Mitzi looks away for a moment, not certain she wants to talk about what happened with Annie, because the grief is still very fresh. Most days, she can fake until she makes it, pretending that she's not in any pain at all.
That usually lasts until she wakes up in the middle of the night, unsure of where she is until everything comes back to her. She's not at home with Annie and Annie's not going to come and harass her out of bed in the morning.
Annie's not going to be there ever again.
"She died only a couple of months ago. Our apartment caught fire in the middle of the night. I was asleep and she was in the living room, I guess. Mom drank a lot, so she often came and went, woke and slept as she wanted." Mitzi says.
"I...got lucky and woke up, but there was already smoke in my room by the time I got to the door. I broke the window and climbed out and I...I just assumed she'd be out there waiting for me.
Everyone else in the building got out, but when I looked around, I didn't see her. No one saw her get out. I kept hoping that maybe she was out at the store or at the bar, but deep down, I /knew/ she didn't get out.
The firemen confirmed it later." Mitzi says, her voice breaking. She was /not/ going to cry in front of this guy, but Ryan will still see a couple of tears.
"The same night, my friend Jai disappeared. No one saw him for weeks until recently. They found his body in Africa. Someone...someone killed him. And yet people like the guy who attacked me get to live to hurt people every day and I just don't get it, Ryan?
Why?" Mitzi asks.
