The End of Everything
Damien Wilson watches as his technicians monitor the progress of the machine as it begins to power up. Jai West is performing without issue and Damien stands with his mother and sister,  watching as the clock approaches midnight. This project is the culmination of decades of work, going back to his grandfather's experiments. Ra's al Ghul had a sweeping vision, Damien agreed, but he allowed too many small details to remain to chance, such as his ongoing issues with Batman.

Bruce Wayne's death was an issue, but Terry McGinnis was going to be a problem, as would Wayne's daughters and other partners.  The Outsiders would come for him eventually, too. He had no doubt that he could stop them as they came, but an en masse attack would be harder to stop than a piecemeal one. Hence, tonight's experiment.

"Master, the Machine is ready for use. The Denver sub-station is also up and running. America should be protected from the experiment." Lloyd Simmons says.

"Excellent. And Mr. West's status? " Damien asks.

"He's performing optimally." Simmons says.

"Very well. Proceed." Damien says, looking over to the reddish-yellow blur inside the cylindrical machine beyond the glass. The power from Jai's exertions was captured and fed into the machine, allowing it to operate at such a high level. The young man was a generator of immense energy. If he survived this effort, Damien would use him again, or perhaps one of the other speedsters his people had been tracking.

"Morgaine, this year is nearly over. Do you have any resolutions, my sister?" Damien asks.

"I will do my best to carry out this mission then, Damien," Morgaine said.

"I am..interested to see the results of your work, I admit."

"I truly believe that this experiment will better humanity...although there will be those who try to stand against us and against progress." Damien says, walking over to the console.

"Are you ready, Morgaine? Mother?" he asks.

Talia nods.

"I am ready, Damien."

Damien nods and presses the button.

And the entire world goes white.

-One hour later-

The worldwide blackout lasts only for two minutes.

An hour later, the world has gone to hell.

"I did /not/ sign up for this, Mr. Wilson! The pulse didn't hit America, as we expected, but it hit every other continent! The death toll is already at one million and counting.

Sir, people were driving, flying planes, walking down the street when they lost consciousness! Many of them couldn't even save themselves!" Lloyd Simmons says, a look of panic and fear in his eyes.

"Mr. Simmons, progress sometimes necessitates sacrifice. Think of it this way. That is one million people who will not drain the Earth's resources with their foolishness, greed or ineptitude." Damien says.

"Is that /all/ you can say? People are /dead/! No scientific discovery is worth the loss of human life! I-I'm going to the papers! I'll go to the news and tell everyone about what you made me do! They'll send the Justice League or the Justice Society of America after you! You're a mass-murderer!" Simmons rants.

Damien sighs, putting on his gloves and looks to his sister.

Morgaine took a brief moment to compose herself, before looking at Lloyd Simmons.

"I am afraid I can't allow that, Mr. Simmons." She leaped over the railing, swinging her sword at his neck.

When his head was on the floor, Morgaine looked up at the other scientists.

"Does anyone /else/ share Mr. Simmons sentiments?" She growled.

"Before the lady's question is answered, what of Jai West?" Damien asks.

One of the other researches looks up at Damien with fear in his eyes.

"Sir...something happened in the containment cell during the experiment. The boy began moving faster than previously recorded. We...with think he tried to overload the machine, but whatever he did, his body couldn't handle the stress.

He burned himself out, sir. He's dead." the researcher says.

Damien inhales deeply, then exhales. This...was irritating to say the least. The energy spike was traceable from anywhere in the world, though the Americans were the only conscious people on the planet at that time. It was safe to assume that someone picked up on the energy spike.

And the boy was dead. He was going to be hard to replace.

"Well, that settles it. Gentlemen, I thank you all for your participation in this experiment and your contributions. Please accept this token of my gratitude."

Morgaine, kill them all." Damien says, and turns to leave.

"Mother, come. We need to get to the chopper right away. We may have company shortly." Damien says.

"Certainly, brother," Morgaine said, grinning.

When she had finished her job, she joined Damien and their mother in the chopper.

"What are you going to do now, Damien?"

"My vision showed me that Lian will be in danger soon. I must rescue her, even if I have to kidnap her from Star City, kicking and screaming." Damien says, withdrawing a small remote-like device from his coat as the plane takes off.

"People will come to avenge Jai West, but we let them spend themselves upon shadows. For now, we will bide our time and enact the next portion of my plan. There is a monastery in Tibet full of holy men guarding a relic of great power. They will not give this relic away without a fight, Morgaine. I will need your lethal prowess again." Damien says as the chopper pulls away from the base.

"For now, however, I have made the first move. That is all they know."

Damien presses three buttons on the remote. The machine and the base that housed it explodes in a fireball that lights the night, consuming the complex and destroying the bodies of those who'd known of the experiment.

Including that of the, until that moment, still living Jai West.

"Then must go to her, and soon," Morgaine said, Talia nodding her agreement. "Try to convince it is for the baby's sake, at least."

"You will have my skill, Damien," she said. "You know this."

She paused.

"I saw...I saw myself facing my father and Lady Shiva," she said, almost in a whisper. "But I do not know how it is possible...they are dead. I saw Lady Shiva's body after she was murdered...and I saw my father's when they brought him home..." She looked truly disturbed.

Damien looks at his sister in surprise.

"You...saw the dead as well? In my vision, Lian and I were about to reconcile when the sky turned dark. We looked out of the window of her apartment and the streets of Star City were filled with the dead in every direction as far as the eye could see.

They looked up at us and then they started to climb the walls and break down the doors to her building. They were coming for us." Damien says quietly.

"I have an idea. We might have been the only two to have these kinds of visions, Morgaine. We will find others who saw and learn what they know. If we are to see the dead again in the future, we will be prepared." Damien says, taking her hand.

Morgaine nodded. "Agreed, Damien. This way, we shall be prepared for when it happens."

There was a long pause.

"I was not alone, in my vision," she said. "Robert Queen was with me."

"You are certain, Morgaine?" Damien asks, pondering what this could mean. The implications were not reassuring, but now they had to decide on a course of action.

"Are you willing to let him live long enough to see if this vision comes to pass, Morgaine? There is a good chance that killing him may keep it from occurring. We cannot know until it occurs." he says.
