[info]wipeoutqueen:
Who: Emma and Ruby
What: Backdated to their first kiss over the summer.
Where: Summerland, CA
Summary: It was bound to happen eventually, right? At least it was romantic.

Emma hadn't regretted avoiding Sawyer at all since Ruby had shown up at her door a few weeks before. Her and the brunette had been attached at the hip. Every day was like the summer's previous to now except this one seemed more special. Perhaps it was just Emma's imagination, but she felt like things were about to change. Ruby had always been her best friend, someone she had loved from the very beginning, but now it had seemed like those feelings had become more real. She wanted to be the one who held Ruby every night when she went to sleep and woke up to every morning. She wanted to send her cute texts that would make the younger girl smile and kiss her in the hallways between classes. It was slowly eating the blonde girl alive.

It had become increasingly hard for Emma to not make a move on her best friend in the passing weeks. They had always had a touchy friendship, mostly because the blonde needed the physical contact to feel reassured, but now it seemed like every touch meant something new. She couldn't stop herself from blushing every time Ruby took her hand or scooted closer to spoon her when they were watching a movie. It was hard for Emma to not just turn and kiss the girl senseless.

They had decided to watch the sunset on the beach tonight, Emma promising Ruby that she wouldn't get too much sand on her. They had watched the sunset, and when it got dark enough, Emma had built a bonfire. It was a perfectly clear summer night, the beach dark enough to see all of the stars in the sky. They had picked a secluded spot too, to avoid any drunken party goers from harassing them. Emma was currently nestled with her back against Ruby's chest, enjoying the comfort of being in her arms. They were looking over the water quietly, just enjoying the warm summer night and each other's company.

"I wish everything could always be like this," Emma said sadly. She was dreading their return to school later that month and seeing her girlfriend. She shrank back into Ruby slightly, frowning. "It's just so easy being with you Ru, I feel...I feel like everything is okay."

It had been almost a month since Ruby had seen Victor, not since the morning after the party that his friend had thrown at the end of the school year. He had offered to side-along apparate home with her that morning, but Ruby had denied him, hadn't even wanted to look at him and remember how much shame he made her feel, and she made her way to the nearest Floo station with her splitting headache instead. She had been ignoring most of his texts and biding her time between her summer home, and Emma's home, ever since. Everything about the experience felt fresh, especially her disgust, despite a month passing by. It felt like every second night, she would jolt awake from the same dream, gasping for air in the real world as her dream world would dissipate slowly. It was the same every time, his hands around her neck and his full weight boring down on her, on top of her. He weighed probably more than twice what she did, and his breath that night had smelled like old beer and barbeque chips, a gross detail that even her frequent dreams wouldn't leave out. Sometimes she thought she could smell it for a few seconds even after she woke up. Every night it felt real, until she sat up and saw it was just Emma that was beside her instead. She didn't like to talk about it much, but Emma knew everything anyway, she understood.

Being with Emma was easier, preferable even, and it made more sense. Emma wouldn't hurt her, she could trust her. Even if she felt Emma's hands around her neck, she didn't think that she could really be scared. It wasn't the same. It was becoming harder and harder to avoid or deny the closeness between them, building more with each day they wasted on the beach together. Despite everything that had happened in the beginning, it was turning out to be a pretty relaxing summer for her. She couldn't think of a place that she'd rather be than Summerland right then.

Watching the sunset had sounded like a fine idea, and she had made sure that they were far enough down the shore to avoid trouble. Some of the drunken party goers tonight would probably be from her own sister's party, and she sure as hell didn't want to be there, or run into anyone from Blue Ridge at the moment. She had taken Emma at her word on the no sand promise, and Ruby brought their blanket and old battery-operated radio along with them, the same ones they had been dragging to the beach for almost ten years now, but both laid discarded beside the bonfire now. Her copy of Mockingjay lay across the top of the neatly folded blanket as well, but she had given up trying to read ages ago now, once the fire needed to be lit. She really wished they had brought something to eat, her stomach grumbling slightly as Emma leaned back against her. Ruby's knees were bent up, Emma leaning back between them, and the brunette's arms were loosely looped around the older girl's shoulders and neck from behind.

