In Indonesia
Captain Marvel had arrived at Mount Merapi shortly after the lava began to flow.   He knew there were several villages nearby, as well as rescue workers, American Red Cross...thousands of lives.

He had managed to slow the lava flow by tossing massive boulders down the hole, but at this point he had to help with evacuations...there was no way he could stem the flow of lava *and* the loss of life by himself, even with the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas and the speed of Mercury guiding him.

Superman arced eastward, descending through the stratosphere toward the Indonesian disaster zone. Clark kept himself abreast of all potential disasters, but he had hoped the minor earthquakes experienced throughout Indonesia had been benign. Apparently they had been precursors to a full scale eruption.

Superman saw the familiar form of Captain Marvel streaking across the base of the mountain. He was immediately assured that the civilians would be safe, and Superman focused on the mountainside below. The eruption's already begun, I need to give Marvel some breathing room His gaze pierced the stone, x-ray vision allowing him to see the crimson tendrils of magma tubes far beneath the earth.

Superman scanned the barren Northern face of the mountain- opposite of aid camps and developed areas. Ensured that there were no people along the steep face, he closed in, and unleashed his heat vision. He blasted a huge swathe into the rock, causing a geyser to spurt out across the mountainside- like blood from a wound.

For the moment Superman had relieved the pressure on the Southern face, by allowing it to spill out onto the North. He had bought them time, but how much he was unsure of. Measures such as these could have an effect, but they were battling pressures and forces that had been building for millions of years- there was only so much that could be done.

Superman tore across the mountainside, rounding it's circumference until he came back into view of the clutch of villages and aid camps. Superman was glad to see that he Captain Marvel had already made huge strides in moving most of civilians. He came to land at the central command center, where dozens of aid workers, soldiers, engineers and paramedics were gathered, planning their next move. Superman looked around, searching for his collegue...

Marvel had seen the geyser burst, and the streak of blue and read, and already, he was breathing huge sighs of relief.

Because the *MAN* had arrived.

Solomon spoke to Marvel...in hushed whispers, as he usually does...and immediately Marvel flew to where the geyser was. Superman's heat vision had started the process, but it was a crack in the dyke, where the dam needed to shatter.

He flew to the spot...and shouted.

***SHAZAM!!!***

Marvel flew out of the way of the lightning...physical manifestation of the power of Zeus...as it struck the North face. The geyser exploded, and water flowed down the barren mountainside, rolling like a river. It steamed as it flowed...but Marvel could already see the slowing of the lava flow, no longer raging as hard. And for a brief moment, he could breathe easy. There were injuries, to be sure, but the loss of life was most assuredly stemmed.

He flew to where Superman stood, at command center. "Thanks for the help, sir." Marvel said, his demeanor more 15 year old boy than World's Mightiest Mortal.

"I feel like it was hardly necessary, with you handling things" Superman said. He always liked the way Captain Marvel called him "sir". Not that Clark felt he somehow deserved it, but because the title said much more about Marvel than it did about Superman. Of all his abilities, its the Humility of Billy Batson that truly sets him apart Clark thought. "I wanted to thank you for stepping up like you did, while I was gone" Superman said.

Prior to his 3 month pilgrimage to the ruins of Krypton, Superman had spoken to a select few who he trusted to look after various responsibilities. He had spoken to Billy last- and his had been the most important role. "In the event of some Crisis, I have absolute faith that Diana and Batman, and the rest of the community will mobilize without me. But occasionally there are threat of a type that make teams and strategies irrelevant. Like Doomsday, for instance. At a time like that, its going to fall on one man to face down that kind of threat. While I'm gone, that responsibility will fall to you alone. Clark had never doubted for a second that Marvel would be able to rise to any threat, in the same way Superman had risen to so many.

"Its nice to see someone remembering their priorities" he said, his mind returning to his recent troubles with Batman and the League.

