"Yes! What the fuck Leland!" she yelled back, looking at him like he was crazy. It was kind of hot, seeing him all worked up like this, but at the same time infuriating. How dare he hit her father like that? "Leland, stop!" She yelled at him as he pushed her father in the chest. She stepped between the two men, giving Leland an ineffective shove back.
"He's a friend dad, we're in the same year!" She told her father, never moving her glare away from Leland's face. "And I thought he was sane, but apparently I was wrong!" She felt her anger falter for a second when Leland called William "dad". What the hell was that supposed to mean? Leland had to be drunk, or on drugs, or maybe he finally lost it, but there was no way that Will could be his father. He was her father god damn it! "What's gotten into you?" She asked, looking at him questioningly. "Le are you drunk?!"
"I aint drunk Mars," he said, his hands shaking. He couldn't believe he hadn't put it together long before this. Sykes. Sykes from California. Duh.
"Why don't you tell her pops? Tell her about how you left my mom high and dry when you found out she was pregnant with me!" he yelled right past Marney. It stung to see him there, to know that he had picked up another family, that he had a daughter his age. That Marney was his daughter. "Why don't you tell her how you ruined my whole life man? Half the shit that happened wouldn'ta happened if you had at least paid child support!" He finally forced himself to look at the girl, his apparent half sister. "Your dad is... such an asshat," he said in a gentler but still edgy voice.
Marney was about to tell Leland off again for attacking her family when he started screaming at William. She clapped her hand over her mouth, shocked. She and Leland had never been particularly close but she had gathered bits and pieces about his past from talking to him at parties. This was just too much though, if Leland was telling the truth, that would be they were sister and brother. That would also mean…
She rounded on her father, pinning him with her glare now instead of Leland. “Tell me the truth,” she said sharply. She loved her father dearly, loved his money even more, but her mother was her mother. She wouldn’t let anyone cross the woman, even if it was the man that gave her life. “Tell me the god damn truth, or I will call Mom and have her here in seconds.” William opened and closed his mouth a few times, clearly shocked at his own daughter turning on him. “Marney, please, we’ll talk about this later,” he said gruffly, giving Carlita’s boy a glare. “You’re making a scene.” “No, we’re talking about this now!” Marney said louder, crossing her arms. She looked around to see that people were indeed starting to notice the commotion now. She knew her father would never tell her the truth if she kept questioning him directly, so she decided to take a different route. “Leland is the father of my baby William! I love him! And if you can’t accept that, then you can kiss walking me down the aisle goodbye!” She shouted loudly, throwing a wink over her shoulder at Leland. William’s face went pale more people turned around. “Quiet Marney! Stop this nonsense!” he growled at his daughter, grabbing her arm roughly and pulling her towards him. “You want to know the truth, fine! She was a custodian in my office, she cleaned for us. Your mother was having an affair with the pool boy. A man’s got needs that need to be filled, and Carlita was easy on the eyes.” Marney winced at the hold her father had on her arm, but kept quiet, wanting to hear the rest of the story. She always knew there was something evil lurking under the surface of William’s perfect exterior. “I never thought she’d fuck me over by getting pregnant with this little bastard!” He growled, his eyes flicking to Leland. “It was all the sluts little plan to drag herself out of the hole she—“ Marney had heard enough, and before she knew it, had slapped William across the face, hard. He released her arm, and she backed into Leland, rubbing the spot on her bicep that was purpling quickly. “Don’t you ever fucking touch me again,” she spat coldly. She turned to storm away from her father, grabbing Leland’s hand in the process. “Come on Leland,” she ordered harshly, giving his hand a tug.
"I'll give you a fuckin' scene," he said, his fists clenching at his sides. He was ready to hit again. Everything bad that had happened in his life, he had blamed on this man and here he was acting perfectly innocent.
When Marney told William that she was pregnant he damn near had a heart attack. "Marney!" he snapped but then William began talking, talking about his mom. He hated that whole damn family, fuck them, he would be better off without half their drama. "Don't you fuckin'..." then Marney slapped him, and almost all the hate he was feeling for her practically melted. He sneered at William cruelly. "Don't fuckin come back here. No one wants you here," he let Marney pull him away, keeping his eyes on William the whole time. "I don't... I don't even know what to say," he said quietly when it was just him and Marney. "I didn't know he had other kids..."
Marney lead Leland away from her father, their father she supposed now that she knew Leland was her brother. William watched them go before stalking off towards the front of the school to appirate home. Once she was sure William was gone, she plopped down in an empty chair, dragging Leland down next to her.
"He's an ass," she muttered, rubbing her temples. "I didn't know he did either, but I always suspected he cheated on mom. Not that she doesn't cheat on him too." She sighed, looking up at Leland. "Fucking assholes, both of them." She reached out and took his hand in hers. "I'm so sorry Le," she said sincerely. She felt guilty, the tables could have easily been turned.
He plunked down next to her, sullen and in an even worse mood than before but he did let Marney take his hand, feeling a little comfort in the gesture. "It's okay," he tried to shrug it off like it was no big deal even if the whole thing was bringing up everything he ever tried to hide about himself.
"I guess I'd rather have my fucked up life without him than a fucked up life with him," he growled. "I'm sorry you had to get involved," he gave her hand a squeeze back. "Sorry you had to deal with him your whole life. I just had to deal with his absence." |