"Maybe we should just break our wands," she half-joked, though the thought had crossed her mind. Her parents would just buy her another, and make her go back to school. But if she didn't go back to school, she didn't have to deal with Victor at all. "We'd still need educations, of course. Perhaps we could go to public school here all year round. I heard they've got an exceptional debate team.. and state champion mathletes, how accomplished!"

Shaking her head a bit, Ruby let her chin rest on Emma's shoulder, near the crook of her neck. "In all seriousness though," she began slowly, never usually one to hesitate for even a second. Choosing words of comfort was different though, it was harder, even with Emma. She always wanted to say just the right thing to make the blonde girl feel better. "Everything is okay. I won't let anything happen to you.. I feel better here with you than I've felt-- well, in ages. Quote me on it later when I realize how insane I am for admitting it, but.. I'm not even really looking forward to going back to classes in September. I'm really not."

Emma giggled at the idea of breaking their wands. Her mother and father would be all for it, they wouldn’t mind sending Emma to a proper muggle school at all. It made the blonde girl sad to think about however. She loved being a witch, even if she wasn’t very good at certain parts of it, it had made all of her dreams come true. She didn’t want to go back to being just a normal girl, to being the stupid blonde who people made fun of in class. “I don’t wanna break my wand though,” she said, her bottom lip protruded in a pout. “Kids here at the public school aren’t as nice as the ones at Blue Ridge. They’d make fun of me or something.”

The blonde girl leaned her head into Ruby’s, the words of comfort making her feel better instantly. “You promise?” She asked, her voice small. “I’ve never been this happy in my life.” Ruby always made her feel better, no matter what was wrong. Her heart fluttered, and she scooted back into the other girl’s arms a little more. Could it be possible that Ruby felt something for her? She couldn’t tell, but it was times like this that made her desperate to find out. Ruby was always so careful with her, so nice. The other girl never criticized her the way she did other people.

Emma grinned, “You’re totally lying Ruby Sykes, I know you. You feel like that now but once school gets closer you’ll start getting all excited about it. You always do, it’s cute.”

"I don't either," Ruby admitted with a little sigh. There would probably be no way she could convince her parents to let her switch schools, realistically. It would probably take a lot of time and work, something neither of them had much of when it came to her. Tightening her arms a little around Emma, she shook her head. "But if we did go there.. well, they wouldn't. I wouldn't allow it, don't be silly.. if they had anything to say to you, they could say it to me," she assured her friend.

She cracked a smile when Emma leaned back against her head, and she felt her own chest tightening a little as the blonde scooted closer into her embrace. There wasn't really much space left between them, and even less left to the imagination. Just the shorter girl leaning back against her sent shivers up her spine that she tried hard to suppress. "Of course I promise. And when have I ever lied to you?" the brunette murmured back, turning her head a bit to look over at their bonfire. It was getting smaller, slowly burning out, but she was brought back to attention by Emma's comment, grinning herself.

"Oh fuck off, it's not really a lie.. I certainly won't be devastated to do some tests and a report or two, but.. you know, I just don't want to deal with everyone else. It's just going to be.. hard to be back there after this summer."

She propped her chin gently onto Emma's shoulder, pouting playfully. "I'm not cute, I'm sophisticated. And I'm not even excited to go back to school shopping.. that's pretty bad."

"They used to say stuff, you know, before we went to Blue Ridge," Emma confessed softly. It had been the boys mostly, the ones who she had fought with on the day she met Ruby. They were always giving her shit, trying to scare her away from their surf spot. She had no doubt in her mind that Ruby would protect her but Emma really didn't want to relive her days before Blue Ridge. "We have each other Ru, and no one can mess with us. Even when we go back, I'm not gonna let anyone hurt you, okay?"

"You're adorable Ru, don't lie! You can be cute and sophisticated if you want I guess." Emma laughed, shaking her head a little. "Not even excited to go shopping??"

Emma glanced over at Ruby, catching her pout. Her breath hitched in her throat and she stopped breathing for a few moments, her body ridged. She wanted to lean forward and capture that pout. She wanted to pour all of her feelings into that one kiss, to let Ruby know exactly how she felt. She couldn't find the courage to say the words, but maybe, just maybe she could show her in another way. Emma stared at Ruby and licked her lips unconsciously.

"Ru," she said carefully. "Can you promise me something?"

