Ella eyed him suspiciously, her own cheeks reddening. Jenny probably had something to do with this. "I'll remember you forever now, the first boy to give me flowers" she joked, closing the door behind them and finding a tall glass to hold the flowers.
The way he fumbled his words was setting her on edge, like he was about to deliver some bad news or something. "You look like someone's just died" Ella joked, setting the glass on the window sill and offering her bed, shamefully still unmade, for Hendrix to sit on.
He smiled awkwardly, still red in the cheeks. "Well that's really... um... you know, good."
Hendrix plunked down on her bed and rested his head in his hands briefly. "I'm sorry," he muttered miserably. "I'm just so... nervous," he couldn't quite look her in the eyes.
Ella worried her lip and sat down beside Hendrix, rubbing his back in little circles soothingly. "Hen, you're worrying me" she pouted.
He rested his head against her shoulder and sighed gently. "It's nothing... nothing bad or anything I just..." he was nervous that he would ruin things, he was nervous that this would change them for good but at the same time he wanted to take the chance. Maybe he didn't have to swan dive into though.
"I was wondering if you would go to the homecoming dance... with me?" he asked quietly.
Ella's stomach lurched uncomfortably and she was filled with relief. Jenny hadn't said anything so scare him off after all. "Well shit" she blurted, clasping a hand over her mouth. Swearing was not her forte.
"Of course I will" she answered shyly. "I wouldn't want to go with anyone else!"
"Really?" he asked, his eyes wide. "I was... I was uh... kinda nervous... I never asked anyone on a date before... I mean... to a dance! It doesn't have to be a date... unless you want it to be... fuck," he hid his face from her.
"It's...not a big deal, right?" Ella replied a little shrilly. She took his hands away from his face and clasped one in her lap. It looked more like she was about to tell him someone had died. She gave his fingers a squeeze and grinned wildly.
"What does a date even mean, huh? I think I'd like that."
He squeezed her hand back and smiled. "Right, absolutely," he nodded. "Just.. hanging out... together... at a dance." His face was getting redder by the moment. "Um... what color you gonna wear?" He felt entirely silly but he was still excited that she had said yes in the first place.
"It's no big deal, I see you at all the other dances" Ella laughed. But it was different. This time she was actually going with him! Still, she calmed down a little at his question. Clothes. That was something she could focus on.
"Pink" she said without even thinking about it. "Or maybe rainbow? But pink is my favourite" she sighed.
"Pink!" he said cheerfully. "You always look nice in pink! Rainbow would be nice too though," he sputtered. He really had no idea how to talk about fashion. He, for the most part, dressed like an old man, getting most of his fashion sense from his grandfather anyways.
"We will definitely have a lot of fun," he said to reassure himself. "Definitely the two most colorful," he added with a grin. Talking about silly things was starting to calm him down, it was easy to just talk. |