Oh boy

"It was an honor." Marvel said simply, before looking around. "With the immediate threat of the volcano taken care of, and the civilians evacuated to the emergency camps, I think the Red Cross can spare us for a few minutes, if we can talk privately for a moment."

With a nod, Marvel then began a flight path to the top of a nearby ridge, away from the civilians, with a view of the volcano over the horizon. He touched down, and waited for Superman to say the same.

"I wanted to get out of earshot, in case you wanted to talk about things that were more of a private nature." He looked at Superman plainly. "Because even if I didn't have the wisdom of Solomon at the moment, I can tell something is bothering you. I'm willing to listen if you need an ear."

Superman followed Marvel's lead, flying after him and landing nearby. He was slightly surprised by Marvel's offer, and was initially reluctant to concede. "I'm just having a little trouble re-adjusting to being home..." he said, carefully.

He had inherited the stoic silence of his Jonathan Kent, when it came to his own doubts. Jonathan closely guarded his fears and worries, believing they were his burdens to bear- and that he should only show his wife and son love and affection.

Clark had seen the toll it had taken on his father, but he also appreciated why Jonathan did what he did. And while both Clark was in touch with their feelings, and did a better job of communicating them to friends and family alike- Clark had silently sworn he would emulate his father, when it came to his own doubts and fears.

Even now, Captain Marvel's face was creased with innocent concern. "We re-formed the Justice League recently, but some of the tensions that made us break up were lingering" he said. "Its nothing more than growing pains, though. And I always feel better when I'm out doing good, with heroes of your caliber" he said, putting a reassuring hand on Captain Marvel's shoulder.

Marvel looked at his friend. A small whisper itched at the back of his head. "What tensions?" Marvel asked, the innocence of Billy mixing with the wisdom of Solomon at that moment. Superman could tell that he honestly didn't know.

Clark considered for a few moments, before finally answering. "It seems like we were always running from one crisis to another, just barely saving the world one week, then having to save it again the next. In that kind of rush, its easy to forget that saving the world, stopping the badguy- that doesn't mean the threat is over. And we're stretched so thin, you can't just call a meeting every time there's a hard decision to be made. Sometimes you have to make it yourself."

"And we haven't all agreed on how these decisions have been made. Some of us have made some truly bad calls, but for the right reasons... and that made things tense. So that's why the League disbanded for a while. And thats why we're going to have to keep pushing through, and try our best not to repeat our mistakes."

He said, looking back to Captain Marvel. "But enough about that, how how's life been treating you?"

"I've been busy, around Fawcett City, of course." Marvel said. "I miss the Justice Society, but it's...something I need to not be around for now. The situation with Courtney, mainly."

"I can't imagine the decisions you guys made being that damaging that it would disband the league, though. I mean, you, Batman, Diana...you're heroes." Marvel said simply.

"We are. But heroes are just people in the end" he said. Clark always found Captain Marvel's presence to have a calming effect. He managed to see the world with both wisdom and simplicity, and the two were a powerful combination. "How would you feel about joining the League- on the primary team, I mean?" Most heroes were "members" of the League, either as reservists or active members the League could allocate to crisis around the world- but this was the upper echelon, Superman was talking about. "We could use a perspective like yours...and an arm" he said playfully, indicating Marvel's bulging biceps.

"You've already got arms, sir." Captain Marvel said, wideyed. He had been in the League previously...back in the days where Guy Gardner and Doctor Fate were also members. But this was different.

Superman was giving him the engraved invitation.

And a small voice told Billy what he wanted to hear.

"It would be an honor. I...just need to be able to work it around my schoolwork." He felt kind of dumb even saying it.

"Of course." And THAT is why we need him Superman thought. He looked up and around, increasing his awareness of the region around him via his senses. "Stop by the Hall of Justice or the Watchtower anytime and we can get you your communicator. I need to continue my patrol." He held out a hand. "I'm glad we ran into each other, Billy."
