does from what I read when I got here remind me a bit of Deathstroke from yours a bit.

There’s some small changes in history too like some of the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt differ in some cases.

Also on my world people aren’t always hero friendly and have a tendency to get suspicious about them and what their motives are and can get downright nasty about it.

I could probably go into more detail about stuff if you like.”

"How about we eat first, and then we talk about it more?" she suggests, giving him a smile as she chewed over what he'd told her.

It sounded unbelievable, but then, in a world of people who could literally move faster than a speeding bullet and the like, how could she rule out what Ryan was telling her?

"I've only heard of Deathstroke in quiet whispers, but I don't know anything about him." she says, eating a fry.

"How long have you been doing...this?" she asks, referring to the whole heroing bit.

"Sure eating sounds like a good idea to me," Ryan says.

He really hoped this whole other dimensional thing wouldn't scare her off as he was rather having fun.

"I only know about him from what I read in the justice league archives," Ryan says.

"I've been doing this whole heroing thing for over a year now though I've been doing training and stuff since I was six."
