"Oh please..." he started, but then her next bit of news put him over the edge.
"Oh..." he couldn't find his voice anymore. He had had this conversation before and remembered every word of it with remarkable clarity. Leland swallowed hard and took another step closer and put his hand on her shoulder. "Hey," his voice took on a softer quality. "Um... Faith, look..." he couldn't quite bring himself around to say what he needed to say. "Whatever you wanna do..." he faltered. "I'm sorry..."
Faith shrugged his hand off her shoulder and folded her arms with resolve. "I already know what I gotta do" she said. "I'm getting this thing sucked out" she informed him.
His hand dropped uselessly by his side. "Okay," he gulped. He understood it but still... it hurt. He just thought of Eddie and what his life would be like without her. "Right..."
He stared at the wall just beyond her, unsure of what to say. "If you need anything from me..." he started. "I uh..." he turned away, he couldn't really look at her, a sobering feeling overwhelmed him, he felt sick to his stomach.
Faith turned to look at him now that the worst was over and leaned against the dresser as she looke dup at him. If you need anything was just guy talk for please go away in her opinion, but she scrunched up her face a bit and took a big breath.
"I could kind of use some of the cash" she muttered. She wasn't going to borrow that money off her sisters, they would rat her out for sure. "I mean, it's your spunk so..."
He finally looked at her, trying to keep his eyes from being so sad and nodded wordlessly. He was not going to cry like a little bitch in front of this chick. No. Fucking. Way.
"Yeah," he said at last. "Look, I don't want you to do this alone." He crossed his arms over his chest. "I know I'm probably not like your first choice... I just can't..." he couldn't get the words out. He felt so fucking awkward. "I know it sucks to have to face shit by yourself man and I can't just sit back while this kid gets sucked out..." he felt himself loosing control over his emotions now.
Faith was about to point out that Leland definitely wasn't her first choice to accompany her to an abortion clinic, but it was looking dangerously like he was about to cry, which freaked her out more. "Yeah okay, you can come" she said quickly, hoping it would stop his eyes welling up. If this jock started crying he was going to set her off too. She hoped no one would find them sobbing together like little pussies.
He nodded. "God damn it," he muttered quietly, pinching the bridge of his nose like that little bit of pressure would stop him from loosing it now. "Yeah, yeah okay. You schedule the appointment yet?" he asked.
He didn't want to be feeling the way he was but it was just so fucking sad. He was pretty sure all the beer at the party wouldn't make him feel better but he was going to fucking try once this conversation was over.
"I'll do it on Monday" she replied unemotionally, looking down at her stomach in spite of herself. She would not feel guilty about this.
"Babies born under love potions turn out to be mutants anyway" she muttered in some way of reassurance.
"Right, Monday's as good a day as any," he mumbled, not really sure what he even meant by it. He couldn't help that his eyes flicked toward her stomach when she looked down as well.
"I..." he shook his head. He felt like the guilt was ripping him apart. "I'm sorry this happened to you," he said, averting his eyes and pulling his baseball cap down over his eyes.
"Me too" she replied before looking at him a little more sympathetically. "It's not your fault, these things happen." Only they didn't usually happen like this. "I didn't mean what I said earlier" she said grudgingly.
"I guess you're a pretty cool guy" Faith sighed and patted his back whilst her eyes darted towards the door and escape.
"Neither did I," he said nodding. He was sorry he had been calling her that blue haired nerd but no sense in bringing that up now.
"You're not so bad yourself," he patted her shoulders gently, feeling totally lost.
Faith managed to smile weakly, suddenly feeling very tired. If she found Sasha they could go home and watch shitty movies until she fell asleep like a normal day. "Y'all just saying that 'cuz you got me preggo" she joked, then winced.
"I guess I'll talk to you on Monday/"
Leland laughed weakly even though it made him feel like an even bigger asshole. "Nah girl," he said shaking his head. "Coolest nerd I know."
"Yeah, I'll talk to you Monday," he nodded. "Here's my number," he hurriedly scribbled his number down on a bit of paper and handed it over with shaking hands. "Take care of yourself," he added. |
