I'm sorry to have to tell you this... (Keith and Tim)
(*takes places after the Songbirds finale*)

She still had Mia's blood on her.  She still had on the wrecked remains of her party dress and one of the shoes and she still wasn't sure how much of the rest of the evening had transpired, but one thing stood out crystal clear.  Mia was dead.  Mia had pushed her out of the way and taken an arrow to the heart.  An arrow fired by a madman that Marissa had pledged to stop.

She had failed, but that wasn't the painful part.  The painful part was that her failure had ended the life of Keith's sister, of Tim's friend. She was responsible for the death of a woman dear to her boyfriend and her brother.

She had to call them.  Keith first.  Marissa dialed the number she knew by her very heavy heart.

Red Robin is out on patrol when the call is routed to him. He's just finished beating down a street-gang when he answers.

"Long time, no hear, Robin. What's going on?" he asks, firing a line to the nearest building.

"Tim, I need to talk to you." She winced when he called her Robin. Robin was a hero. Robin didn't get friends killed. "Can...can you go off patrol for a bit?"

Marissa was quiet for a moment, though the muffled sounds of what might be crying could be heard. When she did speak again, it was with a ragged voice.

"Mia's dead. I...it's my fault."

Mia...dead? Tim couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"Marissa, I need you to slow down and tell me everything." Tim says, his mind working furiously. He needed to see this for himself, to understand what happened before he went any further.

Marissa took a deep breath. Retelling things was every inch as painful as living it had been and as the words to what happened moved from her lips she wasn't just on the phone; she was living it again, first in the Narrows going toe-to-toe with the Artist then finally pulling Mia's still-warm lifeless body from the harbor. She felt the chill of it cut into her bones anew.

Nothing was colder than blood.

"It's my fault," she repeated, her voice still ragged and her heart still raw.

The Artist? It couldn't be. The son of a bitch was in Super-Max. Mia had pulled Tim off the guy herself after she'd saved Tim himself.

And now Mia was dead. If Tim had just killed him when he had the chance, Mia would be alive right now. Marissa wouldn't have been targeted by him.

Yet another person whose blood was on his hands. Cerdian, maybe Jai West, now Mia.

"No, Marissa. This isn't your fault. It's /his/."

It's mine.

"Did you get him, Marissa? Does Keith Queen or her family know?" Tim asks.

God. He was going to have to tell Lian.

"Gordon's got him in the secure lockup downtown with guards on him. Jane and I took the scumbag out and I may have busted his face more than Batman would prefer but it wasn't enough. I wanted to kill him. I did."

She takes a deep breath.

"I told Keith."

Keith hadn't gotten to the airport yet when his phone went off. The ring tone he had for Marissa, Kaleidoscope, signaled who it was.

"Sure," he replied. He closed his phone, hanging up, and headed for Wayne Tower.

When he got there, the guard let him go through, and he went up to see Marissa. He opened the door and walked on in.

He'd find her sitting on an immaculate white couch, she a smear of dirt and drying blood, one of Mia's arrows in her hand.

The arrow.

"Keith..." She looked up at him, then looked away. She choked on her own words for a moment before forcing herself calm, redirecting her eyes to his. She had to look him in the eye.

"Mia died tonight. There was a serial killer targeting me--and her--and...and I thought I could do this. I thought I could stop him. Mia helped. Mia had my back the whole time, but the sonofabitch...he got her arrows...

"she took an arrow meant for me. Right to her heart."

Stone cold silence.

If Keith could explain it, he'd say he felt like he'd walked into a wall right as he walked through the door. But he was too choked up for words. It took a moment, but he started to tear up. He looked at Marissa, then the arrow in her hand, and then...

"W-what? Y-you're kidding, right? Mia can't be..."

He paused.

"Dead?"

Then he was hit by the full impact of what Marissa had told him. It was like taking an arrow to his heart. It dropped him to his knees. The waterworks started, and he just broke down. He didn't feel anything but sadness, and he murmured his wish that it wasn't true over and over again, like a broken record.

The arrow was cast aside and Marissa moved to Keith, wrapping her arms around him. She had no words for him. What was there to say? She simply held him, as long as he'd allow it.

And he allowed it, for as long as he wept. Eventually he managed to work himself up to wrapping his arms around Marissa.