"I know," Ruby murmured back. There were still some of the guys around Summerland who liked to give them shit, but usually a well placed glare or rude retort from Ruby was enough to make them piss off. She didn't take shit from anyone, and she didn't expect Emma to either. It made the brunette crack a definite smile to hear that the other girl, despite her usual demeanor, wanted to stand up for her. "You'll protect me?" she asked, somewhat rhetorically. She knew the blonde would, even if they didn't say it.

She shook her head again, letting out another loud sigh. It depressed her just to think that back to school shopping was going to suck this year. They were sophomore now, which meant they got to buy way more interesting textbooks and they could start taking elective classes. But then when she thought about being anywhere near Victor, or having to split her time with Emma up with Sawyer, it sucked all of the fun out of the entire year to come. She shifted uncomfortably, digging her heels deeper into the sand as she leaned forward, tighter against Emma's back. "Not even excited to go shopping," she agreed, disheartened.

With Emma staring at her for a moment, Ruby's eyes flicked aside, the tiniest sign of apprehension. She felt as if she was under sudden extreme scrutiny, the intense way that her friend was eying her, and just the sight of the blonde licking her lips for a split second almost made Ruby groan out loud. What was getting into her? They were just hanging out, and they both had significant others already, shit as they were. But then there was this, and nights like the one they were having, and Ruby found that she didn't care one way or the other about Sawyer or Vic.

"Anything," Ruby agreed without another second of hesitation.

"I'll always protect you," Emma said determined to reassure the brunette. Even if she hated standing up for herself, she would do anything for Ruby. She could find the courage and strength so the other girl could keep smiling. The other girl always did so much to protect her and make sure that she felt safe. She wanted to do the same for the other girl. "I'll always protect you and make you smile, even if it just means trying to cheer you up about back to school shopping. You're my best friend Ru, I know you love school and back to school is like, your Christmas."

When Ruby reassured her that she would promise anything, Emma turned her head to look at Ruby. Her heart was pounding harder than she had ever felt it, even the few times she had tried speed. It was a different kind of racing heart beat, one that she was positive could never be recreated by a drug.

"P-promise me," she said, her voice cracking. She reached out her shaking left hand out and cupped Ruby's cheek so they were face to face. Emma's best case scenario in her head was that Ruby would just tell her she wasn't interested but that they could just be best friends without worry. Her worst case was that the girl would be completely disgusted with her and punch her. She didn't even weigh in the chance that Ruby might return the kiss.

"Promise me you won't hate me." Emma leaned in and pressed her lips gently against Ruby's.

Ruby sighed heavily, the corners of her mouth twitching slightly with a smile. "Yeah, it's almost better than Christmas.. normally it is, anyway. This year just isn't going to be the same as before," the brunette murmured. She had been trying to pump herself up for school, but it just wasn't working. It was the first year that she felt so upset about the fact that she and Emma were in different houses.

She stiffened up a little when Emma's head turned to suddenly to look at her, and she almost jumped at the sudden feeling of the blonde's hand against her cheek. Her eyebrows furrowed a bit as the other girl struggled to get her words out, and once they were out, Ruby didn't have much of a chance to question them before Emma's lips were pressed against her own. There was a split moment of shock, that this was actually happening, and then the brunette was already leaning right back in. She was never the hesitant or nervous sort, but she was pretty sure that she was shaking.

In an effort to keep her hands from shaking, she lifted them up instead, clumsily placing them on either side of Emma's face as she kissed the older girl.

Emma almost stopped kissing Ruby when she felt the girl kissing her back without a moment of hesitation. She was shocked. It was impossible, good things didn't happen to her like this. Then Ruby was placing her hands on her face and Emma pulled the brunette girl closer, deepening their kiss. She couldn't explain why, or how but she felt tears starting to trickle down her face. It was like something inside of her had broken down a damn, and she was suddenly filled with such a feeling of relief that she couldn't handle it.

She pulled away from Ruby after a few more moments had passed, still crying. Without any kind of explanation, she buried her face in the crook of the younger girl's neck, her arms wrapped around her neck. She was as close as she could get to Ruby at this point, and she was sure that she could hear the girl's heart beat. It was soothing along with the noise of the waves.

"D-did you mean it?" She managed to choke out after a few minutes.
