"I'm tellin' ya babe, I've been tellin' Mack for years that we musta been basket babies.. y'know, like left on the door step or something? Shit like that still happened in the nineties," she replied, shaking her head with a weak smile. It was always easier to explain it away with silly possibilities than admit that they all genuinely just had bad parents.
"Or switched at the hospital, I've considered that too! Y'know I looked it up, they say like on average or whatever, twelve newborn kids go home from the hospital with the wrong folks daily.. like, think 'bout that!"
"I wouldn't doubt it babe," she said as they mosied away from the larger crowd. "I mean, I know I was a mistake but it's not like she has to rub it in every second of every day ever," she pressed her eyes shut. "I would never do that to a kid man."
"Still... twelve kids every day? I'd say chances are we were some of them," she joked lightly.
"Me either. It ain't the kids fault that their parents got issues.. ain't no reason to make 'em miserable," Hunter muttered back, sounding surprisingly wise for someone so bitter. She gave Michi a little squeeze with the arm she had around her.
"Twelve kids a day on average, I mean.. I guess that could be eleven kids one day, and then thirteen the next day, but it's still a huge chunk! I say we get tested, maybe we're lucky. I bet the government gotta pay a whole lotta cash money for a fuck up like that, too."
"Right?" she asked, it had been a genuine question of hers for years and she just had to wonder what she had done as a kid to deserve the shit she went through. In the end the only offense she ever managed to wrangle up was that she had been born. Sighing deeply, she opened her eyes.
"Yeah we should," she snorted. It'd be a miracle if she ended not actually being Mika Miyaki's child. She had seen similarities in herself and her mother and it had been enough to drive her up a wall. She hated the things about her that were like her mother, she hated being compared to the woman and she hated being related to her. From what she knew of her father... well, she couldn't stand the thought of being as cruel to him so she pushed their one visit to the back of her mind. "We could totally just... escape and be done with them. Get the fuck outta here," she said lightly.
"Like run away elope? Are you proposin' to me already?" Hunter joked back, giving the younger girl's side a little nudge. Sometimes she had considered quitting school, studying wasn't really her thing and university was optional, but the social life and life away from home always brought her back. So much as she loved her home state, her parents made her hate being in Texas most of the time.
"We'll have to build a little room for Mack in our loveshack, I guess. Less we can get someone else to adopt her. Maybe she can go stay with her favorite ginger hooker," the blonde went on, laughing and shaking her head. "Her and that kid.. jeez, I don't get it." |
