Sam listened carefully as Tatum explained. "Damn, kinda sounds like fourth grade all over again when one kid pulls the other kid's hair but it's not okay for anyone else to do it," he smiled. "Do you think... do you think she likes you er something?" he asked.
At the mention of Colin, he looked down at her carefully. "You're on a break with Colin?" he asked, trying to sound as neutral as possible. "What happened?" he went on gently. He didn't feel so bad about the amount of flirting that had been going on the past few weeks now that he knew she was on a break but he had to wonder why she hadn't told him. It made sense in a way though, it was kind of a tough subject to bring up.
"That's exactly what it's l-like," Tatum agreed quickly, nodding. He had really hit the nail on the head with that one. Over-grown fourth graders was the perfect description for Mack and Hunter both, and Tatum was sick of being the girl getting her hair pulled by them. When Sam asked if Mack liked her, she blushed a little again and shook her head.
"M-Maybe? I guess? I mean, she's.. gay or whatever even if I'm.. not. So maybe?" she managed lamely. She had a feeling that once again, he was eerily correct. She had met Mack the first time, after all, when Sera had tried to set them on a date. Which neither really happened nor went well. But Mack had been sticking around ever since. Being asked about Colin made her tense up a little. She had vaguely told Eden what the situation had been, but she hadn't really told anyone the whole story. Even when Madeline, and Sera, had pried for details earlier she had left them out. She thought about lying, but there was already enough lying going on. "I-It's uhm, kind of a long story," she began, trailing off a bit and staring at something interested on his blanket instead. "Okay so like.. when I went h-home in the summer, I was in time for uhm, like his prom? And I guess muggles r-really like proms, and his mom took a bunch of pictures, and it w-was all chill and stuff but uhm," she tried to explain, knowing she was avoiding the point. It was sort of embarrassing at nearly twenty. "A-Apparently though, I guess you're uhm, supposed to sleep with your.. b-boyfriend. On his uhm, prom. And it doesn't.. always go over well if you don't? After p-promising?" In Colin's defense, it hadn't been the first time she had turned him down. Far from it, in fact. Chewing her lip, she shrugged. "Whatever though, we're like.. we text. Or whatever."
He nodded. "Kinda sounds it," he said. "I used to have such a crush on this girl in our first year," he laughed. "I can't even remember her name now, but I used to pull her hair and run away giggling until one day she shoved me against a wall and hollered at me, asking me why I did it until I finally fessed up," he laughed.
"Oh," he said quietly. "Wow... that's kinda douchey," he bit the inside of his cheek. "I mean... to like... go on a break with someone over that. Sorry but that's just... a terrible excuse." "It's gotta be right for, ya know, both people not just one. Especially if... ya know, ya aint never done it before," he mumbled the last bit out quickly, not wanting to make her feel any more awkward about it. They had been friends for a long time and even so, it was still an awkward subject to talk about while zombies were getting their heads hacked off in the background.
Tatum smiled a little. "You told her? Just like that?" she asked. Giving him a little nudge, she shifted around to get comfy again, ending up with her head rested against a mix of his shoulder and chest. "You're so easy," she joked. Her eyes watched the screen intently, but snapped away when he mentioned Colin again, her shoulders rising and falling uselessly.
"I g-guess, I mean-- it was kinda my fault. Like, actually.. like, dudes want to, uhm, do that stuff, you know? And I knew that and.. I said I would but then like, you know.. being Catholic and all," she tried to explain. It was true, but it was also her favorite excuse. It usually worked every time. Being Catholic certainly didn't stop the thoughts she had had about girls in the past though. But with boys.. there was just nothing. She could snuggle them for hours, kiss them even, but when it came time for that.. the interest just never happened. If anything, she felt more of a slight repulsion. Penises were so weird. "He's like.. uhm, you know, if he wants to have a girlfriend who like, d-does stuff, that's his business? I guess? Like I'm not gunna just.. do it or whatever," she went on, her cheeks getting redder by the second. Especially when Sam spoke again, hitting the nail on the head. That was a big part of it. In fact, she was fairly certain she was going to die a virgin at this rate. "He still s-sends me dirty texts though," she finally said after a few moments of awkward silence in which they just lay snuggled together. She cracked a little smile, hoping to break some of the tension. "When he's b-baked, so like all the time.."
"Yeah, jus' like that," he grinned, only shrugging when she told him he was easy. "I know. I'm just... I figure aint no use in playin' games er anything like that," he kept his eyes trained on the tv but his thumb began making little circles around her elbow.
"Aint your fault he's not cool enough to wait," he said shortly. "I mean... you're a cool chick Tate and if bein' with someone like that means no sex then... yeah... I think it'd be worth it," he said quietly. "Ya gotta do what's right for you. I'm glad ya stuck to your guns." When she mentioned dirty texts Sam had to fight laughing, holding it in as best as he could until she mentioned that he sent them when he was baked. He laughed loudly and shook his head. "Well that's just classy as fuck," he grinned. "How can you resist sexting Tat? You must have nerves of steel," he teased.
"My guns are all I got," Tatum replied quietly, managing a weak smile. She was glad that she was able to get him laughing and she laughed a little herself, head ducking down against his chest again.
"He has his m-moments," she weakly defended him. It was sort of habit now. She had spent so long arguing with people that he even existed. She grinned back at Sam, sticking her tongue out. "Who said I resist?"
"It's all anyone's got really," he shrugged. "But hey, who am I? Just some guy right?" he grinned. "I don't know the kid, got no right to judge."
He flushed a bit and laughed. "Well dang!" he teased, tickling at her side a bit. "He must be a total babe," he joked.
"Just some guy," Tatum agreed quietly, a weak grin of her own following. That about summed it up nicely, and she supposed that was part of why she didn't feel that upset about the whole thing. She had liked Colin, he was fun to hang out with, but he was just some guy in the end. It was usually how her boyfriends went.
Squirming a bit as he began to tickle her, the redhead squinted her eyes closed. "Oh he's nothin'!" she joked back, doing her best Southern emphasis on the last word as she laughed. "I'm just k-kidding! You know I'm not like.. well, it's like.. phones are just whatever. It's not the s-same!"
Sam couldn't help but laugh at her attempt at a Southern accent. "Well aint you just the dangdest thing?" he teased, giving her nose a little tweak.
More seriously he went on. "I know you aint like that though, no need to fuss over it," he smiled. "Jus' be careful about any of that stuff gettin' out, you never know with the freaks round here," he knew he was sounding like his dad but he genuinely worried.
Tatum laughed a little, but nodding her head in agreement. "You sound l-like my mom when she tells us not to put p-pictures on Facebook," she joked quietly, leaning in and brushing her nose briefly against his after he had tweaked hers. "You never know who's out there!"
Taking on a bit of a serious expression of her own then, a sort of melancholy smile, she shrugged. "I'm like.. c-careful, we're just.. I dunno, I guess we'll get back together, maybe.. I'd rather do it on a phone than like, do it do it with him," she explained, trailing off. "T-This is the most I've like, e-ever talked about sex," she admitted softly after a few moments of silence, laughing a little and with still flushed cheeks. "Then again I-I'm also probably uhm, the only kid in university still clutching onto their v-card.." |
