He looked up when she giggled and something came over him. "Well damn, aint you just the cutest thing?" he said giving her chin a little nudge with his finger. "Yankees are one of the best damn baseball teams ever," he explained jovially. "I'm a New York fan all except for basketball, gotta go with the Lakers man."
"M'not so cute" Faith sighed with a silly smile on her face. She blushed a little when he nudged her. "My sisters are cute, I'm not the cute one" she carried on rambling, feeling a little dizzy.
With rapt attention she listened to Leland talk, nodding and pretending she knew what he was saying. It was all going over her head though, she was strictly a magical sports person. "In Aspen we're not supposed to fly our brooms and shit because of the altitude" she told him.
"Oh you hush that," he cupped her cheek and smiled down at her. "Y'all are the prettiest thing I've seen all night. No one is prettier than you and don't let the haters tell you different."
"Oh! You should come visit me in the summer time! I have access to the school fields all summer when no one is here 'cept for a few nerds trying to get ahead," he grinned. "High altitude, pfft," he waved it off. "You got me babe!"
Faith had pretty much melted into a puddle, yet her mouth was strangely dry. She covered the hand holding her cheek and smiled softly up at the boy.
"I've got you babe" Faith echoed, grinning. If she could have seen herself now she may have self combusted from the shame. Luckily everyone else was just as wrapped up to notice her. At least she hoped that. "So like, what's your name?" she asked him.
He felt himself getting butterflies when she put her hand over his. He could barely pull himself together, then it occurred to him. He didn't even know this blue haired siren's name! For shame!
"Leland," he said a bit dumbly. "And what name would be suitable enough for such a pretty face?" he asked. Damn he would have felt stupid if any of the boys had over heard him, especially talking to a blue haired nerd. He was totally wrapped up in her though. He couldn't stop himself.
Maybe if her head wasn't so clouded she could have perhaps wondered if this Leland knew that jock asshole she had that thing with before. What if he had heard all the bad things he had said about her? She would be mortified.
"Faith" she said, scrunching her nose and nodding towards the doors. "Wanna go smoke with me?"
"Yeah," he nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, definitely," he reached over and took her hand, heading toward the door. "You are like... the most amazing person I've ever met," he said as they headed out the door. "I'm not nearly good enough for you," he pouted slightly. "Do you like kids?"
Faith lit a cigarette with trembling hands and offered Leland the pack lovingly. Did she like kids? Not really. But it could be a trap! She had to be smooth. "Do you like kids?" she asked, looking a little shifty.
He accepted the pack of cigarettes from her, brushing his fingers over her hands before taking one and hanging the pack back. He didn't even like cigarettes but whatever, she was totally worth it. He lit his cigarette and looked at her carefully. He didn't want to drop the bomb and have her run away but she deserved to know. "Faith... don't freak out or anything 'cause like... you're so fuckin' rad and I just wanna be with you but I gotta be honest..."
He took a long drag on his cigarette and exhaled. "I got a baby girl. She's almost two now and she's real cool but I feel that... you should know that."
"That's cool man, I love kids! I bet she's totally cute. Hey, thanks for letting me know, that's really thoughtful of you." Faith smiled widely. She was going to be this kid's mom, if it would make him happy. She could just drop out and be there all the time, play with it and take it for walks and shit. How hard could it be?
"Oh good," he wiped his brow nervously. "I was worried you would like flip and leave. Girls don't like that I'm a dad, but aint none 'a them girls as amazing as you," he leaned over and brushed his lips against her cheek.
"She is totally cute," before he could say another word the phone was out and he showed her the front display screen with Eddie grinning up at the camera. "Her name's Eddie."
"We can have more babies" Faith blurted out, taking the phone and cooing at the screen. "All kids needs a brother or sister, right?"
"Girl," he said putting his hands on her hips and pulling her closer. "We can have as many babies as you want," he kissed her nose sweetly. "Let's get outta here when we're done these cigs," he said. "We can go back to my apartment and check on Eddie, fuckin' play some Legos," he giggled. "Whaddya think?"
"Fuck it man, let's get out of here right now!" Faith said, yanking the cig out of his mouth and tossing both of them away. She reached up and grabbed his face, planting a forceful kiss on his lips before grinning.
"I totally love legos, too. You're the best Valentine ever!"
Leland kissed her back just as forcefully, pulling her body as close to his as possible. "Your wish is my command beautiful," he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and started walking toward the parking lot where his beater car was waiting, car seat in the back. "Man, I fuckin' love legos too," he giggled. "We're totally meant to be soul mates."
"I think you're the best Valentine ever. I'd do anything for you." |
