The explosion during parents weekend had worried Hendrix enough, the murders in town sent up a red flag, but this was just too much. A murder on campus. One of their own was dead and their campus seemed to be in imminent danger. He didn't even know where to start but he needed to do soemthing. He needed to feel like he was helping and protecting his home in some way. He snapped back to attention when Jenny spoke near him and nodded his head vigorously.
Baxter smiled warmly at Jenny. "An excellent move on your Miss Parry," he said kindly. He felt bad for the girl, she worked hard and was by all means an excellent Head Girl but here they were in the middle of one of the craziest years. It was very much the same for Headmaster Sato. "We all need to band together," he said calmly. "No one is to go wandering off," he looked at the students more seriously. Hendrix patted Jenny's hand and gave her a reassuring look then he looked over at Ella and smiled nervously. He would much rather be there with them than have them in any other group. They were lucky to have all been assigned together.
"Standin' here talkin' bout it aint gonna change nothin' huh?" Dani asked a bit gruffly. She was getting impatient with all the talking and the lack of any actual action. She ruffled her map a bit before shoving it into her pocket. "I think it's high time we set outta this joint and start lookin' fer somethin'," she said.
Then she looked at her professor who were all gawking at her. "And stay together and shit," she added, as if that would save some face.
"She's right!" Shelby piped up from the other end of the group, showing he was even paying attention for the first time. He had been though, he was just eager to get on with the actual watch too. "We ain't getting no where just standing here!"
He folded up his map and stuffed it in the back pocket of his jeans, really only giving it a quick glance over. He instead pulled out his wand, stepping forwards. "Let's get going then, head up the field and check things out. I need a buddy first though?"
There was a big part of Jenny that just wanted to stay rooted to the ground, even as Dani and Shelby both demanded that they get moving, but she fought hard against it. "We should get started," she agreed slowly, as if she were considering it carefully before actually acting, starting to walk forward and sticking close in between her sister and Hendrix.
"Not scary at all, right?" she said quietly, turning her head a bit toward Hen after they had been walking for a bit, flashlight beams bobbing and weaving in front of them.
Hendrix was glad to be moving, as they were moving he was focusing more on their flashlights cutting through the darkness of the woods and not stepping on anything. He knew he was graceless enough to trip over any damn thing in his way. With Jenny on his arm and Ella right on the other side of her, he felt better. They were all together, they would be able to take care of each other. He was completely lost in reassuring himself when Jenny spoke.
"Oh yeah!" he said lightly. "Yeah, this isn't scary at all," he didn't sound as reassuring as he had hoped. "We're fine," there was a crack to his right, making him jump and turn his light. Nothing. Just a small fox running away from their group. He couldn't blame the little guy, it was normally quiet in the woods around the school but now there were troupes of kids stomping through. Animals were probably going to be pretty jumpy.
Dani hung back near Shelby, she gave him a little elbow and grinned. "Looks like I'm yer partner tonight buddy," she laughed pointing at the twins and Hendrix. "The giant and the twins are partin' fer nothin'," she started walking, trying to avoid little twigs and branches so she wouldn't trip. She was more afraid of falling and looking like a fool than she was of anything else.
When Hendrix jumped she had to snort back a laugh and cover her mouth. She twirled her wand listlessly as they made their way through, trying her best to pay attention to what was around them. She turned her head here and there to check on small noises but there was nothing that was really catching her eyes. "Find anythin' spooky yet?" she asked Shelby, her voice neither bored nor disrespectful. |
